Recently the OG Murder Nova underwent a complete revamp with a brand new chassis by DMC Racing as Shawn Ellington returns to the streets of Oklahoma on Discovery Channel’s Street Outlaws series. The car sits lower and features a stiffer double frame-rail tube chassis along with a revamped four-link and rear housing as it attempts to transfer the raw power from the big-block Chevy powerplant. Also new for 2022 is a ProCharger F-3R-140 supercharger and the team decided it was best to run the new combination on FuelTech USA’s hub dyno before embarking on his quest to climb on top of “The List.”
Ellington explained how the turbo combination makes 1,000 more horsepower with the same engine package but still expects the ProCharger to be better for street racing. The turbo setup provides a stronger top-end charge whereas the ProCharger comes on much earlier in the run, enabling the car to run quicker. “The best chance to going fast is early, on the street,” he commented.
The Murder Nova’s supercharged engine cranks out 2,350 WHP on the Mainline Hub Dyno and he continues to rely on a FuelTech FT600 engine management system. The PowerFT ECU can handle any situation that Ellington faces whether it is the limited traction on the streets with the OG Murder Nova or the high-pressure No Prep Kings drag race competition with his similar looking twin-turbocharged Nova. The FT600 and its companion ECUs-FT550, FT550LITE, and FT450-offer a complete line-up of standard features including sequential injection and ignition, O2 Closed Loop, data logger, delay box, Boost Controller, Nitrous Controller, and so much more. FuelTech’s extensive list of features has helped change the game in the aftermarket ECU market, as proven by the success in various motorsports with championships and record-breaking performances.
Big power requires a formidable ignition system and Ellington relies on an FTSPARK-8 that is paired with a set of CDI Racing Ignition coils. Some users run the groundbreaking Gen I system and it is a highly capable ignition system, but FuelTech replaced it nearly two years ago with the FTSPARK-8 Gen II. The Gen II box offers a minimum and guaranteed 750mj of energy at 140 amps and has been tested up to 850mj in certain applications. FuelTech tests every unit prior to boxing to ensure each one meets the 750mj minimum guarantee. That works out to a 25 percent increase in mj output over the FTSPARK Gen I and a 12.5 percent increase of amps at the primary coil. All Gen I ignition boxes are upgradable to Gen II and it utilizes the same enclosure, making the swap easy and quick.
An EGT-8 CAN is used on OG Murder Nova to expand the input capacity of the FT600 and enable the use of eight thermo-coupler temperature sensors like EGT, oil or water temperature, and CHT. The EGT-8 CAN is compatible with any FT-series engine management system, including the older FT500 and FT500-LITE. For those who require the ultimate in expansion, FuelTech offers its Input Expander that connects using CAN communication. It allows for up to 24 additional inputs, including 20 analog inputs and 4 VR sensors.
The OG Murder Nova will be a regular on two Discovery Channel shows in 2022 with Street Outlaws: America’s List and the original Street Outlaws, so getting it sorted at FuelTech prior to filming is paramount to success. I used to race RC and my electric buggy had way more power than the nitro but its all in the chassis, tires and ramping in the power slowly 🇺🇲

I know they use the OG as the street car but I feel like if they changed the camshaft, the converter, the gear set in the trans along with putting a duel set of external dump valves on the trans, the rear gear, and put an extra set of 320 gph fuel injectors and change the front struts and rear coilovers so he can have more weight transfer and more front end travel and also put a Davies Technologies VPS in the car as well for traction and wheelie control and it also gives you a very accurate time slip to go off of and the changes I mentioned he should make to the engine should give him more HP and the other changes should give him better handling and grip on the streets and with the converter that should definitely help him with getting the car out past the 60ft mark before the Procharger really starts to crank out the power especially with a 1.48 gear set in the trans then the car can really begin to work especially if he shuts one dump valve at a time and it should all come together and start giving him more wins and for the NPK car I hope he stays with a small block and if he changes anything I would go up to the 4.6 bore space SBC from the 4.5 bore space SBC and he should get the Vizner performance and designs built 4.6 bore space SBC and if he ends up changing the combo in the OG I would go with a 5in bore space 632cid BBC I've seen them make well over 3,000hp through the F3R-136 Procharger so it's not even the biggest one and if you run either the 136 or the 140 the big boy it would make the BBC run with the 481x and the Hemi's and another engine that I would go with is a Semi Hemi and that is basically like the 481x but instead of a Hemi block and the BBC heads the Semi Hemi is a BBC bottom end and Hemi heads but really nowadays any engine that is built by a big name engine builder and is an all billet aluminum engine you have the potential to make a boat load of HP no matter what it is

*That was so will explained.* They are 100 percent correct, most people don’t understand a few things like just how important the launch actually is. If you make 500hp or 5,000hp it doesn’t matter one bit if you can’t get that to the ground. All the money I’ve spent on engine parts, engine management, light weight components, whatever nothing made as big of a difference as my rear clip and suspension. I don’t think the advantage people understand that. Now 98% watching this video get it because gearheads. Now I happen to love turbos BUT I also run 1/4 mile and mostly track. So I have more room and more traction. If I was running 1/8 mile No prep, we’ll them Procharged Hemi it is. Lol GREAT VIDEO 🇺🇸💪🏼

It's crazy that after all these years he's circled back to this combo. This is pretty much exactly what he was sporting when S.O. started. Obviously he had nitrous before that as everyone did, but I mean back in 2011-12 when the show dropped and him and Doc were always going at it for the crown. That's technology...

so prepped track and possibly NPK type track (with the new weights) a turbo can run, but street it's hard to beat the SC combo. The zoomies also provide a downforce benefit, so possible traction advantage

the down force gain only works on top fuel cars due to it being rear engine and only matters on the launch, it has no benefit in a front engine setup. this is why people need to stop regurgitating things they don't understand just because they saw it mentioned once in a video.

Burst panel. When the engine gets sick and throws up all the pressurized air and fuel it drinks, it comes out of the replaceable burst panel instead of sending the top of the intake manifold through the hood.

IMO its a deal thing..procharger gives all those guys blowers so they swap...cause ive never seen any people who no prep regional/ class racing (in the south) swap from a turbo to a blower..all of the fast cars are turbo...cause those prochargers are so sensitive and its noted that if they are overspun they will destroy the transmissions.

I doubt anyones getting anything for free, But dealer price definitely. The rules changed and made the turbo cars minimum weight was +200 pounds than a procharger car.

You must not know to much about prochargers or no prep Kings they get a huge weight break normally but this year the weight break is going to the turbo guys because so many ProCharger guys are in the lead the last few years and that's because turbo cars can't 60 ft or front half like them at all and if they can't make it up on the back half in time there's no point in having turbos if you're not competitive.. with the rule change this year turbos is going to be the way to go but they found out so late the pro charger guys don't have time to switch so it will be interesting to see if they can get it figured out also you have a better chance of over spinning a pro charger if you don't know what you're doing but they do they just have to push it to the absolute limits sometimes if they want to compete or have a chance at winning

In my opinion you guys are putting too much emphasis on the engines power....Id be looking into going with a Rossler 6 speed 400 to get the 60ft below 1 second without blazing the tires........A factor between turbo and PC is when you take your foot off the accelerator with turbo power youre relying on a wastegate to pop the pressure but let me ask you something....Have you ever tried pedaling a bike with swapped sprockets?....Its alot harder than the right way and thats the kind of stresses you put on a ProCharger when you take your foot off the gas and the reason why Shafts snap so easily....Its not the spool-up that does it even though its the factor that finishes them off as it takes more stresses to slow the Procharger impeller down.........Ryan Martins been pretty lucky or he knows how to keep his ProChargers performing spectacular and maybe thats something you should take note of as in the past broken shafts were something you wrestled with............

Wanna hear something funny Justin Swanstrom had his car dyno’d at fuel tech he made peak power at 7500rpm with his 540Cid centrifugal supercharged proline but big country in his Infinite knowledge sets his kids shift point at 10,000rpm his rev limiter is set to 10,800 his shift point should be 7500rpm and his rev limiter should be at around 8500rpm that’s why the kids always tearing up pro chargers and I hope you know if you strip the input shaft on your pro-charger take it to a machine shop and get it fixed don’t sign it and sell it lol

I have a half-wish that someone does an electric street car and breaks into the list with it. If the name of the game is leaving early and torque down low, you can't beat instant battery power to a motor. Not sure how possible all that is as an armchair drag race fan, modular batteries to shift the weight around as needed, no more spooling or bumping in, no more boost to worry about, maybe a more simple tuning process (ramp curve and throttle position), etc.

I do wonder if there's some sort of hybrid system that could be done. So you get the instant torque launch speed from the electric motor but then a nitrous or turbo boosted gas motor kicks in after the 60ft. To push the top end. It's the battery weight and lack of top speed that ruins an all-electric drag car.
