I remember a revealing moment in that brilliant insightful Gabriel Clarke doc in which Keane and Viera picked their best Man U and Arsenal teams respectively. It was when Keane revealed that what pushed him was FEAR, not as in scaring the opposition but within himself, the fear of losing is what drove him, whereas Viera had a different outlook, the joy of winning.

Saipan was 19 years ago now. People seem to think this is a defining moment in roys career. The trophies he won at united was the defining moments in his career. He simply stood up for what was right in Saipan. Hes a leader. Leaders have such high standards and they aim to try get players as close to there level as possible. Instead of dragging up saipan give the man credit for what he achieved in both ireland and united shirts. From a Lfc fan

Utter nonsense . Keane was a pisshead at the time , didn’t want to be there for a long time . He didn’t like not getting the fancy seats on the plane going to Japan and made to wear a tracksuit and be stuck with journalists (fair complaint ) He was right to whinge about Saipan IF it was the plan that they would train there. It wasn’t the plan. The plan was to get them together for rest and relaxation and a few pints after a long club season. England did the same as did many national teams . He broke to code by running to the press . Mick had a right to call him out but he should have done it privately and not before the team. Keane couldn’t tolerate Mick or be held to account Keane behaved precisely the same way in a Portugal during a pre season with United . Found any reason to kick off- there it was the accommodation given to him . Fergie had enough at this point and waited to get rid of them . He was content to go back to the FAI when he became assistant manager and caused trouble there

The man was an embarrassment and knows nothing about football. Telling people Ronaldo would not make it in the game. It became comedy gold only after a while the laughs wore off. After Ronaldo won several trophies Eamon no longer wanted to mention his name because of his embarrassment. When Ronaldo came on for post match interviews. Eamon just did not want to be there anymore and could see Ronaldo's success effected him badly.

He made these comments repeatedly while Ronaldo was scoring goals week after week and it became awkward for eamon to provide any further comments that he began laughing at himself as bill would ask him how he thought ronaldo performed and about his comments for not recognising how talented he was as everyone else could clearly see from his first game. Being a Leeds supporting Yorkshireman that's visited Ireland a couple of times' (but not yet Cork) maybe I see a number of comparisons between Keane/Ireland and it's people's perception of them and Cork with the people of Yorkshire and it's cricketing complex characters of the past.

The Rebel County!
@SavoPaddy
@SavoPaddy 2 жыл бұрын
Just living in Cork, from Mayo. I'd say there is certainly no negative perception of Cork people from people outside of Cork. I think people outside of Cork (specifically the rest of Ireland not including Dublin, will get to Dublin in a minute) think a lot of driven people seem to come from there, and there's just more confidence in Cork people, relative to rest of country outside of Dublin, and maybe more of a tendency towards the extreme end in some, than the average Irish person too, living up to the rebel county etc. Personally found Cork people to be very friendly, welcoming, with a lot of go. I think this perception, if there is one, comes from the Dublin-Cork thing, Cork being the 'real capital', and Dublin tending to look down at the rest of the country, including Cork, as Not-Dublin, and the rest of the country tending to look as Dublin as overly corporate, dismissive of or indifferent to the rest of the country, unfriendly to outsiders, impersonal, feeling more like a large European city, and large parts of it feeling un-Irish in some ways. Massive generalisations of course, but those are the general perceptions (not necessarily the facts!). The superiority complex thing gets bandied about a lot, I'm not so sure I've seen that, definitely seen it more in Dublin (in a nasty kind of way) and Kerry (in a much nicer way) people than in Cork people to be honest! Sometimes there is a real sense of wanting to prove yourself, and to do well to spite maybe, more the underdog, more we'll show the f**cking dubs etc kind of thing, sometimes a chip on the shoulder, but I have not seen an abnormal amount of arrogance or or a superiority complex. More, "best of luck but we're going to win". For me that is more self belief and I've seen no evidence of more/less arrogance than rest of the country (Dublin being the exception)

Before there is universal acceptance that Roy Keane was a great player, people ought to think about what might have happened if he had been paid back in kind in return for 'making his presence felt' early on in a match. Underneath, the man was a thug on the football field.

You have never listened to his podcast then. He calls himself a west Brit for a start! He has billy Hutchinson on regularly and never once pushed back on him. 95% of the time he fully agrees with him and sometimes even goes further than billy beyond partisan lines. He has Eamon McCann on who is the closest thing to the opposing point of view. McCann who is no republican has to regularly remind Dunphy what the British army and loyalists were up to. Worst of all he has a podcast which is mainstream long form news in Ireland poo poos the idea or mere mention of a united Ireland at every opportunity. I’m no troll I’m just telling you how it is.

Completely different sport as everyone well knows. To try make a comparison when he was clearly highlighting the clear corruption in a completely diffferent sport altogether to what you're comparing to would be like comparing apples with oranges. Keane stands by his decision so it would be a bit much to say he should go somewhere and play in conditions that were unprofessional and inadequate to the standards he was accustomed to would be very unfair He really opened everyone eyes to the corruption that was going on for years in a completely different sport.

If you look at Roys career he prepared beyond the limits and when he hit the pitch he gave 120% and expected the same from all around him & im not a major Roy fan. I dont believe he intended leaving, the row blew up to the point he couldnt stay in Saipan & I do see your dissappointment with the outcome.

@@murchuan8782 its all outlined in keanos biography a year before the attack haarland had told roy to get up when roy was rolling around on the floor. Roy as sociopaths do fumed and wallowed in anger about this for a year until they next time the met. Then rather that get into a confrontation in which haarland could respond, keano waited until he was most vulnerable and was unable to defend himself he then stamped his full force down on a outstretched leg and the incident might well have crippled him for life. But apparently that’s what hard men who practice contact sports are allowed to do cowardly leg breaking tackles well that’s what you may consider acceptable but most moral humans wouldn’t.

Keane was lucky in Saipan for what he said to Mick McCarthy. The personal insults. Keane is a loud mouth Mick is from a coal mining back ground and is a real hard man. Had it come to blows Keane would have been left in intensive care in Saipan Hospital.
