Got the OSB decking down and was able to start first course of logs. One of my viewers from Oregon contacted me to let me know of a better way to do the corners.
Here's the forum where you can get the booklet. He goes by Stoney.

I love the fact you are making an addition. I watch other guys in the bush making cabins but when they are done, well that's it. You never see them again until they build another one somewhere else six months or a year later, if that. You know that cabin is probably too small. But that was all they could afford. And that's great. But I often mention to them to build an addition. It's not that expensive compared what you just spent. You are doing it. and you keep your viewers and you get to keep building. I can't wait to see what you have coming up next.

if you take a close look at your the growth rings of your end grain of your 2x8's you can determine which direction they are going to cup. I suggest laying up your 'logs' so that the outside ply's will cup in. Then as mother nature and the wood does it's thing, you will wind up with a tighter structure as it drys.😊

@@TheOffGridExperience I really like the sandwich method that you've employed. I do have a suggestion on tying the addition's walls to the main cabin. If you were to apply a vertical 2X2 to the cabin and leave a 1 1/2" gap in the center at the end of your log, you would be able to easily tie the addition walls to the main structure's walls (just as you did to the floor). By doing this, you would eliminate the 2X2 from being seen as well as it becoming a more intregal part of the wall's support. My only other suggestion would have been to use a foaming glue such as that used for underlament to floor joist when stacking your logs. This would help form an air gap while also gluing the two logs together. Your build has inspired me to build similarly for my Kentucky retirement home. (I will also have a place in the south, likely a condo). Originally, my wife and I decided to sell our 4,000 sq ft home and build two smaller ones. The plan is still to do it, but a simple, rustic cabin is much more in keeping with our property than a small two bedroom farmhouse. Congrats on your work! I only hope that I may immitate it.

I like the cabin you’re building. You might want to install “L”flashing around the perimeter to cover the OSB from the weather? I see the red ring of OSB on the rest of the cabin. The torching method may not be enough protection for the OSB edges? Once they start wicking water, it’s over. Not trying to be an arm chair quarterback, you may have protected the OSB edges for all in know. Can’t wait to see the next video.

Since you need to cut the door to the bathroom, it can be done after the wall is built. Why didn't you leave the wall to the bedroom intact and cut the opening once that room was done? That way you would not have had the air infiltration issues with the barn doors. I just want to understand the process. Thanks for the great content. I love how you mix building with scenery with cooking with music.

Thanks for watching 👍 The bedroom door opening was roughly 5ft x 7ft so I didn't want to to waste all that wood by having to cut it out after wall was built. Also, it opened the place up to a nice view during construction.

I went to the link provided for Stoney's cabin booklet and saw no cabin built with this method there...only a small 8x12 stick built with smooth board siding. He does offer a booklet, but if it is just stick built I have plenty of experience with that. Is there somewhere else I might find a video or pictures of his actual cabin built in the method you are using? Probably would not need a booklet, but would get one just to see if I pick up any new tricks to use this method. I am also thinking about using D log for the exterior 2x8 and doug fir dimensional for the other 2 pieces needed....cost of wood will determine that. Thanks for your vids, timely for me as I plan to start a 14x24 this spring on my hill out back with long range views.

Are you adding some kind of air-gap sealing between the outer wall of the main cabin, and the log ends on the bedroom extension? E.g. butting the "logs" up towards a vertical 2x2 glued and screwed to the cabin wall, or e.g. some beads of glue on the "log" ends.

I am running a 2x2 vertically as a guide and plan to butt the ends to the main cabin. However, I am not gluing or screwing the addition to the main cabin yet. I'm going to wait and let the logs settle and then go back and tie the addition logs to the main cabin.

I watch a lot of these videos because one day I want to get a piece of property in the woods and build a cabin. Your building technique is really ingenious and looks great! One question that never seems to be addressed in any of these build videos is local building codes, permits, and inspections. Are you in an area that's exempt, or do you not have to because of footprint/size or because it's off grid? Or are you just not worrying about it? Not that there's anything wrong with your build at all - I just wonder in my own case if it's wise to just go out and build something that might come back to haunt you when you try to sell or add on to.

Thanks for watching 👍 Every state and county is different. If you plan to live in it, you definitely want to check your local codes before building. Take care!

Awesome build! How many screws are used in each log? Are they hidden?

Yes, I sink them in about a 1/4”. Every 2-3ft top and bottom.

Let me just say I think the cabin is AWESOME, I have a question on the burning of soft box store wood, I cant find much info on burning soft woods , do you feel like it will hold up for the long run? I am wanting to do a small outdoor building like this.

I think it will. A little over a year and no signs of rot or warping. Thanks for watching 👍

Did you have any special groove cut for the corners to connect where they intersected? Or just you just but the ends against eachother and overlap?
@TheOffGridExperience
@TheOffGridExperience Жыл бұрын
On main shell I did a basic butt and pass system. On additions, I am doing more of a notched corner that is better and eliminates air gaps.

Nice videos! One question that I'm having is if this building technique is suitable for environments that have more heavy winters? Will the 2x8 blocks resists the cold winters ? I did also did not see that you are using any insulation, I guess you don't need it in that area ?
@TheOffGridExperience

It's done well in zero degrees. As long as you keep a fire going, you should be fine. Only insulation I used was on roof and underneath - foil foam.

Question out of curiosity... why did you build around window frames? instead of building the wall and cutting out windows later? Was it to waste less lumber?. Anyway, awesome build.
@TheOffGridExperience
@TheOffGridExperience Жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching 👍 I'm going to build the walls and then cut out the windows for the additions. I think it will go faster.

Are those pressure treated boards? And if so, are you concerned about being in constant contact with the chemicals? Also, how stable are the wall connections without screws to lock everything in???
@TheOffGridExperience

No pressure treated wood was used except foundation posts.
