Our tiny house build project continues on our off grid homestead in Spain. This week we're cracking on with the first step of the roof for our tiny cabin in the woods-installing a vapour barrier and battens in preparation for the solid roof. This light steel frame construction is really starting to take shape now, with the floor, walls, bracing and roof beams all in place.
Working in 34 degrees heat (93 fahrenheit!) on our little homestead was a challenge to say the least! How much can we get done on our off grid tiny house build before the summer heat really hits us??

About Us:
We're Danny and Kate. In 2015 we moved from the UK to Barcelona, and after a few years enjoying the busy city, sunny beaches and snow-capped mountains it's time for a new adventure. We've recently bought land in Spain, in the mountains of Catalunya, to build a mortgage free tiny house and start a self-sustainable off-grid homestead to live off the land.

Yes… we try to make the most of our time to be as productive as possible. But sometimes the jobs just take longer than we have in a weekend. Hopefully soon we will be able to start spending longer there 🤞🏻

Gosh you two are troopers, I know how it feels to give it your all under the hot sun for a full weekend, followed by a long drive home and work the next day... but I couldn't keep it up as long as you have, OR be half as productive! The cabin is looking great and you're gonna be sooooo proud of yourselves when it's done!

I continue to be so inspired by you guys and love Paco! (We have a 9 year old BC...Scout). I am curious about growing the grapes under the pines. I have been trying to figure out what to grow under mine (Boulder CO climate) and would love to try grapes. Do you know what variety they are and whether you get a frost or cold temps at your altitude?
@SmithsdaleFarm
@SmithsdaleFarm 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you Wendy! This one was inherited, and just where it happened to be growing. We actually have no idea what variety it is… we’re hoping we might be able to identify it once we see it fruit. We’ve been researching about tiered permaculture, where you have things growing at different levels-tall canopy trees, mid height fruiting tree, lower bushes and climbers, and then low/floor level plants. Really interesting concepts, that we hope to try out and share, when we’re ready to start our bigger land and growing projects later in the year. We will definitely share as much as we can, as we learn! 💚

Are there any max dimensions for the tiny house or new cabins you are allowed to build. Also does it make a difference if you plan to live there full time or just use it as a holiday destination in terms of regulations
@SmithsdaleFarm
@SmithsdaleFarm Жыл бұрын
Ye there are a lot of regulations about what you can and can’t do, then each village takes its own view on those. You’d not get permanent dwelling permission for something like we are building, you need running water and toilets etc. Something under 15m2, in principle, is ok to build, but I would always recommend speaking to a local architect (common in Spain) or lawyer.

after over a year.... really not impressed. At least you 2 are making an effort. Property like that, the first thing is Contour Lines. Plenty of rocks just to move them. Just line rocks, nothing big. One decent size rock, and maybe 2 smaller in front of it. Nothing big, keep it simple. Have the land try to keep as much water that it can. No swales needed. Just slowing the water down. Find out how water moves throughout the property. Upper and lower catchments, your not going to build ponds. Just slow water down. Then address any water erosion. Use the rocks. The greener it is the cooler it stays
@SmithsdaleFarm
@SmithsdaleFarm 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your comment and tips about the water, Max. Appreciate it. As for progress.. we’re not trying to impress anyone… simply share our experience 🙃 There are plenty of KZfaqrs who have quit their jobs to move to the land and live 100% off grid during their renovation (most already have a van to live in comfortably). We’re showing that there’s still a way to do it, even when you both work full time jobs and live further away from your property.. that might be encouragement for some who would like to do the same, but don’t see anyone doing it 😁
