-From the most pristine source element ever found, here is the Bottom 8th to the Conclusion of the greatest game in baseball history, Game 3 of the 1951 NL Playoffs in which the Giants capped their comeback from 13.5 games out with Bobby Thomson's "Shot Heard Round The World". Gordon McLendon calls the game for the Liberty Network which was heard nationwide on 431 stations.
-A full game recording of this same Liberty broadcast has been in circulation for many years but that comes from a home recording on WCFL-Chicago and the audio quality of it reflects the technical limitations of the day. By contrast, this final portion of the game comes from a transcription disc done right in the press box evidently because the sound quality is that pristine. You can hear details not easy to make out on the common version of this game such as the chuckling of McLendon's producer/engineer in the background, the voice of the Polo Grounds PA announcer and most importantly of all, for the first time you can clearly hear the crack of the bat as Bobby Thomson hits his immortal HR (which I have synched to film footage at that particular moment).
-Russ Hodges' famous "The Giants win the pennant!" call of the game on WMCA Radio for the Giants network only exists in a fragmentary home recording. Red Barber's call on WMGM for the Dodger network also exists. Other calls that remain lost include Ernie Harwell's television call over NBC and Harry Caray's call for a separate national broadcast done by Mutual.
