Rusty (Brad Pitt) gives Terry (Andy Garcia) the terms of the robbery over the phone while in his casino, then bumps in to Tess (Julia Roberts).
FILM DESCRIPTION:
A rag-tag group of con artists and ex-cons team up for the heist to end all heists in this high-profile remake of the 1960 Rat Pack favorite. As with its predecessor, Ocean's Eleven opens with its titular hero Danny Ocean (George Clooney stepping into the Frank Sinatra role) eager for a new challenge. The similarities to the original end there, as Ocean conspires with his old pal Rusty Ryan (Brad Pitt) to rob 150 million dollars from an underground vault that serves three of Las Vegas' biggest casinos. Between the two of them, they recruit nine other men, each with his own criminal specialty, to assist in the mission: moneyman Reuben Tishkoff (Elliot Gould), card dealer Frank (Bernie Mac), pickpocket Linus (Matt Damon), aging con artist Saul (Carl Reiner), British explosives pro Basher (Don Cheadle), techie Dell (Eddie Jemison), rude-boy brothers Virgil (Casey Affleck) and Turk (Scott Caan), and professional acrobat Yen (Shaobo Qin). What Ocean doesn't tell the group is that there's another reason he's coordinating the heist: the three casinos they're robbing are all owned by ruthless gambling mogul Terry Benedict (Andy Garcia), who just happens to be married to Ocean's former love Tess (Julia Roberts). Ocean's Eleven was updated by scribe Ted Griffin and marked the third feature shot by director Steven Soderbergh under the alias Peter Andrews.

@@makita3680 "Just met" is a stretch. We get no timeline for how long they've been together. Also, in fairness, he lost 163 MILLION dollars in one night, and in both sequels, his fortunes don't really seem like they've soured at all, so I'm not sure that money was THAT important to him beyond just his ego being bruised by being robbed, so he clearly discarded Tess fairly easily.

That's the point of the scene. Just when she's starting to put things together (she realizes Danny planted the cell phone in her pocket) Benedict dismisses her like a child. That's the moment she realized she was just an accessory to him.

$163,156,757 in $100 bills would weigh 1631 kilos, or a little under 3600 lbs. Divided by 11 is $14,832,432, so each member would walk away with 14.8 million which translates to 148 kilos/327 lbs. That means that each of the guys impersonating the SWAT team members at the end would have been carrying well over 400 lbs each on their way out of the casino.

Edit: This is a reply to someone that since deleted his comment. For context, he said that the crew said they were only taking half (which they didn't- they took the full amount): 80 million between 11 guys is 7.2 million per member which would be 72 kilos/159 lbs. For the average person carrying 100 lbs is difficult, much less carrying 159 lbs over at least the 1/4 mile from the casino vault to the SWAT van that the guys would have been carrying. Also, all 11 guys weren't impersonating the SWAT team. If memory serves there was no more than 8 guys. 80 million is 800 kilos/1763 lbs, so between 8 guys that would mean 220 lbs per guy. Go to your local gym and try carrying 110 lbs in each hand on the treadmill for 1/4 mile without dropping the weight or pausing for a break. In other words, realistically there's no way those guys could have made off with anywhere close to the total amount of cash that was in that vault.

Was it really a smart idea to make the call from inside of his casino? The hotel could have easily detained him and turned him into a hostage of their own. That's probably what would have happened in real life :))

I agree with you. I agree with azu in that they wouldnt have spotted him right away. But they wouldve ran through the tapes with a fine tooth comb, seen Rusty talking on a cell, being interrupted by Tess (who he knows had contact with the robbers somehow since she knew that Benedict was willing to trade her for the money), and then seeing Rusty leave the phone laying out and exiting the casino. As we saw in 13, he is in the FBI database as a known thief with known associates that included the other crew members.

Now. Here is the real question. How did they get the bags full of flyers in the Casino vault in the first place. for Benedicts men to then carry them out to the van?. because you can see in the movie, the "swat" team, didn't arrive till after the van is loaded and drives away. so it was not brought in with them.

George Clooney also said in an interview when they asked him about it that “we all know I’m never really dead in those types of movies”. Clooney and Pitt ruled out any additional movies with the original crew after the 2008 death of Bernie Mac, who played Frank Catton. Since then, Carl Reiner (Saul Goodman) died in 2020, further diminishing any chances of another movie. If it happens, it will be a reboot.

My question: How did the hooker brochures end up in the bags? The bags were carried by Benedict's men from the elevators to the truck, which means that somehow those brochures were in the vault or brought in by Ocean's team. But Linus and Danny didn't have them. So how did it work? Any ideas?

well remember that camera footage was faked. They probably faked on camera filling all the money into bags than taking half the bags. So perhaps they had just filled their suits and gear with those brochures.

Benedict is an egomaniac. To him, getting his ego bruised demands much more than just the cops catching the crooks. He's not above murder, violence, and committing crimes of his own to deal with rivals and enemies. Besides, if he reported the money stolen, his own dark deeds might've been exposed in this case. Danny and his guys could've pointed out that Benedict illegally detained him and had him beaten up by his guards.

@@Interestingenough4 funny you say that. The law often o idea by the “law of clean hands”. The law is very willing to help people who abide the law. It’s called the doctor-an of “clean hands”. Benedict was forced to peruse his form of “justice” because he’s a corrupt person. Absolutely ZERO sympathy here lol.

@@toniroberts8117 It was revealed later in the sequels that the money was insured, so he got it back anyways. Besides, it wasn't as if Danny got off scot-free, Benedict turned him in for parole violation. After that and getting reimbursed, he had no further reason to go after Danny's gang. But no, he wanted revenge to soothe his butthurt ego, and wasted time and resources threatening Danny's gang and likely their friends and families. By the end of the series, his pride was in shreds. Danny and the gang, with LeMarque's help, forced The Night Fox to cover Benedict's demands, essentially pulling one over on Benedict. And then in the third movie, his double-crossing was so predictable that the gang conned him out of his share of Willy Bank's loot. His criminal credibility was neutered, and he'd gotten played by his bitter rival THREE times!

@@Interestingenough4 he got interviewed and thanked by Oprah when she was at her most powerful. He got tons of great press. The last scene shows the big three watching in disbelief that he beat them.
