This communication exercise was A LOT of fun, and I learned a ton. It took us 12 hours, 3 attempts and 3 iterations through our place plan, but ultimately JS8 saved the day. It was roughly 1500 miles, using the RF-1944 military antenna.
This was attempted from Land Between the Lakes, a part and campground here in Kentucky.
Look out for the AAR later this week where we talked about the behind the scenes, and everything we learned.
If anyone would like a copy of the communication plan, you can find it over at themodernham.com/downloads/
Shout out to Gaston, TheTechPrepper for motivating me to get out there and try this out. If you haven't tried to communicate off grid with a specific individual, now is the time to practice. You will run into issues you would have never though of.

Good morning, Billy. Thank you for collaborating on this one. It was great to hear my audio on your end of the circuit. I'll be sending you a TTP EmComm Linked Dipole next month. It's a great performer, but you can only run 20 watts on digital and 50 watts sideband, but it offers good performance if you don't mind manually disconnecting the links for the bands that you want to work. We have to do this again sometime. P.S. Tell your wife, thank you for letting us borrow you for a half day of your camping trip to get this exercise done.

Thanks for the collaboration! Yeah it's always interesting to hear what you sound like on the other side. I can't wait to get a hold of the linked dipole. I've never used a resonant dipole, so I'm sure it will be a great addition and main field antenna. Maybe we can do this again with a "maintenance phase" to build off the first contact. Either way, I'm sure it would go a lot smoother with that TTP EmComm Linked Dipole. If I said she was used to the shenanigans, that'd be a lie. I'll let her know, thanks again! Look forward to the next one, and I'll be taking a look at those prediction tools too.

I just watched his video. At the end he said it was you he was contacting. I thought "Oh him!" and came here to see your video. Remember, nobody owns a frequency. Those yelling are just mad they only know how to key the mike and yell. Keep up the great work! 73! de KE5ES

While I will agree that the malicious interference was wrong, ham radio has "gentleman's agreements" . These are not law, but just a civilized way of minimizing interference. If you operate outside them, you are a lid. Don't be a lid.

@@mikesmith-po8nd - I can definitely see someone upset because they are attempting a scheduled voice communication in the voice portion of the band and someone else is attempting a scheduled digital communication in the voice portion of the band. It's called a gentleman's agreement because gentlemen agree to abide by it.

Another way to practice sending traffic is through NTS Trivia, sponsored by K8AMH. (Unfortunately, KZfaq does not allow me to post URLs.) With regard to your military antenna, the device appears similar to the Chameleon CHA TD Broadband Dipole. Their instructions offer different configurations for the terminating resistor. Once again, you have shown us something the Big 5 hasn’t. Nice presentation. 73 de Florida

Glad you liked the video. I'll look into NTS Trivia. Yeah I think Chameleon modeled their antenna after it, but maybe their instructions can still be used.

An antenna using resistive loading is wasting RF to lower SWR. That is inefficient. Use a resonant antenna or a tuner. An EFHW for 40 also is a full wave on 20.

He literally said a resonant antenna would be best… Ease and portability is a giant factor for these types of comms…

I am available to conduct testing as at work I set up portable antennas and do similar HF work. I am available evenings to do this 3 days a week. And Indo have a youtube channel.

1) Typically you will have windows for each station to transmit and receive. For example, first 30 seconds of the minute station A transmits and station B receives and in the second 30 seconds it is reversed. Once you make contact you can change that up as necessary. 2) If you are going to use digital, there are some that automatically request a resend of any portion of data that was missed. It's efficient because it only resends the missing parts. 3) Off-topic, but The Land Between the Lakes has a long history of Bigfoot/Dogman sightings. Who knows what that was watching you from the woods. Hihi.
