Coming back to this video, I apologize for the somewhat scuffed microphone quality. The audio was recorded using my phone at around 4AM with no real expectation of people being interested in it. I have since upgraded my microphone and all other videos on this channel should have improved recording. 👍

honestly, you could've gotten away with recording on your phone if you didnt use your headphones, especially if you have an iphone. DankPods has been getting away with it since he started his channel.

@@caseyleenb I could have done a lot of things to improve this audio recording and I had other options available, but at the time I had just finished the project and was ready to just record my audio and sleep. I didn't realize it was this scuffed until I played it back on my PC after... but I didn't really want to re-record the entire thing and, frankly, I didn't think a lot of people would view this video! I have since upped my game a lot, so coming back to this video and hearing it kinda makes me cringe, but oh well. I learned from my mistakes and try to improve with each new recording.

If I remember correctly the Pokémon community has been making strides in E-Reader code development for the Gen 3 games. They've been able to create completely new events within the limitations of the E-Reader's implementation in Gen 3. Maybe speaking with them might be helpful, although I don't really understand any of it so Gen 3 Pokémon's E-Reader crafting might not translate to Animal Crossing. The channel "im a blisy" is where I found the E-Reader stuff.

Man I remember when someone online told me 20 years ago how he had disassembled Animal Crossing to find that the four games were specifically blacklisted, and I ended up using an Action Replay to get the games. This was pretty much the first time Nintendo made retro games available (and by the fact they were basically free you can tell Nintendo thought old games were worthless).
@Helladamnleet

I had them, I don't really recall how I had them, but I would imagine it would have had to have been using an action replay since they were never officially released. Fun fact: It's actually a fully featured NES emulator written for the Gamecube and it's 100% possible to add different roms. In fact I wanna say there is even a romless NES item.

I just thought of how funny it would be if the e-Reader hadn’t’ve flopped and so Nintendo came out with the e-Writer so that you can mail things from your save file to a friend in an envelope as a very Nintendo-y half attempt to make up for the GameCube not having internet capabilities (aside from that super clunky and expensive modem that they only used for Phantasy Star) It’d be the Gameboy Printer of the GameCube. Barely any games would use it, and the ones that would’d only use it to make up for the absence of other features. It’d be “easier” than codes, but also really slow and expensive, which we all know is the Nintendo way.

This reminds me of how in the Japanese version it was also possible to get these games without mods. but you had to use a generator someone made to create a fake secret code, as Nintendo distributed Famicom items on their website with codes generated depending on the recipient's player/town name. Reverse engineering the e-Reader code and creating a physical dotcode you can use just takes this a step further, and it's better because it can be universalized. (Also the e-Reader is more fun.) This was a very interesting video, great work. Also shoutout to the 30 people who won a magazine sweepstakes in Japan and can truly claim they got SMB legitimately. I wonder if they know how special it is...

I remember trying to print dotcodes as a child using the tool you mentioned here, so I could try and play some of the SMB3 e-Reader levels, but I didn't have a good enough printer. Now, thanks to amazing devs like you, the unfulfilled promise of the e-Reader is finally delivered. Thank you so much. All I want now are some fan-made reproduction cards, and I would be so very happy.

Another option is manufacturing a memory card file that delivers bonus letters to the player. Can have up to 10 letters with items attached, and they are removed from the file every time they are delivered. This would require the ability to modify a GC memory card which would be easy enough with a Wii. This was originally used to give free items on the memory card bundled with the game.

I wish Nintendo would their lesson, that releasing exclusive content through toys, online events (often region locked) is not good for their games legacy. If anything, it's only gotten worse over the years. So much content lost to time just so they can make a quick buck. Also getting litigious towards people who do stuff like make mods for their own games even over 10 years after. Good work for what you've done, and I hope Nintendo doesn't force you all to remove your progress from the internet.

You went through all the trouble and effort of researching an old, rarely used piece of tech just to reverse engineer Nintendo's dot codes to unlock some ROMs in a 23 year old Gamecube game for no reason other than it would be neat to figure out. I won't pretend to understand more than a few of the technical details, but man I hope one day I find something to be as passionate about as you are with Animal Crossing. It turns out my parents had an e-reader. I think it’s pretty cool how it worked, at least the setup we had. We had the reader, GameCube, and the Gameboy Player/disc for the GameCube. Then, we had card packs for NES games. It needed 10 card swipes of data, which was cumbersome, but when it worked, it was fun and really neat to play NES on GameCube.

I remember seeing a video several years ago talking about these hidden NES games inside AC, and how to unlock them. There was a legit method, in game, to receive these games through the mail services, no peripherals (such as a GBA) needed! I don't remember the exact method, as I didn't (and still don't) own the game, so I hadn't bothered to memorize it, but I do remember it was luck based, so one can waste days attempting this again and again before finally getting the desired outcome. I doubt I can find that video again, if it even still exists, but if I do, I'll edit this comment with a link.

Hey man amazing video! Quick question, why cant you just dupe the dot code from the original cards? Unless I’m misunderstanding something it sounds like copies of the original card cannot be printed out and scanned successfully. Is that because of the material/size or rather the space in the physical print being too small for normal printers to replicate? Thanks!
@Hunter-R.
@Hunter-R. 7 ай бұрын
There are no original cards for these two games since Nintendo never publicly released them in any form, so you have to figure out how to make them yourself like I did in this video. You can indeed get the dot code data of other officially released cards and print them off yourself for them to work perfectly fine, but again there are no official cards available to "dupe" for Super Mario Bros. or Legend of Zelda.

@@WhatIThoughtChannel I believe the models and data relating to Super Mario Bros. and Legend of Zelda were removed in e+ anyways. I swear to god I got Zelda and SMB from a gamestop promotional or something of the like - I distinctly remember my memory card that came with the game allowing me to have the two NES games (via mail perhaps?), as they were some of the first items I had in my house, and it inspired me to try and collect every NES game within Animal Crossing (which I eventually did!) I never owned an action replay and to this day wonder how exactly it is I got Zelda and Super Mario Bros if this is some sort of false memory, since I definitely created a new town and character the day I got the game and it was not a town with cheated items preloaded onto it. Am I crazy here?

You're correct in that the original Animal Crossing came packaged with a special memory card with present data on it. This present included "K.K. Love Song," a letter from Nintendo, and two NES games. However, these two NES games came from a grab bag which was specifically programmed to only pull from the "common" NES game list, of which Super Mario Bros. and Zelda were not included. So, you definitely got two NES games, but they were not Zelda or Super Mario Bros.

Dang, I wonder how I got those two games then. Childhood memory is always so fickle. Thank you for the reply though! Your work is amazing as always.

Google “Animal Crossing e-Reader cards in .RAW format” and you can pretty easily find every officially released e-Reader card data for download. This includes Mario Bros. and Ice Climber, but I just can’t directly link it here. Hope this helps!
