My #1 Fall food plot for big bucks. No more brassica's on my farm. Update of 3 oat food plots and results. Draw deer from everywhere September through November and during the rut!
As requested I’m now doing onsite whitetail land management. I’d love to take a look at your property and help to take down your biggest buck!

Oats really are the best. Love clover and radish mixed in. Im in the deep south, so winter kill is usually not a problem.😊

I’ve heard a few guys that throw in radish with success. Oats are definitely hard to beat late fall. Good hunting this season👍

Here in Alabama I say oats is our biggest draw too. I will say though that preference seems to be cyclical throughout the season, but our season goes from October 15-February 10. January I seem to see a switch from oats as much. May be from frosts, I don't know. I observe them hitting a little brassica, mainly radish, a few clover, a few rye/oats/wheat and a lot of winter peas. I typically can't find a winter pea in the plots by end of season.

Thanks for your feedback from Alabama. Interesting you have similar results as Wisconsin. Good luck this season!

Glad I found this video. I did my first food plots last year. I did a brassica blend. Came up really well. Deer ate it but didnt hammer it like I thought they would, even when all the corn/beans were down. Im going to do brassicas again but wanted to try something new in an area that was a little more shady where they didnt grow too well last year, and was leaning towards either rye, winter wheat, or oats (Michigan). You have me pretty convinced to try oats. Do they grow well in shady areas? Thanks!!

Looking good Nate!! Could you overseed oats/rye/winter wheat into standing corn too? Corn is probably 3-6' high. Would doing so have any harmful impact on the soil for planting corn again next year? Live in MI.
@Natesbowhunting
@Natesbowhunting 11 ай бұрын
I personally have never tried over seeding into corn. I have however, heard of people doing it. Especially in patchy areas and if corn was broadcasted. I know oats grow well in the shade so it shouldn’t be a problem. I would do it before a good rain. Not sure on soil impact myself. Good luck and let me know how it turns out for you.👍

Overseeded a brassica plot with oats and cereal rye in northern MN big woods area yesterday. Will frost kill oats? Lean toward the rye up here for the cold tolerance as we could get frost in a couple weeks.

Frost does not kill oats. My oats were green right up until when I shot my buck November 24th last season. I have clip of them in that time frame in the video below with the snow. When do you plant your oats usually? In the spring? The fall? And do you ever mix them with clover or anything? I’m really interested in planting oats next year but need to know when to plant them
@Natesbowhunting

Here in Wisconsin I plant them the last week of August. You can get away with the 1st week of September as well. Good timing to keep them young and tender and not too tall and woody. Good luck!

Can u just broadcast oats among already growing grasses etc. before a good rain and germinate ?
@Natesbowhunting

I had pretty good success broadcasting them over my soybeans. This was before we got 2 inches of rain however. I think rain is key and I sprayed for weeds. I had good seed to soil contact. Good luck!

How small can a plot be and still be affective? If you over seed soy beans with oats during a normal year, will they simply shad out the oats.
@Natesbowhunting
@Natesbowhunting 11 ай бұрын
I have 3 oat plots anywhere from 1/8 acre up to 3/4 acres. The strip along the corn last season was only 15 yards wide by 70 yards long and was extremely effective. I agree on a normal year you would have to wait until Soybeans shed there leaves for that method to be effective.
