I hated this episode. I really thought they weren't gonna be following the trash that's going on in the world that is non-sensical and in this episode they did. I was on board with the Police brutality because it does create a more real subject and a good story ark. But the Defund Police and Women cops, that is just the media and Hollywood with their which hunts. Women cops is bogus in 2021. Literally women have made up their oppression in todays world, Only people who attack strong independent women are the same people that preach about how women are oppressed. And Defunding the police is BS the ones asking for it are just doing it to have nobody to stop them from committing crimes. "What if one of us admitted to committing a crime?" then id arrest you myself yo, citizen's arrest right here.

As an outside country perspective, the people push cops hard, so the cops push back just as hard, then complain when they do. Cops are people too, who serve 'the people'. It should be a balance. Here is the Inside the Country perspective (way too late). U.S. citizens trusted U.S. cops implicitly... viewed them as heroes... and then every phone became a camera. And we saw they were beating people... killing people (about 1245 per year -- in UK it's under 20 -- the u.s. police kill that many children)... they were ignoring our constitutional rights. They were *lying* ... regularly ... they spoke of other civilians as trash in a way that implied they were "better" and some kind of super civilian near military class. And then body cameras came out.. And we saw they were selectively enforcing the law aqainst races they didn't like and making stuff up about people they didn't like or who tried to assert their 1st, 4th, and 5th amendment rights. And we saw that they were planting evidence, they were assaulting people, they were breaking the law, and they were escalating situations, killing *innocent* people, and then lying about what happened. And they were often protecting wealthy or politically powerful people. It became clear the U.S. had two laws- one for the bottom 99% and another law for the top 1%. Our trust in them is shattered. Not just back to 2000ish... no-- it was retroactively broken back to our childhoods in the 60s and 80s. We saw they had always been a large gang of thugs, prone to fits of rage, and vindictive. Police officers are legally allowed to *lie* to other people. That means they are *inherently* untrustworthy and they are very risky to be around. If you irritate one, you may be pulled over and get massive ticket, or worse. So folks want to *know* if they are dealing with a potential threat to their freedom, safety, employment, and future. Picture them as a twitchy dog breed that's fine 90% of the time... but the other 10% of the time it may rip your throat out. And understand... I kinda like the police. I understand the hard, corrosive job they do and the need to interact with criminals often. I even donate to their survivor fund foundation occasionally (tho I don't put the stickers on my car-- it feels like paying them off to give me a warning instead of a ticket.) But they need therapy... regular training in the constitution, deescalation, and they should *not* be allowed to stay home with pay when suspended. They should be required to train and get therapy 8 hours a day while suspended from duty.

I've been on the fence for a while, but this scene decided it. I will no longer be watching this show, which is unfortunate as I am a fan of Nathan Fillion, and liked where I thought this show was going. I'm tired of shows about police that are written by, starring, and with the target audience of, people that hate the police. If you think off duty police aren't in danger of being targeted, and don't have a legitimate reason to keep their profession private, you have not been paying attention. But more importantly, NOBODY is entitled to know anything about anyone. The details of your private life, outside of your class, or your job, or whatever, are just that, private. This is of course excluding people that need things like security clearances, but you get the point. "Hi, my name is Nathan. I'm here to learn, just like you. I like pancakes and long walks on the beach." That's it. Before I trigger anyone, I am acutely aware that there is a huge systemic issue that needs to be addressed. But it can be done without complete bullshit like an ethics teacher telling someone they're responsible for someone else's past, or pretending that the percentage of police officers killed didn't surge nearly 30% last year, and it can certainly be done without creating a one dimensional stereotypical asshole. Seriously, officer jackass had zero depth beyond racist angry coward.

Listen to her words again, she didn't say he was at fault. However, he wants to effect change and that means challenging the status quo. Any time someone wants to change something they must challenge the current state, which means understanding and finding solutions for problems of today that were caused by actions of others in the past; in other words, take some level of responsibility. Will Smith actually described this concept rather well: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/i7mjpM6VkqudkZs.html Also, as for the issue of shows addressing issues of law enforcement, until a conflict (real or perceived) is expressed there can be no conflict management or resolution. My perception is that this show is expressing the issues perceived by society and presenting solutions, and in doing so helping to alter the expectations of law enforcement from itself and the citizenry.

I don’t understand at all some of the frustration I see in comments anywhere about this show. The Rookie is one of the few police dramas actually attempting to answer some of these questions with grace and awareness, including awareness of how complicated these answers are for people working in the field. That isn’t about assuming the worst of all cops, but about really thinking about the issues that complicate the work for cops and civilians both. Those questions aren’t going away-communities are still going to need to ask and answer them, because the truth is that when the state gives you the privilege of walking the street with a firearm they paid for, you are called to a higher standard than your neighbours. That doesn’t mean that communities have no responsibility-our responsibility is enshrined in law, and that is part of the reason we have police at all. What’s at stake, though, is whether that breakdown of responsibility from public servants who already are in hostile circumstances regularly runs the risk of making relations between the community more volatile. Even if ‘defunding the police’ wasn’t a popular talking point right now, communities would feel far more in sync with their law enforcement professionals with just a few small considerations: prioritizing deescalation and assuming less hostility from scenes, reevaluating and being transparent about bias, offering more opportunities for public rehabilitation and community redress that work in tandem with patrols rather than trying to race each other. Those are things we can do-and people ask about and discuss doing-right now to strengthen connections and make small justice-related progress. I also find it alarming how many times I’ve seen it framed in comments like one right here several weeks ago that asking some of these questions-as simple as how cops gain trust in microcommunities like the classroom-is the same as arguing in favour of criminals. Are the kids of colour in that classroom criminals, then? Are their concerns less valid as people or characters for some reason? The questions we ask about the justice system are valuable for cops as well, to be sure, but there are in fact another group of people outside of that Venn diagram: ordinary citizens who want to feel safe in their communities in general. That safety is ensured by more things, and more complex things, than simply whether someone would be willing to get in a gunfight on my behalf. What is there to ensure that the gunfight never happens on either side? Or that people’s fears of being considered a criminal for simply being on the other side of the badge won’t be allayed in the field? These questions make the space safer for everyone, cops included, and I’m grateful that more shows are attempting in their own ways to ask them even if they don’t have answers. I think The Rookie is doing one of the best jobs in that regard, too, and while it isn’t the best it can be all the time, I applaud the team for trying while still keeping its humour.

@therisingtithes
@therisingtithes 3 жыл бұрын
@@BlackStar-uh5xv Framing it in that way implies the professor's argument was that Nolan was to blame for the actions of other officers, which isn't true and isn't what she implied. 'A higher level of responsibility' is simply an acknowledgment that he has powers and privileges that need to be accepted transparently so as to distance one from those who would wield it poorly; I would personally expect similar from people in positions that are less volatile if harm was done by members of their institution, and that doesn't pass blame to those other members. Also, Nolan asked for her perspective, and she gave it not as a professor but as a citizen. As for 'those names', I would think it fair for citizens--the people who can be aimed at--to consider those circumstances from their own available points of view because those are the points of view that they have. Being a police officer is indeed a very high-risk occupation, but it is so for everyone involved. I would expect no less than accountability for the use of force even if a police officer is in a legitimately threatening circumstance. Suffice it to say that if we can fall back on the assumption that any split second can be deadly and can only be responded to with force instead of de-escalation, we run the risk to inculcate an attitude of paranoia, not vigilance, and that can be a risk to police officers' safety as well. It is not a big ask through that lens to expect officers to be introspective about the decisions under which they draw their firearms, if at least for the safety of themselves and their fellow officers.

@@therisingtithes yes but if you reach for a cops gun you will logically get shot, and they just say he was a victim
@therisingtithes
@therisingtithes 3 жыл бұрын
 @Black Star Just because that is a possible option doesn't make it the only one or an ideal one, and either party that did get hurt would be considered a victim because they got shot. The question being assumed here is whether they deserved it, and I would disagree for all kinds of reasons, many of which we couldn't confirm until afterward: that the other party were a child, mentally ill or delirious, for instance. It isn't disadvantageous to assume that cops should be capable of diffusing a situation in more ways than violence, and it is worth noting how many times civilians have witnessed people of colour being responded to with violence more often than other persons in the same situations; even and especially in moments when the other party was deliberately acting as a threat, cops have shown that they are trained to and can deescalate violent situations without resorting to violence in (most but fairly not all) instances where the other party was white. It's also worth noting that this conversation is being had in a show where police officers are still the protagonists. The goal isn't to imply that they are all untrustworthy or brutal, especially not in the same episode where a police officer who has just been assaulted on the job days ago chose to return to duty and helped apprehend a mentally ill man who assaulted a child without firing his weapon; or in the episode after Nolan himself went out of his way to make himself available to other locals who don't trust the police just to regain their trust in the system and affect real change, only to similarly be faced with challenges about how to do so on that community's terms without further alienating or jeopardizing them. These questions are about how we collectively create a space where police officers and citizens reform trust in each other. It would be strange to imply the alternative: that the show about rookie cops working to be promoted to officers is all of a sudden actually about destroying or undermining the work they do, all the while showing them to be capable, competent, and perfectly willing to confront the questions that make their job difficult without complaint.

Ethics is extremely subjective, so saying, "No ethics professor would ever" is foolish. Speaking in absolutes regarding nearly anything related to humans is foolish. That said, she wasn't saying he is responsible, but if he wants change then he will have to deal with and counter the distrust built up by the actions of others.

I loved and binged the first 2 seasons of this show but quit and deleted from my Hulu watch list after this one and the other episodes this season. I'm over the cop bashing, criminals are the real victims narrative. Even polls taken in places like Chicago show an overwhelming majority want more cops but if you want to keep pushing woke children's fantasy narratives that are harmful to society and contrary to most reality and common sense... good luck!

i liked it , one that i disliked was when the racist cop was shown as racist(later on it was pretty good storyline ) , they made it so bad that i wanted the racist cop to shoot the victims family , they were somehow made so unlikable for the couple seconds they were on screen, the whole episode was just crying how hard is being black
