Sending more brutal honesty your way ... Yay! 1) Mahe looks so young! like she is in her 20's NO can guess she is a mother many times over. 2) Moloka'i is INTENSE, still. Mainly locals and natives and not all that much to do, either. I mean, I know one woman who lives here and was raised there, and she even admitted that she was taught to "hate da Haoles"! Eddie Vedder has one home over there, and frankly ... I do not know how he manages. Gimme Waikiki any ole day. I love its central location, and Los Angeles by the beach good vibes. 3) Maui burns sugar cane, often which can turn the air all pilau. 4) Hawai'i anywhere has lovely sea life and sea creatures. Even those men in grey suit, da sharks, are our brothers and sisters. 5) Mahe's arm sleeves are something else. Tats for daze. Good job! Show off your island pride, Grrrrl! 6) For me mana means SPIRIT, too. Power for sure, energy heck yeah, but also SPIRIT. People who have mana are deluxe kine, who are not himakamaka about it either. They do not know even know how blessed that are. Starts off by having "Aloha", too. 7) OMG Pā'ia is trippy! One haole told me it is a "dirty little hippie town on Maui." She lived on Maui for years and even loved going there to get "health" (aka rabbit!) food. Yeesh! 8) The late Shep Gordon the great record producer and band manager, lived on Maui and said of it: The scenery is never like wallpaper to me. True dat. He threw LEGENDARY parties at his huge pad, right on the beach and EVERYONE CAME. Why? Because everyone was invited, that's why! 9) Derek, I love your expression, "Your vibe attracts a tribe." Yep! 10) Yes, you are right that tourism has not yet found its way to Oahu's west side / which in some ways is like the wild, wild West.

Also, about Maui totally agree about looking out for each other & the village vibes… We were just visiting and I witnessed a local looking out for some tourists that were having a hard time getting back onto shore because the waves were too rough in Paia… I witnessed a local about to lifeguard this kid in just being protective & it felt very safe!! All was well in the end but woah was really good feeling -aloha ❤

Lived on Maui for years then moved back here to Oahu due to rising costs on Maui. Everything said in this video is very accurate. Fresh meat from the mainland gets the bottom tier jobs but you prove yourself and quickly work your way up. I remember my first car on Maui was a $1400 Maui cruiser with running AC. Within a year I had worked up to a much better used car and by 3 years was in a new car. Thankfully the Islands have a way of spitting out new comers that try to bring their mainland attitude here. That's a no go. Great video!🎉❤🌺🌴

Living on the big island I love it as I lived in Los Angeles so long I don’t miss the big city. Just came back from oahu and it cemented my feelings for living in a nature filled quiet place and visiting Oahu then the other way around. I’m not very social so it works for me. That’s what I love about the state as a whole there’s a place for everyone but I’m interested in Maui as they say it’s a miniature version of big island. Planning on visiting Maui next summer

I love love Kahe! She is so awesome! Keep her on your videos. But Kahe, there IS escaping it on O’ahu. I “temporarily” live in PCP until Derek finds me a cheap (haha) condo in Waialua for me and my pup and then I retire to Kaua’i where my ohana is. I stay on peninsula and work on Schofield and grocery shop in laid back Foodland Waipio and the beaches I go to on North Shore I am almost only one there. Yesterday I hung out with one big honu who was yawning on the beach. I have found my introvert places here and love it.

Lived on Oahu from 1986-1990 (Waikiki ), which I loved. I was in my twenties so it was great! Got married in 1990 and was expecting (hapai) when we moved to Maui for hubbies job. I love Maui because it’s much slower pace. First lived in Wailuku but quickly moved to Kihei. My daughter lives in Pukalani …beautiful views. Waikiki has changed sooo much. I don’t recognize it! Maui has changed too, but not as drastic! Thanks for da videos🌺

I spend lots of time in Kailua last week on my visit to Oahu. It was my favorite part of the island. So if Maui is a giant version of Kailua , then I'm definitely going to visit Maui very soon on my next trip.

Excellent video! Still don’t know which island is right for me but I’m 5 years out anyway. Would probably get an apartment for a year to be sure. Mahe gives a lot of good info I wouldn’t even think to ask about. She needs her own channel

This is so fascinating, so insightful & real thank you so much adore you guys. Was looking up traditional Hawaiian dance, obsessed with halaus now & climbing up coconut trees lol and somehow the algorithm brought me here. Didn't even know I wanted to move to the islands lol but needed all these facts about how it really is- definitely lots of pros and cons to consider. Great info! I was born and raised on Oahu, moved to mainland, now living in TN. We were in Maui pre Covid, for a week, and Oahu for a week, we love both! If we ever hit the lottery, we will move back! 😅

Love the show. The WORST TSA experience I ever had was on Maui. You could tell they needed more staff. Always wanted to retire in Hawaii. This video was SO informative. We already have a Realtor that we’re very blessed to have. Otherwise: we’d definitely give you a call. Aloha from a COLD Pacific NW!!

You guys put so much thought into this-thanks so much. We are struggling between choosing Oahu as my wife is from 🇯🇵 and she loves the connection, while I prefer Maui due to its beauty. Either way $$$$ is a huge obstacle. Love from 🇨🇦

That part of Kahekili Rd in Maui at Kahakuloa Beach is prob the scariest (and perhaps most exciting) thing to do in all of Hawaii. Mahe tries to explain it, but it is impossible to explain how steep and narrow that little part of Maui is as the road is carved on the side of a steep cliff and it is the only access to the small village down there, and also the only way to get across to the other side of Maui. The drive itself is not so bad - just keep your eyes on the road - but the actual trauma exists in not knowing if another car is approaching you…if there is, then the scary proposition of squeezing through two cars on a rail-less dirt cliff road is the reality. I actually love that part of Maui just north of Kapalua…there are amazing snorkel spots and hiking areas in that region. I drive around there every time I visit Maui…it is beautiful country there.

Going home to Lahaina from Kahului one night, I sat in traffic for 9 hours because of a small brush fire. Car accidents can cause looong delays too. Crazy, but I love Maui.

Great vid guys. I grew up on my mom’s island of Okinawa till I was 6, then moved to the mainland(SoCal). I have to admit, My wife and I do like Maui better than Oahu but, we’ve never lived on either island. We have been to both islands several times and recently looked at houses on Maui. The main reasons why we like Maui better are less traffic, less crime, less drugs and less people. I know all the islands are great, but Maui has just enough variety for us to keep us happy, I think🤔. It’s either Maui or Okinawa. Love you guys, keep up the good work.

Went to Maui in December and drove the back way to Hana on the Pillani Highway and the next day drove the entire north Kahekili Highway too all the way to Kahului. Sketchy, but easily the best two day road trip of my life. Epic views, solitude, you just have to go slow and honk before the corners. Stop at Lorraine’s for banana bread in Kahakuloa.

Love all the vids! I have a daughter at BYUH and have been to Oahu several times this year. Bad traffic in town is like bad commuter traffic in small cities on the mainland (like KC where I am), nothing like NYC, DC, LA, SF, etc. 20-30 minutes and you're through the bad spots, right? (I'm up on the north shore a lot, and the Kam hwy there has its own issues, but hey, you're in Hawaii, so nothing to complain about!)

I’m in negotiations with a healthcare position on Maui and will be coming with my children from Southern California. I’ve only been to Kauai. I’m concerned we won’t find a place to rent due to the recent fires and prices increasing. But I’m eager to get there and help with the healthcare crisis as far as staffing issues. Any connections to an employee at Kaiser Maui that I can talk to?

I'll move from Texas to Oahu because of roads and infrastructure. Maui or the big island lack infrastructure in the way of roads. I'm an avid motorcyclist and I have a large collection of motorcycles 107 and counting. I also have 64 cars to date and counting. I'm having difficulty finding beach front properties with room to build two 40,000 foot buildings to house my collections. And no ferrying between the islands it would be redundant to buy properties on the big island or Maui for that matter. I'm looking for a group of beach front properties so if need be I can bull doze a multi million dollar property to build my car and motorcycle galleries. So I'm in a quandra.

Most don't want to give up the amenities and lifestyle available on more populated islands like O'ahu and Maui. Molokai is great for a certain type of person, maybe someone seeking a more off-the-grid kind of life.

Maui has too many haoles, especially from CA - sad. land developers have carved out their piece of the pie on Maui. I’m told that if you want to avoid haoles (foreigners) stay far away from Oahu-Maui. As someone w/ some Hawaiian & Chamorro blood I get a hybrid perspective of the colonization from both the east & west.
