This was definitely a fun, adventure movie with a lot of silly moments, and even some freaky ones too! I truly understand why so many people enjoy this movie; it's straightforward, and again, it's just a fun time with no serious thinking skills needed, hooray! I hope you enjoy this reaction like I enjoyed the movie!

Omid Djalili (the prison boss who first gets eaten by a scarab beatle) told a funny story about the impact this movie had on his career as he's mainly a stand up comic in Britain. After The Mummy he was filming in Morocco I think with Robert Redford and Brad Pitt and when they wrapped a scene they all walked through a local market and The Mummy was playing on Moroccan TV at the time so everyone in the market ignored Robert Redford and Brad Pitt and were shouting "Hey look! It's the guy from The Mummy! and were clamouring for his autograph while probably 2 of the most recognisable actors in the world just walked away 😂

That "wrong side of the river" gag is unusually highbrow and esoteric for a movie like this, so to explain: the Nile is the largest river in the world, and there are NO bridges across it. At that point, the Americans' only option is to find a ferry to take them across, taking them far out of their way, and costing a ton thanks to all those horses. It's actually quite impressive they mange to arrive at the same time as the heroes.

Thing about camels, they're not necessarily faster, but they do tend to travel better in sand and deserts than horses do. So while a horse can sprint faster, camels are better at conserving stamina.

I know Indiana Jones is probably a technically better film, but I just enjoy this and the sequel so much more, partly from the chemistry between Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz, and I think the slightly more slapstick humour just works a bit better with this story for me

This movie knows it's pure popcorn fun and revels in it, like a live action DuckTales. I do love that Evelyn is a capable damsel, as though she isn't a fighter her other skills make her the most useful member of the party. Other favorite bits are Beni trying to pray to every major religion for help, Brendan Fraser saying "Look what I got" and holding up a pissed cat, and Winston dying with a smile on his face because he got to die like his comrades in the great war.

Evie is such an underrated heroine! She's the one who drives the story forward every step of the way (both waking the mummy and figuring out how to destroy it) while Rick self-admittedly is along just to help her out (which is a rare thing to see in a hero as well). Even her relationship with Jonathan is so sweet and respectful. And I love how they allowed her to be an effective heroine without turning her into Action Woman. It's both uplifting and sad that this movie still feels so refreshing after 20 years.

Stephen Sommers was very conscious while making the film that he would need to maintain a very tricky balance between the funny and scary stuff to prevent either from overwhelming the other. How much he succeeded is certainly debatable, but he did put a real effort in. Most notably, if it seems odd that Imhotep mistakes Evy for Anck-su-namun, that's because it's the remnant of a running gag where taking Burns' eyes causes him to also have poor vision, which Sommers ended up deciding would be too much comedy for the character.

The mummy is a perfect example of what the adventure genre can and should be, with it being very well balanced...and with a female lead arugably smarter then everyone else and characters that would often being deemed as useless side characters (Ardeth/Jonathan) that are equally involved and important. And it doesn't take itself overly serious, which is so necessary for the genre and balance of the film. Honestly, I could write a whole essay on how strong this film truly is. I added an adventure unit for my film class simply so I can force high schoolers to watch this movie (and if I have to watch the movie every time I teach it, I just pick something I want to watch myself).

This movie is part of quite a history that spans almost the length of movie making itself. Long before the likes of the Marvel movies these days, the concept of a cinematic universe was first pioneered by Universal Studios in the '30s and '40s, with adaptations of several classic horror novels like Dracula, Frankenstein, and the Phantom of the Opera, plus some original monster stories like The Wolf Man, The Creature from the Black Lagoon, and their first attempt at such, The Mummy in 1932, played by Boris Karloff. Eventually they started having these characters do crossovers with each other, which unfortunately quickly saw a quality nosedive as became clear the reason for the crossovers was that they were just plain out of ideas. Next, there came Hammer Studios, who became especially well known for their remakes of the Universal monsters which features a level of blood and gore beyond anything else seen at the time. Their version of the Mummy first appeared in 1959, played by our old pal Christopher Lee in between his also playing Dracula for the studio. This particular film spent over a decade in development hell, with various production teams coming and going and none able to get it off the ground until Stephen Sommers came along with his idea to combine the classic Mummy story with an Indiana Jones-style old timey pulp adventure hero, and it was a massive success, enough to get a slightly inferior but still quite enjoyable sequel which featured The Rock in his first film role. Unfortunately, the franchise was then killed again by the third film in the series, Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, whose script was so bad that Rachel Weisz refused to come back and was awkwardly replaced by Maria Bello, despite the chemistry between her and Fraser being one of the biggest draws of the first two films. The most recent chapter gets even worse, as after the smash success of the MCU, Universal Studios got the idea that they should resurrect all the classic monster films, building off their status as the OG cinematic universe, in what they eventually named the Dark Universe. And that could have been a great idea. Unfortunately, their first attempt at starting it off with a film called Dracula Unchained was hated by everyone and flopped hard, so they tried to start over with another Mummy film in 2017 starring Tom Cruise. And that film also turned out horrible, causing them to give up on the idea entirely and leaving the Dark Universe as a cautionary tale of what can happen when you try to build a shared film universe too quickly before anyone is on board with it yet.
@ralphroshia9247
@ralphroshia9247 2 жыл бұрын
Dont agree that later films took a nosedive because there classics like Frankenstein meets the Wolfman House of Frankenstein the black castle and the creature from the black lagoon and the reason they started the crossover wasn't because they ran out of ideas it was because of the real life event WW2 and they wanted to give the people what's known as Escapism which is away to take your mind of the War the best way they thought was give us more monsters for there buck

SO MUCH BETTER THAN THE TOM CRUISE 2017 REBOOT, WHICH IS GOD AWFUL! The best Mummy movie ever! Wes Craven, John Carpenter, John Landis, Mick Garris, Clive Barker, Tobe Hooper, and George Romero were considered for the job of making the movie before Stephen Sommers was chosen after his last film, DEEP RISING bombed at the box office. Sommers and Brendan Fraser said that it's not only inspired by the original 1932 Mummy, but called it "Indiana Jones Meets Jason And The Argonauts or Clash Of The Titans meets The Ten Commandments." Kurt Russell, Sylvester Stallone, Matthew McConaughey, Brad Pitt, Ben Affleck Tom Cruise, and Matt Damon were considered for the role of the hero. It was a box office success making $420 million dollars against a $75 million dollar budget.

For a humorous detailing of camel riding, here is Peter O'Toole, in old age, giving a very funny rundown on the filming of the epic "Lawrence of Arabia", which was done in the desert, and which featured an extended race of horses and camels to the city of Aqaba. The part about the movie itself starts at about 20:30, and the camel description at about 21:40 - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/erOcktGh39zXiok.html I just love Evie's priorities, how she can take the time in the middle of a crisis for a little gloat, and to correct Beni's translation. Evie is fun. Winston was played by the delightful Bernard Fox, who, to people my age, was immortalized as Dr. Bombay in the tv show "Bewitched". The animated mummy warriors are, I believe, a tribute to the masterpiece of stop motion animation by Ray Harryhausen in "Jason and the Argonauts", where he animated a small army of warrior skeletons. In stop motion.

Just finished watching and I just LOL'd at your jump scares! 😂😂 I knew you'd enjoy this as it is a fun period- action/ adventure with a bit of attraction tossed in. Like with Raiders of the Lost Ark, it's styled after the old vintage serials of the 40's as well as the original Mummy film to an extent. It always cracked me up some in having watched the old B&W one a few times years ago, as it's nearly a miracle that anyone gets killed by a Mummy because he does walk slow lol. And why no thought to just light him up with some fire to begin with, lol I don't know!😝😄 Anyways, really enjoyed your reactions to this one. Take care Sam.🌻😊

Am I the only one who was more annoyed with O'Connell's ''friend'', Bennie, than with Imhotep?? Imhotep's actions were totally justified, and he was doing a great job as far as technical aspects are concerned. The other little weasel, on the other hand, only got off lucky cause he lied and bullcrapped his way out of being killed on the spot. 😂😂

Hey Sam - I'm glad you enjoyed The Mummy - it's a great one. I can't remember if I mentioned these ones yet - but I would LOVE for you to react to Big Business (Bette Midler), The Money Pitt (Tom Hanks), and Cool Runnings (John Candy). These are more great movies that I think you would have a LOT of fun with. Cheers from Canada! :)

14:00 Fun fact, the Mummy does speak Hebrew there, but mistakenly turns to Benny in the feminine form: "Ani ukhal lehishtamesh BAKH/I may have use for you" (BAKH is you in female form, while BEKHA is male form). The rest of the Hebrew is kinda okay, yet Benny speaks gibberish there... This bit has provided many laughs back then in Israel 1999.

The humor in this movie is awesome. This movie does have a fail. They know the mummy hates cats yet they don't buy 30 cats or anything? He just wants his girl back. He actually gets her in the sequel.

Some have said that parts of the movie are utterly ridiculous. They are firing 8 or 9 shots from a 6-shooter without reloading. I agree with others that also say that this is ridiculous. You can get 12 shots with no problem from a 6-shooter before you need to reload. Watch the sequel. It's one of the few movies where you can understand why a villain wants to kill a kid. You don't have to condone it, I don't, but I can understand his motive.

I remember.. i've seen this in theatre back in 1999, it was so much fun, like a Indiana Jones movie, but definitley more funnier, because they know, this is kinda stupid and they have just fun with it. Sometimes a good adventure is all you need.

18:56 _"Quicksand!"_ 🤔 In the middle of the _desert?_ You understand that quicksand pits usually form along the banks of _rivers,_ right? They depend on an environment with _water._ Thus, they're a lot more likely to form along the banks of rivers in tropical _forests_ than in deserts. Especially deserts _this_ dry.

There are three Brandon Frasier Mummy films. The first two are a lot of fun, the third, not so much. And you should stay as far away as possible to the 2017 Tom Cruise “The Mummy”. However, come October, I hope you will look into the original (and imo best) version, The 1932 Boris Karloff classic.
