California is where the money is at and nurse-patient ratio is also awesome. I worked for 20 years straight as LVN & then RN , saved and invested and then retired at 38 debt-free with healthy retirement accounts and 3 monthly income streams. Life is good. All it takes is hard work, and saving/investing. Do not buy things you do not really need.

This is easy guys, for the same amount of work, I get over 100% advantage in after tax income (620k vs 270k) and an 11% disadvantage in total estimated tax burden (44% vs 33%) for living and working in CA instead of TX. Thanks for the video idea and always commenting on my videos 👍. You are so right about having the information to make these informed financial decisions-even if you're not working 365 days of the year. The nurse who's paycheck I revealed works an average of 48 hours per week (she rarely works runs over 30 days long) and already reached 199k for the year. She's also a single mother with children who are older and live in her household. She has a networth of over $600k. She also has an $800k home that's worth over $1 million dollars. And, she bought a Tesla Model X last year and paid for it in cash!

First, I recommend you get at least 6 months to 1 year if experience in a hospital setting. But, in the mean time go to Facebook and search for The Gypsy Nurse Network and follow them. There is a ton of valuable information in there. Also, go to their website and look for this blog post: "19 Tips for Traveling Nurses", it will be you a lot of time and money. And, lastly, being a travel nurse is a great way to get your foot in the door of a hospital you want to work for the rest of your life in. For example, Kaiser is known for hiring travelers after working two contracts in their organization.

Had to rewatch this one after your latest to get the full understanding! This is like a pot of gold 😂 I'm wondering though, have you encountered any nurses with just their ADN at Kaiser Permanente? I'll be done with my BSN by July or so, but I want to apply ASAP, so I'm just wondering if I even stand a chance landings job there before I have my BSN? I have about 2.5 years of med-surg experience if that helps. Thanks!
@NursesToRiches
@NursesToRiches 2 жыл бұрын
Girlllll, apply now! I work with so many ADN nurses (although many of them are now in school getting their BSN) and there is no difference in pay for having the higher degree. The only benefit of getting your BSN is that many hospitals across the country are more requiring their nurses to be BSN-educated, and Kaiser will be one of those hospitals soon enough.

Hi Jason!! Your videos are amazing and I REALLY appreciate your content. I was wondering if overtime opportunities are still the same now as when you made this video over a year ago? Also, do you have the ability to float to other hospitals that have staffing shortages to contribute to run pay?
@NursesToRiches
@NursesToRiches Жыл бұрын
Hi Jasmine, the overtime is cyclical and right there hasn't been too much overtime in the last month or so but 70% to 80% of the year there is so much overtime you could literally work every single day if you wanted. There is opportunity to pick up shifts in sister hospitals but it's extremely rare. However, if you are an ICU, Tele, or medsurg nurse, you can always pick up shifts in other medsurg or tele units.

Unfortunately, there are no Kaiser hospitals in Arizona. But there are Kaiser hospitals in California, Oregon, Washington, Hawaii, Maryland, Georgia, Virginia, and Colorado. However, the highest-paying Kaiser hospitals belong to Northern California's CNA (California Nurses Association). LA has a Kaiser hospital that belongs to CNA but they don't pay as high as the ones in Northern California.

Excellent and through video! It seems like many Kaiser’s have a lot of hours and shifts up for grabs so people work a lot of overtime. My question is: Is this a seasonal thing due to COVID, chronic understaffing? How is so much overtime available for people? In your experience are there always hours available if one wants to work more?
@NursesToRiches
@NursesToRiches 3 жыл бұрын
It's cyclical, but for the most part, there is always overtime available. The only time we didn't have OT available was when the restrictions were first put in place last year and everyone was scared to come to the hospital. I've been working there 3 years and there has been plenty of overtime available every day up until that month. Also, the reason for so much overtime is because our ED, like most EDs in the country have quick turnover rates, and in California, hospitals are not allowed to break ratio laws.

Thanks for the hard working! Those videos help a lot! In Australia, we only reward nurses up to year 10, and experience nurses are not preferred because hospital will pay the same role for more money. But we have salary package of 9000 each hospital for saving the tax. Btw, Is it difficult to find a per-diem job in Bay Area for an experience nurse? Also, we have 1:4ratio in Vic, what about in Kaiser? And how’s the usual shift hours? We have almost all of the 8hrs shift 07:00-15:30 13:00-21:30 and 21:00-07:00, what about California, I could see there’re lots of choices in flexible hours but, what are the common shift hours like? Thanks 😊
@NursesToRiches
@NursesToRiches 2 жыл бұрын
If you transfer from Australia to a Kaiser hospital, once they review your experience, if it is approved, you will receive up to 10 years of credit for your experience. But, for every 2 years of experience, Kaiser will treat it as one year of service. So with 10 years of experience you would come in as a nurse in step 5 of the wage schedule. California has the largest shortage of nurses compared to every other state in the country, so an experienced nurse will have a much easier time finding work here than a new grad. We also have ratio laws in California (it's the only state in the country with laws regarding safe staffing). ICU is max 1:2. ED varies, if you have a critical patient it's 1:1 until the patient is stable, then it becomes 1:2. In the ED, also, if you have Tele and medsurg patients, then it's 1:4, and if you have a stepdown patient (less critical than an ICU patient), your ratio is 1:3. If you are a telemetry floor nurse, your ratios are 1:4. When it comes to shifts, it varies by department. In our ED we have 0645-1515 0945-1815 1045-2315 1445-2315 1445-0315 1745-0215 1845-2315 1845-0715 2245-0715 and 2245-1115.

Kaiser has been cutting down on overtime and even scheduling the per diem employees for the last 4-5 months now. However, this happens every year but this is the longest dry spell since I've been there. On any other occasion, new grads could get as much overtime as seasoned nurses but run pay to this extent is more likely to happen in the ER than any other unit.

If I have a step down patient, I'm maxed at 3 patients. Outside of the ED, medsurg floors are 5:1. Tele is 4:1. Step down is 3:1. ICU 2:1 unless one of your patients is very ill, then it's 1:1.

Yes because Kaiser (in Northern California) is the only hospital system that gives nurses "run pay"

What about the taxes? Living expenses-I think after taxes their pay would be that of an RN in MT lol
@NursesToRiches
@NursesToRiches 3 жыл бұрын
Not at all. Not even close. The cost of living here is 50%+ less than NYC and 140%+ less than San Francisco. We used to make 12k/mo after taxes in NYC and now we make 17.5k/mo here. We spend the same amount here and have nearly 13k left over every month after our bills are paid.

Can a nurse work all those hours because that would be unstable
@NursesToRiches
@NursesToRiches 3 жыл бұрын
Unstable, yes. But so far 3 nurses I work with have gone over 365 days per year for a couple of years. However, the thing I see more often is what I revealed in the paycheck. That coworker doesn't work every day of the year and she has reached 199k already. She is a 12-hour shift employee and probably works and average of 48 hours per week. This is one of the longest runs she's done (30+days) since working here. The majority of my coworkers do runs for less than 50 days, so they could either invest their money, take a trip somewhere, or pay off their debts. In 50 days they manage to earn an average of $32k.

@NursesToRiches
@NursesToRiches 2 жыл бұрын
Yep, taxes are high but at the end of the day, we are still bringing home more money than any nurse in any other city in the US. I've made videos comparing the salaries of the highest-paying cities in the US (according to the Bureau of Labor and Statistics) and adjusted those salaries for the cost of living. Sacramento is one of the best, if not the best, city to work in as a nurse.

I have videos on my channel that outline the steps you should take when moving from another state to California as a nurse. I also have a video where I show my step-by-step process of applying to jobs at Kaiser.
