Күн бұрын

We left our city lives behind and moved to the top of a mountain in Spain, to live off-grid. We’ve spent 2 years alone, renovating an old stone house and restoring the abandoned land.
Ever since moving to the top of this mountain, our toilet experience has been primitive and, at times, traumatic.
We spent the first year on our homestead going to the toilet in the bushes, with a shovel and a knife, fighting for our place amongst the grunting wild boar.
The second year on our homestead, Emilia made some improvements. A make shift compost toilet built from pallets, scrap wood and a thoroughly cleaned out bucket of paint.
However, winter is coming and Robbie has had enough bucket emptying to last him a life time. Emilia says that as we will be using a compost toilet for the rest of our lives, (she loves compost and the environment) we must build a compost toilet that will last FOREVER! Two years of thought has gone into this design, and probably 1,000 KZfaq videos…. We are so excited to see the result, and never have to empty a bucket of poo again.
Join us as we continue to build our off-grid homestead, and become self-sufficient from the land.

Here we are building our dream compost toilet after spending the first year on our homestead going to the toilet in the bushes, with a shovel and a knife, fighting for our place amongst the grunting wild boar. Anyone have any other interesting wilderness toilet experiences? Would you consider switching to a compost toilet for the rest of your life like I’m forcing Robbie to do?

Get into making bio-charcoal! Great for your composting toilet and chicken coop. It helps reduce the smell while absorbing the nutrients in the matter, then you can use as compost on your plants. As your creating the bio-char you can even use the heat and cook things too.

There are channels with videos, then there are a few channels with videos and a few outtakes, and then there is this channel with … only outtakes? 🙃You're a seriously funny family and a breath of fresh air on KZfaq. I enjoy your videos a lot!

@@ladyandtheowlman It seems to work, your videos are never boring! And it gives them a unique style that I haven't seen anywhere on KZfaq. Unique is probably a good thing when on KZfaq, so just keep doing what you're doing and see where it takes you?

I have seen men, over 6'6" bodybuilder types, reduced to shivering, high pitched shrieking like a 3 year old girl and crying and wailing when they encounter a snake unexpectedly. So you have got absolutely nothing to be ashamed of - yes you were shaken BUT you handled yourself pretty damn good under the circumstances - congratulations.

I have been re-cooperating from a new left knee replacement and have enjoyed this journey.Sage is learning skills at his age that will make this journey faster should he ever embark on creating his own Utopia. Just like my only child, I bet he would like a sibling, if only to commiserate with as he grows under your tutelege. Watching your physical efforts is an inspiration.

Hope you’re enjoying your adventures in India. We loved hearing of your travelling around Sri Lanka in a tuk-tuk. Definitely give us a shout when you’re next here and we can show you around! Hi,👋, L&T, O, M, 😂, I think there is a song about that , 😂, thank you for sharing your amazing experience living off the grid, a the land , And erecting your compost toilet, it is a pity you are a little bit too far away, I have two or three pieces sanitary wear bits that you could have for nothing, about seven or eight years ago, I was In a builders merchant back in the UK, ordering some materials, some bits and pieces for job I was doing, I noticed that somebody was taking bathroom, suite et cetera apart, So I made some enquiries with the management, and it appears they were removing five or six of the bathroom Show unit appliances and they were going up for sale, so I asked them how much they wanted for the whole lot ha ha, 😂, they came up with a figure, and I said I’ll take the whole lot, It took me two trips, but I managed to collect everything and bring it across to France, if you have a chance and you see showrooms in building merchants, you want to make them enquiries to see whether they are going to be exchange or replaced it any time as great possibility you will get them for less than half price, Give you an idea , I brought the kitchen made of solid oak, without the appliances was over £18,000, I paid £2000 for it, but I had to wait nearly 3 months for them to dismantle and get it all prepared for me, I did spend another bit of money on some extra work Top as there was not quite enough, as I wanted to build a centre Island in the kitchen with a breakfast bar off the back of it, Sometimes you have to be a little bit cheeky , and you know what being a bit cheeky is like don’t you?, 😂 . There was a couple of scenes in your, video, where I had to reconnect my pacemaker, as you’ve got my heart racing a bit too much ha ha, 😂, cheeky, 😂, I see your chicken coop is a lot safer now , especially with the buzzards and Eagles 🦅 hovering about, Stay safe, keep up the great work , colder weather is now coming in, I’ve had frost nearly every morning this week so far, in the Correze France , I/we look 👀 forward to seeing you all on the next stage of your journey, stay safe, Phil from the moulin France ,

Hey Phil! Good idea about getting discount prices from showrooms, we will ask next time we’re in! Harder to be cheeky with builders merchants when we won’t speak fluent Spanish! But we’re getting better each time, you’ve got to hustle. We add something new to the chicken house next episode to prevent more eagle attacks. Hope you’ve got a good log fire to keep you warm!

@@ladyandtheowlmanHi 👋, good luck with builders merchants, not sure whether they have showrooms over there like they had in the UK, I purchased a very large kitchen from a place called K2 B, that stands for kitchens and bathrooms, the kitchen was on display I think around £18,000, without the appliances, I paid, I think 2 1/2 thousand for it, but then I spent another 2 1/2 thousand pound, purchasing some more granite worktop, and I bet you can’t guess where that came from, Portugal, That came all the way from Portugal up to Newmarket in the UK, it was two sizes I wanted and then I brought it all the way across back to France again, because I had a large business, I used to go quite a lot to different builders merchants, and it was just a case of been at The right place at the right time, and of course the money, so if something came up that I thought I could use, I will get it, I hope all goes well with your chicken coop, And you managed to stop eagles, buzzards, coming down and helping themselves to free range chickens, 🐓, good luck for the future, I just remembered you said about a fire, I’m sitting here at the moment with blankets around me trying to keep warm as I didn’t think it was worth light on the fire around about half 6 o’clock 7 o’clock in the evening, I am sitting here with a nice glass of wine though, Stay safe, keep up the great work, ❤ Phil from the moulin.

There are much better solutions for that. Dig a pit about 5 ft deep 4 x 6 ft concrete the bottom then brick the sides, not forgetting to put your inlet pipe near the top on one side and your outlet pipe 6" below on the opposite side. A steel plate on the top for access incase of blockage. It's called a soak away
@ladyandtheowlman
@ladyandtheowlman 3 ай бұрын
Thanks for comment Robert! This does indeed sound like a simple solution. Robbie tried to make us do this in the beginning, but I told him I wanted to store the compost so we can move it around the land and feed our trees (after a couple of years of fermentation of course,) that’s how we came to the idea of the bin system. Also the toilet is quite near our spring, so we were a bit worried about hazardous things going into the soil!

@@ladyandtheowlman Not the best idea as human waist contains a lot of chemicals and metals from the food we eat, so far better to let it drain away slowly and if you do get blocked then call the council to come and empty it and do not,,, use and bleach or other such things down the loo as it stop the muck from decaying as it kills all the good bacteria. Trust me I have had a soak away on my last 3 farms.

Well Peter.... this is a good idea. Haha. This is at least what sensible people would do. Although we do like the idea of having a safe place from the mosquitos, would you have a moveable structure (water proof house) with your design that you can move to the new toilet location? With our design I guess what sold us was reading the 'humanure handbook' and we liked the idea of storing the compost and using on our trees in future
