In this series of videos we investigate off road mobility using terramechanics techniques.
Using terramechanics we can look at the factors which affect the off road performance such as soil types, wheel loads, tyre sizes and inflation pressures.
In this first video we set the scene with some basic information on soil properties and tyre characteristics. These will be used in subsequent videos where analyses are performed and results presented.
Warning - contains technical information (but nothing that interested viewers won't be able to follow).

Bill. Fabulous. Takes me back to my civil engineering degree, soil mechanics. This is part of tyre design of course. But nof how people choose their tyre sizes/tread patterns

Thanks for the informative video. One question, the curves plotted buy Wong shown at min 12.23 are telling me that increasing the inflation pressure, it increases the ground pressure, and oppositely deflating the tyre, it reduces the ground pressure. This is supported from the observation of a smaller patch area by increasing tyre pressure. That is, given the same load applied, a smaller area will result in a higher pressure (P=F/A). Basically the reaction of the ground to the pressure imposed from the tyre. However in the video is said that lowering tyre pressure, the contact pressure is greater. Am I missing some key concept? Thanks Giacomo

Your understanding is correct, at least as far as this simple model goes. By this I mean that it works quite wellfor tyres on rigid surfaces, but on soils where there's signficant deformation there's a more complex interaction between the tyre and the soil and the model is less valid. If I said anywhere that lowering the tyre pressure increases the contact pressure it was an error or a misunderstanding. However lowering the tyre pressure reduces the load carried by the pressurised air and increases the load carried by the tyre carcass (and the associated "carcass pressure") although of course the total contact pressure is still lower. I will re-visit this to see if it can be better presented however it won't be for some months because I am tied up on other things at present. Thanks for your comment.

@@defendermodsandtravels thanks for your reply. If that helps I think this happened at min 13.04. It did definitely help to ask as I had missed the tyre carcass increase in support when deflating. Thank you for your work.

Please keep up your technical appraisal videos. The 4x4 world needs to be better educated. The parts suppliers need to raise the quality of their offerings....take note, Britpart, Allmakes, Bearmach. Stop using Chinese suppliers and get UK based production going. I have had so many part failures for my Land Rover straight out of the bix....appalling quality

The problem is that people must be prepared to pay for good quality components. I pay but but there are limits. For example, simple things like hub cap oil seals where the genuine part could be an absurd price and the knock off about one tenth of the price. The temptation is to buy a handful of the copies and still save money even if they fail prematurely. What pisses me off is when you pay top dollar and the product is still rubbish. See my videos on the Foxwing awning, Airlift helper springs and the X-brake disc handbrake. IMO all potentially good products ruined by an absence of engineering design. Another product I am dubious about is the Rolls AGM deep cycle battery I bought recently. A Canadian company charging a lot of money (£250) and when it arrived the battery said "made in China" - the very thing I was paying to avoid. I expect it to fail prematurely. It's a minefield out there.

@@defendermodsandtravels The Chinese have the skills and technology to manufacture to as high a standard as is ordered. Equally they can produce good looking junk. I'm tired of funding Chinese economic, political and military build up. When will the West, wake up and stop this!!

@@defendermodsandtravels I don't believe that British manufacturing can't step up to the mark and produce the items we need for a decent price. I purchased 3, THREE Mass air flow meters supplied by Britpart...about £40. Not one worked. It is a critical item. I have had to convert to the Bosch item at £150 and modify the wiring and fit a new ECU chip. The original fuel inertia cut off switch failed after 26 years. I am on my fourth Britpart/bearmach replacement. All worked for around 3 months, failing open circuit. It is a HOPELESS situation. Cheap but useless.

I have found no other channel like this with data to back up any assertions. I don't have a Land Rover though I can appreciate them, but I find so much helpful with regard to traveling and maintaining my Chevy Silverado. We have the same situation in the United States regarding cheap Chinese parts and goods. When I'm replacing Parts in my truck I have to choose between made in America where I can find them and OEM made in China. It seems like initially we have gained a lot because we could buy so much more reduced cost but it seems like now everything we're fine is just Junk. Granted you don't need everything to last for a hundred years and it's okay for some things to be cheap and break but the problem is that now it seems we've lost quality and durability where it matters. It seems there are so many items like an electric jack that I bought that would have lasted so much longer if they had used Metal Gears instead of plastic. It wasn't less safe but the plastic gears just wore out whereas if they spent amother dollar or two it would have been good quality and lasted for many years.
