In this video we take you on a land tour of our 12 acre plot in the Spanish mountains. We share the condition of the land now, and how we intend to manage the land on our off grid homestead. We talk about water harvesting and land erosion, and how important it will be to our off grid tiny house build project, as we're already starting to see some land erosion problems due to the lack of water management.

We're Danny and Kate. 5 years ago we moved from the UK to Barcelona, and after a few years enjoying the busy city, sunny beaches and snow-capped mountains it's time for a new adventure. We've recently bought land in Spain, in the mountains of Catalunya, to build a mortgage free tiny house and start a self-sustainable homestead to live off the land.

Get a herd of goats to clear the brush. You can use solar charger and elec mesh fencing so they will eat everything in each area before you move them to new area. You border collie can lear to help you move them.

Unfortunately we’re not at the land enough yet (not living there permanently) to have livestock, but we love the idea of working with animals to improve the land once we’re able - we’re thinking goats and sheep for clearance, pigs to till the land and chickens to fertilise. All future steps. But ones we’re very excited about

Run the overflow from the cisterna into a second tank further down and away from the house so It stays where you can use it and doesn't wash away your soil/walls. Second tank can be used for watering the garden, etc. Just leading it away from the house doesn't slow down the flow and the speed is what destroys those walls + the water washes away precious topsoil and doesn't infiltrate into the ground watering your trees.

I've lived on a farm in southern Spain and have a little piece of advice. Try not to get rid of too much ground cover. It protects the very barren soil from degrading even more. Even if you get rid of some brushes, etc. do not burn them as at some point they will be very useful for covering the ground when it's a dry season. Which is most of the year in southern Spain 😂

It's really impressive how little of the terracing needs repair. Clearly you have some specific problems near the house, but the land must have had an owner who was particularly good at dry stone walling. Do keep an eye on your boundaries. My sister in SW France had a farmer neighbour who encroached, and in the end they had to call in a surveyor and replace several boundary markers. They think he was just trying it on with the Brits and backed off once they noticed and made a fuss.

You have a lot of useable land there and - as you said - some great views. With the amount of clearance needed I think you will probably need a ‘tech’ solution. My advice would be to buy a decent chainsaw and do a general clearance but concentrate on one or two terraces for a more intensive clearance. These could be the basis of your growing areas, so that you can start to produce your own vegetables and plant some fruit trees. These would obviously be better located close to you house and adjacent to the cisterna. I loved the video and look forward to seeing your project progress.
@SmithsdaleFarm
@SmithsdaleFarm 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Ron. Definitely thinking of focusing on a couple of terraces first, as you suggested, close to the house. We’re taking a bit of time to decide which tools to get first, but probably a chainsaw and a chipper will make the shortlist! There’s so much material that we can use to add carbon to the land-an opportunity not to be missed!
@RaymondChipLambert

Absolutely! We’ve been doing a lot of research into permaculture-it’s been one of our big interests for years now. Been watching a lot of Geoff Lawton and his Greening the Desert concepts too. In the summer it can be very hot and dry in this part of Spain, so definitely interested in chop and drop and nitrogen fixers etc.

A lot of commercial olive trees are grafts, so shoots from the root ball may not be as productive (tiny, wild olives, as you are seeing now) than from the original, plus old mature trees like your neighbours are often past their prime, with low yields, so you might be better of planting a few new trees too. Unfortunately you need to grub out old root balls as they are near-impossible to kill. If growing olives, the soil needs to be kept bare of competing growth, sheep are good for this.
@SmithsdaleFarm
@SmithsdaleFarm 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the tips about the olives and grafts etc. There seem to be a couple of different leaf shapes, indicating maybe different varieties and/or wild olives. The olives developing on some of the trees seem to be much bigger and a different shape to others, so we’re hoping we might get lucky with some. We’ll be keeping an eye on them as we prune more around the land, and as they recover throughout this year and next - then we’ll have a better idea of which ones we need to graft/replace etc. Tough road ahead. So sad they were all cut to the base. But we’ll do the best with what we have 🙂
@stephengrimmer35
@stephengrimmer35 2 жыл бұрын
@@SmithsdaleFarm unless you are after oil, which means harvesting several tonnes and joining the co-op, a handful of trees will give you all the eating olives you need. You might do a deal with the neighbours to maintain/harvest the rest in return for a small allocation of oil. A good tree normally yields 20-50kg, which is around 3-7 litres, the co-ops generally go 50:50 i.e. they keep every 2nd liter. Bear in mind they generally fruit every 2nd year on an individual tree basis, although mine always seem to synchronize (I've 240 on 0.8 Ha). Yes, you definitely have some gone wild, so prune them back to a single trunk asap, and keep on top of any suckers. You can plant a few eating varieties which are big enough to fruit in 2-3 years, around the time it will take to get yours right again, so start now. You can get them from €20+ if you use co-ops and not ornamental specimens from garden centres. If you plant new, FENCE THEM, ditto any figs and fruit trees. You need to build a SOLID cage around each tree, at least 1.5m high . I don't see any wild goats but 100% guaranteed they are out there!!! and a herd can destroy 2-3 years work in minutes!👍

I didn't realise when watching your vlog on your purchase that your land was so tiered. I guess the big problem here (and from what i have read) is that the rain constanly moves the bancels and that in turn is moving your boundary line. Good idea to speak to the neighbours as you don't want any disputes. I too would also be gutted to learn the olive trees were cut down :-( Looking forward to next weeks edition :-)
@SmithsdaleFarm

Yes, I think the drone footage really shows the expanse..! It’s about 13/14 terraces from the road down to the valley! Hopefully with proper water harvesting and management, we won’t have too many issues with the boundary line changing - instead it will just be check which bancal is the one which separates theirs from ours 🤞🏻

I'm wondering if ponds fed by swales at the top of the land would help with the erosion problem. I've watched too many permaculture videos I guess. It's interesting to learn about 'bancals' ? (Unsure if I heard right). I guess there would have been a past water control system connected to these? www.permaculturenews.org/2017/08/01/storing-water-landscape-swales-ponds-primer/
@SmithsdaleFarm
@SmithsdaleFarm 2 жыл бұрын
Yes we’ve also watched loads of stuff about Swales and permaculture. With the bancals in place it will probably be very hard to use Swales as there will not be a “natural” line to follow. But we are thinking to make more cisternas or watcher catchment around strategic points of the land, and then have a state of connected IBCs that will gravity feed and level between one another, to then manage the water around the landscape. By having, say, 10-15 IBCs - we’d be able to collect enough throughout the year to manage both our own consumption plus water for plants and/or animals without issue.

Get some goats and movable electric fencing. They eat and fertilize.

Thanks for the suggestion Philip. We’re considering that, and also pigs.. because we want to put as much carbon into the soil as possible early on. Maybe cutting, mulching, and getting them to root and turn it all up. Lots of options to think through 🤔

@@SmithsdaleFarm I am not a pig fan. They destroy soil. A small chipper shredder may be better for you. Also I don’t know about Spain but most our counties here have Agricultural Agents that will help you develop a land use plan. Maybe consider a small truck instead of a car. Bees might be an option until you can spend more time there. Mulch the top of your land first as all the nutrients will leech down the slope. Beans, peas, lupine flowers all fix nitrogen.

Buy or rent goats. They eat all the worst things imaginable. Plus, they eat while you renovate, so you're doubling productivity!

Yes, we’ve been looking at that as an option. We need to get lots of carbon into the soil too, so also considering chopping it back and using it to mulch, then perhaps pigs to root and turn it 🤔

We aren’t in a rush. We live in Barcelona, not on the land yet.. so we have plenty of time to work on the house and the land, and build our life in the mountains. We would much rather research and plan, and work to a high quality (and debt free) rather than jumping in from day 1 and making mistakes that are expensive to fix. But thanks for your comment anyway 🙃
