⭐️ About this Episode:
To have a Spring like ours is RARE! And when going, finding a Off Grid Water Source can be a challenge. There are many ways to collect water for your daily needs and we considered them all. But when it came down to it we wanted something worry and maintenance free since we will be having guests stay here. So our system is almost identical to what a house with a well would be, except we are using the spring instead of a well. And all this will operate off of our battery bank.

Looks good. The only thing i would have done differently is put a 2 or 3 inch sleeve over the lines in the spring to protect them from the rocks rubbing on them.

Our family farm has been on the same spring that was developed by my Great Grandfather in 1911 in Middle Ga. In our area we have springs litterally everywhere on the farm, but my Great Grandfather traced them all back to a single source at the headwaters of a creek just down from the houses and barns. He built a cistern litterally on top of the fisure in the bedrock where the water comes up. He cast a concrete tank on top of the fisure and sealed it off, beside the cistern he cast in a large concrete tub to place canning jars, butter and milk jugs from the commercial milking operation he had, with it draining off to form the creek. He had a windmill to pump the water up to a large water tank that stood near his house but was about 30 feet higher than the first floor. We still use the same cistern but have a shallow water pump feeding the much newer pipes. We have to clean out the cistern about every 5 years because sand comes up through the fisure and will eventually slow the flow. We feed 2 barns, and 3 houses with it to this day. The windmill and water tank tower still stand but a tornado took down the tank around 99'. I maintain the water tower because it makes one helluva good deer stand being right on the edge of a field currently planted with red clover and we took 7 deer from it last year alone between my sons and I (no, we haven't had to eat ground beef all year and bow season opens tomorrow). Almost forgot, my bible thumping, deeply religious great grandfather had a small shed built off the back of the spring house away from prying eyes with several holes in the wall above the concrete tub. I asked around and all of the women of the family seemed shocked and denied knowing that was attached, but finally got a very old cousin of my grandfather to tell me what it was used for. It seemed my deeply religious, highky respected, pillar of the community, great gransfather had a still back there, for medicinal uses of course. Back in the 20's and 30's where it was said some of the best sour mash whiskey in the county was made. My cousin admitted he helped as a little boy in the 30's with deliveries. My grandmother went to her grave swearing Cousin Will was making that story up. Did I mention I found a copper worm and an old barrel in the attached shed.

Nice work awesome video.I did something similar myself and learned a few things. You may want to replace any fittings that are galvanized to bronze, brass or stainless. Especially if the system is shut down once in a while that will allow the galvanized to rust on the inside and eventually close off your flow. It will make your filter to turn brown prematurely and change the quality of your water. With such a clean source that you have, a beautiful spring. Without a doubt after the galvanized fittings are removed you can drink right from the tap. That would be priceless. 👍

@Roaming Gnome, I also have land in the North Georgia mountains, my property has a perennial spring head with good flow - albeit nothing like the one in this video. Are you able to legally tap the water to use for your dwelling (assuming you have something built)? I was told by my builder that the county where I'm at will not approve the use of a springhead for water to use in my cabin and that I must put in a well, which I think is bs.

No well pump tank pressure switch is care free . Thats why gravity feed would be better. You could even hook up temporary pump very easy if well went out to fill reservoir and you could have a float switch wired to notify you if water level in it was below whatever level you decide and have plenty of time to fix the system. Plus use a very small pump more hours to fill the reservoir so less start up amperage needed Grundfos makes a lot of good soft start and even solar pumps that reduce start amps like the SQ line

One thing I learned from working where there are pumps, always have two filters. One that is online and one that is in standby mode. Reason is, that way you can replace one while still having the system in operation. And have extras of filters and gaskets on hand. When you have a plastic housing for the filter, it isn't a bad idea to have a spare either. I don't see any unions on the lines either which I would have. It only takes one "ah shoot" moment to know why things where you need them 24/7/366 have backups.

I live in the Ozarks, mountain life is nice…even though I'm in more of a City. All the major Springs are owned by major corporations, so you got one is lucky. You are going to need a sign that says no pissing in the drinking water or find a means to try and hide that precious water source being so close to cabin. What about the wast?

I have had that problem with the tub before. If you are using pex then with the tub and shower you need to remove that little plastic piece on the inside of the shark bite that inserts into the center of the pex it causes a weird pressure issue and tries to send water up to the shower.

I have a few questions. 1) Are you putting in a water heater? 2) If so, where will it go? 3) Next to the blue water tank? 4) How will this system do in the winter in regards to freezing? Great Job Too!!! I’m looking forward to see the cabin once it’s complete. Love your videos and stay safe.

yep everyone should probably make crawl space higher especially if pipes and ductwork and wiring under there etc. You would be better off in the long run having gravity feed but costs a lot more. Even though you have a goosd spring I personally wouldn't rent the cabin with that type of water supply unless you make a reservoir around the spring to keep contaminants out and even then you are opening yourself up to a lot of potential liability problems. (animal defecates or urinates in or even on ground uphill from spring head rains and runoff gets into spring and Wha La disease is spread. For me personally I would use it but to rent I wouldn't. The other thing you could do would be to have guests sign a waiver and also sign to only drink bottled water but then washing dishes etc a problem too.

Loftis Party of Six - weROAM A lot of people are going to complain about sanitary seals and other sanitation issues but in reality you don’t actually need most of that. A settling tank, a good filtration system, and a UV sterilizer is all you really need as long as the spring water doesn’t contain any heavy metals or VOC’s. But in all seriousness PLEASE ADD A UV STERILIZER, if cost is a concern I will even buy you one and send it to you.

You don't need to turn a RV pump on and off every time you need water. It works just like any other pump, when it reaches it's preset pressure, it shuts off. The reason they have a handy switch to turn it on and off in RV's is because your not there full time and no one wants to come up to the trailer with a broken pipe and a flooded trailer. If you go away for vacation you shut your system down too. You can keep a RV pump on as long as you want with no trouble just like your system. The big difference with a RV pump is it requires no pressure tank, it pressurizes the water lines and hot water tank only to apx. 50 pounds and then turns on when you open a tap giving you a constant flow, now you could put in a pressure tank if you want but they are high flow pumps so no need to in a RV, besides it would just be another thing to winterize in a trailer. One advantage to a RV pump is that you can run them off of a 12 volt battery system and solar panels which is great for a off grid place or you can buy a 120 volt RV pump if your on shore power all the time. Just saying, you seem to be misinformed as to how they work.

Would you say this is similar to how I would get my water from Rain Caught cistern into the house for functional use?

No.. most who collect rain water will use a 12v pump connected to the tank holding the water.

I understand the desire to save some money but wouldn’t an actual well be a better long term option? The water table obviously isn’t that deep so a well wouldn’t have been hard to install. Very nice cabin, though. I’d love to have something like that!

I install water systems and water treatment for a living, is there a reason you haven't fitted a uv bacterial filter? Here in the UK they are mandatory for drinking water

That is a cool idea, and the funny thing is that I was thinking about this hour ago. I was wondering when the water is passed by the light ..... Question one... How many times dose the water have to be passed by the light to kill bacteria. The reason behind my question.... OK you know how we harvest the rain water in our tanks. With the wet system as of cause, the pipes go under ground .... once a year in the summer the water will go stagnant in only certain sections of the pipes line . In other word ,I'll dump that water in the system completely, but what happens is that I can smell good water then it goes stagnant then water smells good ,and then of course I'll smell stagnant water again until it's gone and then the lavey of mosquito's will be in the final dump so I flush freshwater through the system and dump all of it so then the pipes are clean and dry until next rain ,which I let the first rain go to drain, then I'll harvest the water as it's fresh and clean. Would the ultra violet light clean and purfie the water with one pass or would it take a few passes for purification, so that the water would be alright for let's say cooling tower water for a process so bacteria can't become air born from the fans suckung air through the water if it's stagnant. I'm just trying to use water for another use before dumping it in a soke well like blow down in air con equipment ? Sorry for being technical but just wounded if you may know The answer to my question as you work with uv light purfie like that show in thearter has the same system . That's how I heard about uv purification. Regards Michael .

@@michaelward2869 we fit all uv sterilisers after a particulate filter as particles in the water can create shadows for bacteria to hid behind. The uv is normally fitted after storage/holding tanks to save the water building any bacteria again. In your case maybe a smaller unit could be fitted before the water tower to keep that clean then a second unit after to kill anything that may be in the tank. Water only needs to pass the uv once to kill bacteria as all uv systems are sold with a maximum flow rate that they can work at.

Hey guys you do it your way I have idea. Submersible pump or,certrifical dry water pump . Problem if what ever the reason we say when she suck air ! Not if . When it sucks air . Now we all know anything can happen so bro I'm with you Submersible pump to your tank up higher . Put in pressure pump with ye expansion tank so the pump only pumps when the pressure drops round 65 / 70 psi in the system only then your pressure pump will start . Only use the Submersible when tank uptop is near empty . Whit ball float valve you can do it and even start the Submersible and it'll run until your tank's full and switch off .only one pump will run at a time unless you shower and the float is just about to click you shower then pressure pump will start first and when the system clicks your Submersible will also start. Hey love what your doing you have beautiful family bro . Have a think about it cause that can be done later or wherever . But you need pressure in your home the same as the Scheam water . So your washing machine works properly. So low pressure and it won't fill properly as solinoids fail to run. The computer in mother board reads no water it happend to me crap high pressure pump. Buy a davey pump's as the name is an outstanding company for electric pumps. But it's up to you how you want it . Love your work guys ,and hey remember your hand prints ???? Footing I hope you did that up on the top where you guys can look at those many years from now . That area that you said a sitting area in garden ,to take it all in, yes ! your lake = wild life in your garden duck's and birds to sit and watch maybe little bit of feeding from your hands... it's perfect for you guys .. good luck with the project . I love it to ,wild duck's in my pond in the paddock dead trees witch just set the area off .

thats odd, you have a very shallow spring full of silt and fallen rock, a digger right there, and you didnt have him take out a few extra buckets to dig out a generic 4+ foot deep pool base to help retain far more useable water reserve, and as a side benefit prevent winter freezing there.
