@@unpotatoedsalmon Not really. Emulation is usually bottlenecked by CPU power, while rendering takes only about 15-20% of the emulation tasks. This thing is the opposite of emulation boxes (decent CPU, integrated GPU as afterthought) - a lot of GPU power, not much of CPU.

This looks very cool but I'm a bit cautions about NVIDIA hardware that is not graphic cards since i have the feeling they are one of those companies that don't bother with long term support for their products. I've noticed that with certain products I've owned as soon as a new one comes out they stop caring about the previous versions (e.g. shield tablet) or features they push a lot and suddenly they just ignore (physx, 3D Vision).

Chris, you need to use a 4A 5V supply on the barrel jack. You're running in 5W mode that limits the system speed. This is stated in the manual. CPU max clock 900Mhtz, and GPU 600Mhtz. Vs in 10W mode of 1.4Ghtz and gpu 920Mhtz
@ExplainingComputers5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for this, but as I've noted below, it is not stated in the manual. :) Indeed, I've just re-read the PDF user guide (and searched it) and there is no mention of a low power mode, 5W mode, or any contraint on GPU performance if using a sufficient micro USB adapter. Rather, the advice there is "if the developer kit’s total load is expected to exceed 2A, e.g., due to peripherals attached to the carrier board, connect the J48 Power Select Header pins to disable power supply via Micro-USB and enable 5V⎓4A via the J25 power jack".

But I will try powering via the barrel jack! :)

@RichardEricCollins5 жыл бұрын
My apologies Chris, it looks like I got confused with the usage of the nvpmodel command. By default the system will run in 10W mode but if you're having issues with it running from USB power then 'sudo nvpmodel -m1' can be used to place the system in 5W mode with the reduction of clock speeds. I had incorrectly assumed that the system switched to 5W when running of USB power as a lot of people were saying it was necessary to do so to run from USB power. As your power supply is a 3W one then you got lucky. :) 'sudo nvpmodel -q' will state what mode you're in. Mine says "NV Power Mode: MAXN".

Very interesting little board. Looks like it would be fun to play around with. But as a hardware guy, some things caught my eye. Yes, but this is still a really decent general purpose SBC (especially with that OpenGL capable GPU) and NVidia would sell way more of these boards if they dropped this "AI only" moniker. Put this board in a case, call it a Shield TV Lite and you have yourself a great HTPC or an emulation device. The only thing that they need for this to be the perfect SBC is to fix their software.
