Hi Russ and greetings from Grand Rapids, MI KGRR ;) Just ordered my OCTAVI last week and am anxious to try it out. I think it will be especially helpful to my 17yr old grandson who is beginning his Private Pilot journey. Thank you! To be continued… Randy (CFI-I)

Looking forward for further teats with the Octavi. A video on how it works on airliners or the cj4. Also the installation and setup procedure would be great to see (you mentioned a plugin which is required).

I use the Thrustmaster MFD in VR and its all in several reference points on the device and muscle and button memory. Then it works good in VR. the problem is switching airplane with different button assignments like I did try in DCS. That will mess things up since your my aged brain can not handle all this button layout anymore. But sticking to one layout that works accross platforms and planes would be no problem. There are enough ridges and knobs to navigate with feeling around the device. I modded several device to give me reference points in touch to navigate around the knobs.

That's a cool product. Thanks for the review Russ. As far as getting it angled, if you know how to use Fusion 360 and have a 3D printer, you could design a holder for it and buy some rubber feet to keep it from slipping.

Nice little product! I've just started building my cockpit and recently got air manager and a touch screen and am loving it so far. Was thinking about getting the knobster but for the extra cost and the extra buttons you get I may go for this now... My only two concerns are being able to mount it to something sturdy (would be nice if it came with more permanent mounting solution) and the USB placement. Would be great if they could get it on the rear of the device but given it's small size that may not be possible, however I'd rather have it side or bottom mounted than on the top of the device, much harder to hide the cables like that.

Looks like a great little gadget. Like the possibility to set the frequencies. I think the price is a bit steep though. As my other gaming peripherals have some of the same functionality, I don't think that I'll be getting this any time soon.

Thanks for the explanations. I got mine yesterday and did not have as much luck (skill) figuring it out as you did. I found the instructions for MS 2020 to be slightly awkward. You didn’t mention The two downloads that need to go in your community folder. Although I may have that wrong. Also, that you have to start it after the SIM is running. thanks again.

There are "streamdeck" type things that, while not *quite* as pretty, also have dials, with buttons that can be labelled and such for... around the same price (Kickstarter for this was around $200 right?)... so it's certainly a nice bit of kit but the streamdeck thing could probably be more easily modified to work with different setups. Oh well.

REally nice device, and I almost ordered it during the kickstarter, but missed the best pricing. Curious if the airport you entered is an indication of where your base is. I am near KLNS and would love your input on my flight sim and how to get all the Air Manager offerings working correctly. I was only able to attend the Friday session at FSExpo in Houston, but was hoping to see more there. Any way we could communicate offline and I could glean some knowledge from you?

This looks like the answer ! Did knobster influence this ? Ive been trying to add G1000 G530? G3000 knobs to MSFS - and cant find anything that makes sense. Isnt everyone trying to avoid mouse turning knobs function ? I guess I was hoping that MSFS would finally add some kind of functions that allow to assign these - like Xplane does (mostly). I have been looking at SPAD NExt but ... uhhh... I kinda figured I would run out of energy. I may not have listened closely - what will this cost ??

It works great for what it is designed for to control the Garmin G430 and 530. It is adaptable to other uses, but not nearly as flexible as Knobster, which along with Air Manager can control any knob on an Air Manager panel. It is well-made and works great

You can configure it for the G1000 using MobiFlight. It isn't as seamless, but you can get most things working. Add in a few unlabeled functions (e.g. FLC can be mapped to the toggle button when the device is in "AP" mode). You will need to look up the specific datarefs for the buttons in the particular aircraft you are flying (at least in X-Plane).

12:06 I fly DCS, MFSF 2020 just fine with a Retro fighter Blade Game cube controller and really any modern gamepad would work well... Which the hardest part at first with DCS was not the lack of support for game pad it's just another controller after all... But the lack of a good look funtion for right stick... But they fixed that... the issue I have with MSFS 2020 is the odd control behavor with different aircraft and the lack of toggle cbutton options in the controls layout like set is ok not great and if they got that wrong how are HOTAS supposed to work? But any way I would love to try that monstasity as a comntroller collector even if I find it unneed when an Xbox series gamepad is fine and maybe a keyboard and mouse if you need to interact with the cockpit.

If I'd heard about this earlier, I'd have bought one - but as it is they're not available now that the Kickstarter has finished. I would have liked a way to (semi)permanently fix this to a panel - a couple of pre-drilled holes for screws would do. Hopefully, they'll produce more and release them to market....

Hi Russ, As you know I make similar devices, and I think they missed an opportunity, although a very good looking unit, I am sure it would have been better if they designed several devices to do unique functions ie an autopilot device, just not sure of the keep swapping function and using the same encoder kind of looses its appeal for myself. How does it function with the recient AAU2 update esp on g3000- btw great review.

I agree but I think they are trading cost for convenience. I prefer your devices but as an industrial design exercise these are solidly made and quite elegant in appearance. So far as I know your designs are still all DIY projects? Most end users are afraid to undertake these projects. Have you considered making your instruments available in a completed form?

@rbarlow
@rbarlow 8 ай бұрын
No but it could be a adjunct to the Knobster if you are going to fly an airplane with a G530 most of the time. The Knobster can emulate any knob on a Air Manager Panel … Octavi can emulate the knobs and buttons on a G530 / 430 even without Air Manager

Does this plug right in and play, or does one have to go through a long and complex process of arranging what the keys do with the sim, like what is necessary (and, for most of us, not done!) with the Honeycomb Bravo? What about FS2020? It has nowhere near as straighforward an interface as XP (although the XP interface still requires a great deal of programming) - in fact, FS2020 apparently requires actual computer programming, a la coding, and other software like FSUIPC, to even think about getting functionality. I have a home made button box, which is a bit more sophisticated than this one, which for all practical purposes is limited to XPlane since FS2020 requires far more to set up, if in fact it can be done at all.....
@pi.actual

The concept is good however, as I have seen with many of these devices, they tend to go overboard on the physical optics and therefore limit the versatility of the unit. It would be better to have exchangeable overlays rather than labels on the button faces to allow for different configurations. The goal of a device like this is to completely eliminate the need for mouse or keyboard inputs, not to replicate the panel graphics of the simulator.
@rbarlow
@rbarlow 11 ай бұрын
I agree. I prefer the flexibility of a touch screen and Knobster or something like a Streamdeck . For people who only use G530/430 equipped aircraft this one trick pony might be perfect.

I believe a display should be included. if I want to change the frequency of the radio during the flight ... I have to use the mouse to move the camera and see what I am setting ... so I can also set the frequency using the mouse. It makes no sense. There should be a display that allows you to set parameters without using the mouse.

As I said I believe a touchscreen and Knobster using Air Manager is more bang for the buck. I agree this is somewhat limited in its usefulness. The main appeal is its size and portability
