i live in a suburb just outside of oakland but i still have a lot of love for oakland, people are very ignorant towards the struggles that people face when growing up in areas where the government fucks people over. i was lucky enough to grow up in the suburbs but i’ve seen the worst of the worst and that doesn’t mean the people are bad. you just have to know how to move and keep your head on a swivel. still love the bay

My dad started working for the City of Oakland Parks Department in the early 1960s. He trimmed most of the Oakland trees among other things. He always said that Oakland was one of the most beautiful cities. The people of Oakland saved his life. The strap that supported him when he climbed trees broke and he fell to the ground the old chainsaws didn't shut off fell on his leg and hit an artery. Near the very so called bad neighborhood people always talk about. The neighbors and passer-bys all stopped to help my father until help could arrive. They tied his leg with a belt near the artery calmed him and prayed for him. He never forgot that. The scar was massive but he lived. The local newspaper put it in the paper. Oakland will always be special to me

That's worst area in Oakland. Oakland has high crime and poverty but also wealth in the hills and north Oakland. I grew up in a transitional neighborhood of North Oakland (Temescal) in the 80's when it was cheap. We paid around $300 for a large two bedroom in a 4 Plex.

I literally grew up on 98 A street. 4:00 I love Oakland, our culture like no other. Poverty in every city but at the end of the day its a mindset. Growing through the struggle is a gift, you develop certain character that gives you an edge in this game of life.

As a Bay Area local and someone who lives in Oakland I agree that Oakland has really bad areas but you have to show the good areas too, Oakland Zoo, Montclair, The Cathedral Building, Oakland City Hall, Chabot Space and Science Center, Shepherds Canyon Park, Lake Merritt, Reinhardt Redwood Regional Park, and other places. Oakland may not be the best city, but it’s my city. Another thing I would like to point out is that other big cities like San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York also have areas like this. Every city has its ups and downs. I’m not saying that this video is wrong, there are many places like this in Oakland, but I just wanted to point out some of the highlights of the city.

Amazing hiking trails, ferryboats, gondolas trams at the zoo, archery range, symphony, can't be enjoyed from inside a locked car. Didn't interact with any Oaklanders, so no contact with the very diverse community. Could have had Eritrean, Ethiopian, Korean, Japanese, Mandarin, Szechuan, Mongolian, Mexican, Guatemalan, Nicaraguan, Vietnamese, Soul Food, Afghan, Cambodian, Burmese, Chicken and Waffles, Macaroni and Beers, Middle Eastern (Kosher, Halal, Iraqi, Persian and more), Thai, French, Spanish, Italian, Brazilian (and more) types of food, breweries, pubs, clubs and cafes, vibrant LGBTQ, artist, activist, and music communities. Could have found any religious, agnostic, or atheist community. The hometown of the Vice President and of the Black Panthers. Strong Unions, motorcycle clubs, street racing and so much more. Oakland is not Sketchy it’s real life. Nothing in life is perfect nevertheless a city. I was born and raised in East oakland 28th and Foothill. My parents bought a house I Havenscourt in 2004. I left to college to San Jose State came back to my hood and bought a house on my parents block in Havenscourt. Oakland is beautiful including the struggle. I lived in different places in the country and I continue and prefer to come back to Oakland. Oakland has heart and character it’s not for the weak people. You learn street smart which eventually becomes a life skill. You learn to hustle and survive. You just a hater that lives in a upscale neighborhood. Don’t ever disrespect Oakland like. We will come for you. You disrespected the people that we are from here. As the spokesperson from Oakland don’t pass by come back the the hood.

I see a lot of missing housing in the landscape. That road can use some serious traffic calming. I see a lot of cars parked on the sidewalk and illegal dumping. I don’t miss the serious lack of housing supply in the Bay Area. The Bay Area cities seriously need to repeal exclusionist zoning laws and parking requirements. I see fools driving in the bus lane. I see a fool riding a bike in the pedestrian path. International Blvd looks more hood than anywhere in SE DC. That closed Walgreens needs to be torn down and be redeveloped into mixed income housing with ground floor retail. Billboards need to be illegal, there no billboards in the DC hoods. I see a lot of missing apartments and mixed income housing missing on International Ave. if new housing can be built in the neighborhood, peeps wouldn’t have to commute all the way from Antioch or Vallejo. Them prison fences are ugly. Sad to say, my house in DC is taller than most buildings in the East Bay.

Because city officials over the years took money out the city. When I grew up the city was a beautiful city. I was able to walk up and down the streets with no problem. Black owned business were thriving and money was coming in to support the black owned businesses. Now most off all the summer programs for the you are gone because of lack of funding. City officials took all money black own or minority own businesses, which meant they were forced to shut down. City of Oakland refused to clean the city that why you see all the trash. If you notice how north Oakland is all remodeled and clean compared to east Oakland. Gentrification is the reason. Mayor's that were into off either stole city funds for personal use or even used money to house the rich and build all those high rise buildings you see in on telegraph Ave. Do your research from the 1990's until now. High rent, no jobs and nothing for the youth to do. This is what happens to all inner cities like Oakland .

If you arent a standout tourist. You won't lose more then a couple bucks to some down on their luck panhandlers... It's funny how the media portrays things... Champion Smokehouse is still off the hook. In N Out wasn't a loss, they were just weak and in the way.. But the auto theft sucks for sure...
