Had fun creating a tunnel liner for the O gauge. Just did one at this point but will to the other the same way next time I have the modules apart. Found this to be very effective at making a realistic tunnel.

That looks awesome! Super realistic. Much much better than the original idea.

Very cool technique dear Bill, think this way of making a tunnel liner very well reflects the way a tunnel bore is hacked, whacked or bored, drilled or exploded. Way better than the uniform look of the shaper sheets!!

Bill, outstanding tunnel interior! From concept to production! 👍👍 I do not know if it was as easy to do as you made it look, but it, sure looks fantastic. 👍👍 I can not wait to see a train light coming out from that tunnel.

Hey Bill, Back in the mid-1950's I used the same Liner Plate tunneling system on my former "O" gauge layout. The long term problem I had was when running trains, or moving the layout, the tunnel walls would chip, crack, & collapse onto the track. While the ugly side is still accessible here is a trick I learned from the old Railroad Model Craftsman Magazine. Take an old ragged tee shirt from the junk drawer. Soak the shirt in in water. Carefully drape the damp shirt over the hidden tunnel walls. When wet the plaster will soften. But as it dries the shirt will strengthen and bond the plaster and anchor itself. And don't fret about trashing a build. I have had truck loads of good ideas gone bad over the past 70 years modeling. Jim in N.Y.

Thanks Jim! Yeah an old shirt would work well. I’m hoping the fibers in the sculptamold will keep things in good shape. I will find out soon as I plan to start taking the layout to shows in 2023

great idea, Bill. It looks like a real rock tunnel even before you stained it. I just may have to use this idea in N-scale. Thanks for sharing, David.

I mentioned to another responder is that I am lucky that I don't have to model tunnels on my line. The reason is there are no RR tunnels or road tunnels in Kansas despite having 1000 ft. above sea level hills all over the place. Mostly I will be modeling cuts and fills and relatively high trestles. Planned into the current layout are two cuts and a small culvert at the fill on one side of one of the cuts. From what I see here the rockwork on my road will be carved mostly horizontally aligned and in the colors of sandstone, shale, limestone and other sedimentary formations, oh and brown coal seams.

There is some neat geology in Kansas even if it’s horizontal. That will give you many opportunities to color the rock in many shades

Great job! This is a little like sitting down in the middle of a movie and asking what happened at the beginning but what flex track/switches do you use?
@modelrailroadadventureswit6347
@modelrailroadadventureswit6347 Жыл бұрын
For the O standard I use atlas sectional track and switches and the same flex track from Atlas as well

I'm only 3 minutes into your video... but I don't think you are leaving enough clearance on the outside of the curve. To get my BigBoy and 4-12-2 to clear scenery and walls etc, on my Atlas O-72 curves, I have to leave at least the full width of the track (width of the sleepers about 70mm) to allow enough room for the nose of the BigBoy and the cab roof of the 4-12-2 to not hit anything. Just a thought. Great video on "How To". Pete

I think the idea is to adapt his technique to your layout for your situation. I am lucky I only am modeling cuts as Kansas doesn't have tunnels on any rail lines here.

Very true. If I was planning on running anything bigger than shag I have I would definitely expand things more. As it is all my equipment runs the layout well

This looks great! Neat idea. I have one question. Why do all of the good modelers on youtube have beards. Is there a requirement I missed? HaHa.
@TheJpec361
@TheJpec361 Жыл бұрын
Because the friction caused from massaging one's beards while in contemplation produces good ideas...😆

I think we all have beards because we haven’t figured out a way to use beard cut offs for scenery so far 😂
