In this episode we finally finish the fence and are so pleased with the results. We also document the events of the forest fire.
Food Forest Begins: • Turning our ABANDONED ...
Building a Fence Part 1: • HOMESTEAD in the MOUNT...
Recently we planted our first food forest. A masterful step forwards for our homestead, a thing of dreams soon to be a luscious forest, laden with fruit, berries, and everything our family would need to survive. However, just like everything we try on this mountain, it all started to go spectacularly wrong when the mountain beasts decided to descend up it and create destruction. The jabali dug up all the small trees, broke down terraces, and used our apricots as scratching posts.
Week in week out we’ve been trying new methods to keep them out, then this week, the straw that broke the camels back, the mouflon broke in and nibbled the branches off pretty much every tree in the forest. We have had enough, the mountain beasts are about to get a serious shock, we’re going to build a proper fence, we’re talking galvanised steel posts, tensioned steel, fancy expensive fasteners, concrete, something that could stop an elephant.

The fence looks great - well done! You may need to put those thin iron bars used for re-enforcing concrete at the base of the fence to keep the wild boars out... I live in the south of France, and a year ago installed a nice new fence to keep a boar out of my garden. He continued to enter, digging a trench to force his way through the bottom of the fence. Only iron bars attached to the base of the fence, and then attached to stakes driven into the ground, kept them out! Hope you won't have the same experience, but guess you'll find out in time!

I was just watching you clear all the shrubbery branches, et cetera thinking that it’s a good idea to move it all out the way to stop fire spreading, love the wood that you cut up olivewood is beautiful and almond as well, then all the sudden all hell let loose, smoke on fire coming over the mountains, I feel so sad for you both, and of sage , amazing child, that must’ve been a terrifying moment thinking that you might have lost everything, As you put so much hard work and effort into your work over the years, Luckily, somebody is looking down on you, and yes, a time of stress brings out the worst in people sometimes, Especially when there is a dangerous situation, My heart goes out to you all, You obviously know that it is a good idea not to have things that grow around the house could burn very easily, I know in some properties over in Canada where they have had fires they sometimes have 2 to 300 m of cleared area around the property and even that is not enough in some cases, Carry on watching you are amazing adventure,

Thank you for another lovely comment Hog! Someone was definitely looking down on us that day, we will be forever grateful! We will definitely be clearing more of the land this year and making a big fire break at the bottom of our land where we are most vulnerable (fire coming up the slope from pine woods below). Yes we loved the olive wood fencing around the pond, although not sure it will actually stop the mouflon! Thanks again for your heartfelt message❤️

Being organic we obviously have to sacrifice quite a lot to the bugs, but with our growing diversity we are getting less and less bug problems which is nice. We grow a big variety of vegetables and recently planting berry bushes too. We really need to build a cold store so we can store our root veggies over long periods, but we're not sure how well cold stores work in hot climates like spain. We'll do a full video on how self sufficient we are soon. Sounds like you've made a good start already!

Hey, congratulations on your beautiful KZfaq channel. Your optimism after the many setbacks is inspiring. Thank you for allowing us to look into a part of your fascinating family life. A few comments, in all modesty: cement is a kind of super chemical superglue! Biologically undegradable, very bad for the environment! You use tons of it (a concrete roof ?) . Electric equipment (chainsaw, ...) is now equivalent if you choose from a professional range, with all that sun on that beautiful mountain in Spain, the solar energy seems exuberant to me. And finally, there is a special dry cement for securing posts: making a hole, place the post, pouring in dry cement and water and adjusting it, cement dries in less then 10 minutes, advantage: much less work, no more leveling supports. And finally: a drone provides beautiful images (just watch Martijn Doolaart's vlog) and allows us to participate even more. Keep on doing what you do, it's great (Bart from Belgium, using google translate)
@ladyandtheowlman
@ladyandtheowlman Ай бұрын
Thanks so much for your comment and advice Bart! We did research concrete quite a lot before using it on our project, and as long as we didn't use additives (which large construction buildings use for strengthening concrete etc), then the only downside would be the alkalinity of the surface runoff during rain... which can be beneficial to some plants (although not good for others). Greenhouse gasses from creating the cement isn't good, but we understand that lime (which makes up portland cement) is naturally occurring and therefore doesn't impact the ground other than the alkalinity aspect. But we'll make sure to do more research! Chainsaw - we're definitely keen to get an electric chainsaw, thanks for reminding us, we're not a fan of how much oil the chain gives off onto the trees when we're cutting them, not sure if you still have that problem with electric chainsaws though?! Dry cement for posts does seem like a good idea thanks for recommending, aligning the posts takes the most time! We're big fans of Martijn Doolaard and would love a drone like his, we're just trying to save up some money so we can get one!

All the metal scraps could be used to reinforce your fences. Okay, they do not look pretty, because they are not uniform, but keeping the wildlife out is more important especially as the fallen tree "fence" around the water tank does not look like it will withstand a thirsty boar or mouflon.

I think you can grow. almond. walnut, apricot , apple. peach , nectarine, fig pomegranate, cherry . Except Cherry, the rest you can put two seeds on top of each other and put soil on them and it will be a fantastic grafted tree root , for grapes, just find some good grapes, around Christmas, get some branches and put them deep in Ground, it will be fantastic grapes, as good as mother tree. for pomegranate and fig, you can get some branches from a good tree and dig a deep hole and put them in the whole, you will have fantastic fruit, don't buy the trees. this is what is did and i get lots of fruits. I wish you wouldn't cut the extra fence post, deer can jump over your short fence, you needed taller fence. you guys have adorable little boy, please be careful about mountain birds they can be dangerous for kids, keep him close yourself. also from snake. 😊😊😊

The movie-making skills you have are...well, considerable. That Robbie filmed during a crisis signaled to viewers that what they were seeing was not a totally filtered view. The same goes for the scenes where you are fretting with one another, as when Emilia wanted to plant a tree on a bank that Robbie was trying to reinforce against collapse. (She rightly stuck up for herself, & probably was in the right; roots hold banks.) Conflict, pain, anger--they're not a signal love is in danger; depends on how you handle difficulties, and how deep is the reservoir of trust. The framing of videos around work projects gets all of us involved in your plan of life. Shouldn't we too have a plan of life? Lots of people don't. Overall, it helps that the 'casting' is tops. For the female lead, you've got a beautiful woman whom the camera loves. Was Robbie a model too? Could have been. Both of you have lovely voices. Beautiful people don't always have beautiful voices. And Robbie as cameraman gives love to his woman--he indulges us with long shots of her bodily form, her funny faces, her crooked-toothed smile. I take it that Emilia may be the editor. She likes to show Robbie in fast-forward scenes of his toils on the land (how amazing! how funny!). || And the little lad--rhythmically taking to the lovely breast down the years--seems to all of us a very lucky child. When is it best to wean a child? Back in Missouri, where I grew up, they used to say, if the child standing on its own feet could nurse the standing mother, it was time to stop.

Hey Guys.. how you doing?....here is a little help for you. To stretch your fence!,... sandwich your fence between boards and then on one end of board put a circle hook and then on the other end another,.. then put a cable or chain though circle hooks [should look like this letter D. On outside belly of D-----< in center attach wire cable chain to fence puller or car hitch and pull gently.....and using of your car as an anchor works awesome.. tractor would work better but if you don't have one....use bumper of car to attach winch / fence puller to. just pull slowly.. it should tighten evenly for you. make sure boards you use as you sandwich fence between boards boards are tight. How to tighten them? every so far down board...length of board n center of board... drill holes through both boards and put bolts and nuts through all three.. board.....fence wire......board. Tighten... so tight!!!!..... fence does not move at all !!!! after sandwiching it through them!!! imperative it is real tight to have a straight up and down fence.... Here in the states this is how we install sheep fence....or tighten fence to install woven wire fence to keep cattle sheep in or out.
@ladyandtheowlman
@ladyandtheowlman Ай бұрын
Wow thanks Gary, this is a very detailed explanation which should give us everything we need to try ourselves! This sounds very effective for long stretches of fencing, how long is the fencing stretch you can do with this technique?
@garyfrederick7607
@garyfrederick7607 Ай бұрын
@@ladyandtheowlman we do a couple hundred yards at a time so what you doing should be simple. around corners though??? you need to make sure your corners are really tight in the ground.. your posts i mean.. and as for us we use heavy duty posts so they can withstand the pulling around a corner. But for you if you can ....say... put fence on corner,.. lay out fence then go past other corner,. Why? So you can either wrap fence around corner to hold it.. that is why it is imperative to have good heavy duty corners. We do what people call H braces....corner posts and then out about 6 to 8 feet another posts with brace across the middle like the Capital letter H and pull gently and stand fence up as someone pulls you will see how tight fence gets. when you think it is tight enough adhere fence to fence posts. On corners.. if that s where you stop... take a few strands off and tie them tightly to corner brace. then take a few more off... tie them off.. we wrap around post a few times.. then bring excess wire back and wrap around tight piece of fence wire you just stretched. USE another piece of wire to wrap back around wire and so it won't move up and down, especially if you use metal fence posts and not wooden ones. Wooden ones we use fence staples to hold fence. that way when your done fence is still tight and looks good doesn't come loose. and i saw the fire too WOW... you need to remove all debris and old grass around your property.. just saying.. here i have a buffer zone 2 cars long wide for that reason.. and i keep everything cut to the ground,... all to prevent the spread of fire on my place. I also keep a 250 gallon tank full of water and a pump that hooks to a battery just incase. it sits in my trailer come fall i empty it clean tank pump and put it up for next year..... but all dry debris and such should be immediately removed. Fire needs three things to be active air fuel and heat... and since you live where you live you have plenty of air because of mountain slopes... fuel all the dead stuff laying around.. yes even grass....and when fire goes it will have plenty heat... so remove all of the fuel and you should be fine. Take care life is an adventure be safe have fun always with you guys in watching your videos. hugs to you all.
