He is kind of doing it. I am from Oaxaca and let me explain why. 1.- Promotes airBnb. airBnb is the classical tool to gentrification in the city. The few laws allow them to change price up to 200% of the original rental price. Xochimilco and Jalatlaco used to be residencial areas in the city, now no one lives there. The prices of buying homes near the city center imposible to pay for Mexicans (even "rich" ones) because of interest of foreign immigrants. The houses are not owned by Oaxaca people, buy just a select number of super rich. And they not pay taxes because it is not regulated (hotels are). 2.- Promotes high end restaurants. Oaxaca food is know because it is popular, easy to find and local. Many high end restaurants have pop up in the city, diverging the income from small kitchens or family own to these "investments" for people outside of the city. Many high end restaurants are own by people who are not from oaxaca and even mexico. That income could help many families and create a more diverse food options. Now many are going out of business. By closing the small kitchen, they also close the cheap options for locals, eliminating the options to eat for locals and creating a exclusive "foreing prices" zone of restaurants. Locals don´t earn as much in the city center because it is so expensive to eat in the lunch time. 3.- Promotes gentrified zones. As i mentioned, xochimilco and jalatlaco have suffered from gentrification. they don´t have hotels there, so the only opción are rentals. 4.- I could go on... but it will get to long. hehe. It is very easy to stop gentrification by the choices we make. 1.-Respect the culture and people 2.-Understand the struggle (more than 50% of people from oaxaca are poor!, mexican poor!) 3. Choose wisely and pay were it counts. (if you only see tourist, you might be in the wrong place) 4. If you are going to home office work, remote work, apply for the work visa and pay taxes. It is very easy to do and the taxes are really low. It angers all mexicains how you "profit" from paying low prices and "saving" by living in Oaxaca illigaly.

However, the majority are not illegal. The government allows a 6 month tourist visa. Many just cross the border into US or Guatemala at 6 months, then come immediately back into Mexico and get another 6 month visa. All legal. It seems to be too easy to stay in Mexico long term, and this is something the government could fix. Although, I imagine they wont, as they see a financial benefit.

​@@GringoInterrupted It is quite easy, and you have no idea how many foreigners brag about how "clever" they are 🙄(really... way to many). The key parts it the "tourists" element, are you working here? or are you visiting? . If you are working you need a work visa. If you are visiting here you only need tourist visa. The government "trusts" you are saying the truth, but we know many lie. Don´t be like that, be better, be honest. It is quite easy to do and unexpensive. And it shows Mexicans you really care about our country.

Hmm, interesting. I usually look at both AirBnb and hotels to find the best deal, but often choose hotels. AirbBnB is usually cheaper. But, I’ll think about this next time. I never smoke near people; I always find a secluded spot. Not allowed? Many people were smoking in public. I see no harm in showing a few shots of children playing in the street. If I don’t have the parent’s permission, spoke to them or there were any kind of identifiable information, I would blur their face, like I’ve done in other videos. But, I will definitely reconsider AirbBnB, thanks.

@@GringoInterrupted Thx for reading. Means a lot. It is not allowed, drinking and smoking. There is a law. And it is true, many locals drink and smoke in public 😑. But try to be better, just because they let it pass, does not mean it is allowed. If you can not help it, read the surroundings: you see locals doing it, then you can do it, you see locals making faces at you, better stop. Also there is a law about filming children in public spaces. They can be identified. And can be dangerous for you too... there are cases where they think you are kidnaper and filming potencial victims. Most cases you get hit in the face and the phone broken, in other communities you get killed. Oaxaca is very very welcoming to tourist who show interest in the city and traditions. Who get to know our food, our legends and learn from it. Not only is a sign of respect but of belonging. If you try to speak to them in spanish, it means a lot. It you learn zome zapotec or mixtec frases means alot. Talk to locals, they will guide you, for free. Finally, don´t think it Oaxaca is Cancun or Disney World. Look around and enjoy the steady pace, find a place to call yours and try to make it better for all of us. It could be as easy as picking up garbage, tiding up the table after eating, saying hola and adios, thanking for a good service... That´s my two cents, come back any time and try to make the world better. 😀

​@davidrodriguezmendeza7037 This is absolutely true about Airbnb, and I agree that people should stop using it, however, without the government limiting the use of Airbnb, it will forever be a problem. Where I live, the government has limited Airbnb's to the primary residence of the owner so that people cannot buy up property and push out locals for Airbnb use. I hope that the people of Mexico can pressure the government to make changes to limit these things.

En mi ciudad de Vancouver también hay mucha gentrificación por parte de los extranjeros, lo que hace que la ciudad sea casi demasiado cara para vivir para una persona promedio. Sin embargo, es inútil protestar contra los extranjeros, porque, en mi opinión, es tarea del gobierno hacer cambios para limitar el problema.
