Legend of a man. Thanks for all you did for Irish football Mick and for many of the best days of my life. The legacy is not Saipan. The legacy is Yugoslavia, Croatia and Holland at Lansdowne Road. The legacy is Amsterdam, Lisbon, Tehran, Yokohama and Suwon. The legacy is the best quality of football Ireland ever played. The legacy is the best manager Ireland ever had.

I think Mick was great, but Charlton -with his 3 qualifications - was the best manager ROI ever had IMHO.
@davidgbuckley53065 жыл бұрын
Yep, it's a tough call alright. Jack has his three qualifications and WC quarter final. I'd personally give Mick the nod considering Charlton had a much stronger and experienced team, had the 'luxury' of qualifying directly from group with a second placed finish (Mick finished 2nd three times but only qualified once) and quite importantly the style of football under Mick was far superior. Love Jack too though!
@leeturton92542 жыл бұрын
Jack Charlton fit Ireland like a hand in glove...his team's were so awkward to play against.. actually quite clever in how he utilised his players...because Ireland wasn't teeming with quality but he got every ounce out of them and created a team spirit that was second to none

Mick McCarthy; top man, top leader of Ireland as both a player/captain and manager. Has proven to be a really great manager since then (2002) as well. I was hoping that Saipan wouldn't be mentioned in this interview (as it has been discussed ad nauseam) but I suppose it had to be brought up...
@wonjubhoy5 жыл бұрын
I agree James. Mick was always loyal to Ireland. He missed his brother's wedding as a player to play. He managed Ireland out in Cyprus while his father was on his death bed. Personally I supported him against Roy Keane. To me McCarthy played it with a straight bat while Keane is a serial flip flopper.

I think Mick did a great job with Ireland and enjoyed watching Ireland as much as England in those days but Roy Keane was immense for Ireland and always ran his heart out for them, would be nice if Mick actually showed some sort of humility and acknowledge what Roy did for that team and admit that both parties were to blame and regret it instead of refusing to talk about it, which suggests he made a bad call trying to humiliate his best player the night before you fly to the biggest tournament in the world. I like Mick and Roy, strong characters.

Roy Keane was Irelands best player and Captain. He reports for international duty to prepare for a World Cup, has his loyalty and integrity questioned by McCarthy for missing one game of 14 qualifiers the night before flying out to Saipan in front of the Squad and staff, arrives in Saipan to be informed that the training pitch is bobbly, unwatered, rock hard and a risk of injury, to find out there's no training kit, footballs or medical equipment and expresses his disappointment with the disorganisation of the FAI and the management team for failing to ensure that the squad has adequate training and medical facilities for international level players preparing for a World Cup tournament and then is crucified by McCarthy and abandoned by the teammates he was fighting for the whole time. Roy Keane is a man of principles that will not accept lame excuses for substandard facilities, no football's, no training kit and accusations of disloyalty or feining injuries to avoid playing for his Country. Roy stuck to his guns and moral compass and told Mick McCarthy exactly how he felt about the ridiculous organisation of the facilities and equipment and was sent home for speaking out the truth.
@Mani26031981 Жыл бұрын
Man of principle? Please. Roy Keane engineered his own departure from the World Cup. Mick McCarthy only asked him why he pulled out of the Tehran trip after assuring him that he would play. He NEVER accused him of faking an injury. HE flip-flopped about leaving the camp, HE told McCarthy to tell the press it was due to 'personal problems', HE undermined the manager and the squad with those two stupid interviews, and HE abused his manager in the most vile way possible. In short, HE DESERVED to be sent home.
@conorl1894 Жыл бұрын
Keane was really badly man managed by McCarthy. He would’ve well known his standards, character and should’ve had an idea what made him tick, yet his inexperience and weaknesses at the top level were brutally highlighted in his handling of Saipan and that qualifying campaign (and also denis irwins retirement). He seems a nice guy and as a player he’s a legend for his heart on the pitch but as a manager he’s the Irish moyes in a lot of ways (though I have to give him credit for getting them playing football after the dinosaur tactics of Charlton)
@Mani26031981 Жыл бұрын
@@conorl1894 sorry mate, but I disagree with that. McCarthy made Keane his captain ahead of other more senior players because he believed in the Corkman’s ability and leadership profile. Bear in mind that he became permanent captain around about the same time as he became captain of Manchester United. Keane on the other hand never truly respected or liked McCarthy with their spat going all the way back to their post-season US tour in 1992. When you are offered the responsibility of captaining your side, there is an unwritten contract that you pull your weight by being more openly communicative and respectful of your manager. Keane was found wanting on those counts and was never truly willing to respect his role the way he did at Manchester United. In contrast McCarthy did his best to manage him well for five years, allowing him the privileges of coming later and leaving earlier than everyone else for international games. And while what happened in Saipan was unfortunate and McCarthy deserves some blame for that, Keane knew that it was just meant to be a period of rest and acclimatisation with the REAL training taking place in Japan where the facilities were top-notch. So he should definitely have kept his cool and certainly not disobeyed his manager by speaking to the press. And for him to implicitly criticise his teammates and manager in those interviews was utter sacrilege from a captain; he effectively attempted to undermine the harmony of the team in the process. So Mick was right to send him home and Keane showed that he wasn’t worthy of the honour of captaining his country.

How ever was wrong or right Roy left his country down by leaving as a proud irish man nothing would have stopped me from playing from my country.
@stephengallagher22098 күн бұрын
Joe there always failed to ask Roy about the facts. Mick said he had faked injury. Roy pretended that were untrue. Facts are, he went back to Manchester and played 3 full matches within one week on his 'injured knee'.
