Johnny Mathis is known for his beautiful romantic ballads. He has a very unique velvet voice. His music has spanned over 6 decades. He had so many great hits such as "Wonderful! Wonderful!", "It's Not for Me to Say", "The Twelfth Of Never", "Gina", "What Will Mary Say", "Misty,", etc. He also did a couple of duets with Deniece Williams, "Too Much, Too Little, Too Late" and "You're All I Need to Get By".

Johnny Mathis is a genius of breath control--you'll never hear him take a breath that wasn't planned with great forethought. He has mastered the process of "circular breathing", and can sing indefinitely without stopping to breathe, because of it. Ask any seasoned horn player about the difficulty--same application. And Mathis is as smooth as silk, no matter the song. Incredible singer, incredible man. I've cried my way home, listening to him after work--and loved every moment of it.

Would love to hear crooner Tony Bennett, "I Left My Heart in San Francisco". He has an amazing voice. But the coolest thing about him is that later in his career he did duets with everybody from Amy Winehouse to k. d. lang to Lady Gaga. He's 96 now and JUST retired because of Alzheimer's. Such a talent.

One of the great singers of his age. With Johnny his style is instantly recognizable. Johnny is still alive at the ripe young age of 87. This is a great cut, but if you want to see the original little boy lost (the image Sam Smith has today) singing live, watch him do the incredible "It's Not For Me To Say" in the old black and white version from around 1957. Also any version, especially the early ones, of him doing the classic "Misty", "Wonderful Wonderful", and the Christmas classic, "Winter Wonderland".

It's been a terrific 2-day stretch on this channel for crooners. Yesterday, you finally got back to The King Of The Romantic Ballads during the 1970's Barry Manilow. Today, you finally got back to The King Of The Romantic Ballads during the 1950's Johnny Mathis. While I don't have another crooner to suggest, I do have a piano-playing singer-songwriter to suggest whose songs have yet to be introduced on your channel. He is Neil Sedaka who was very successful and popular during the late 50's and early 60's. His great songs from that era include "Breaking Up Is Hard To Do", "Calendar Girl", "Happy Birthday Sweet Sixteen", "Oh Carol", and "Next Door To An Angel". Neil Sedaka also made a comeback in the mid-1970's with songs such as "Laughter In The Rain" and "Bad Blood". I hope you start reacting to some Neil Sedaka songs.

My hs buddy was a masterful piano player, and played one year for John Williams' infamous Christmas Gentlemen's parties (aka of Savannah "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil fame). He didn't want to go alone and asked me to go to "turn music pages". Highly skeptical, (in my late teens or early 20s) my curiosity got the best of me, so I went. So glad I did, as I met the incomparable Johnny Mathis, who sang a few songs. What a smooth voice.

Once I commented that Johnny has a such a wonderful, smooth, soothing voice, and he has all those vocal gymnastics going on, but it’s hard to watch him because he makes such weird faces. And John (my boss) jumped up and said “He HAS to do that in order to get those sounds!” I burst out laughing and then we both did. I’ll never forget that. Because my boss was such a “smooth talking” calm dude but man, he REALLY got excited about Johnny Mathis music! 😁👏👍Thanks for the memories. 👍

Guys, you can't go wrong with Johnny Mathis. Folks, like him or not, you have to admit, this man has magnificently stood the test of time, no scandals, no beefs with other artists, none of that, just pure classy music. I saw him a few years back on a clip performing on Oprah. Oprah gushed over this man and his voice. Give a listen to the CD from years ago,😇 " Heavenly", it is aptly titled, every song is a gem. Also, he did an album in the 80's " In The Still of The Night" with accompaniment with the group Take 5, just listen to him sing an old classic " Then You Can Tell Me Goodbye", absolutely beautiful.😊. You want 2 more crooners, Brook Benton " Its Just a Matter of Time" and Arthur Prysock " Its Too Late Baby. I have many more, but digest these first ok. You guys do in depth reactions, you really break it down.

OMG OMG OMG!!!! I am so happy y'all listened to Johnny!!! He is my FAVORITE!!! His voice makes me melt!! There is a movie by the name of "Chances Are" and that song was the song for that movie. The movie has Robert Downey Jr in it and Cybil Shepard. It's a really good movie!!

True that they used the song in the movie but it was a major hit for Mathis much earlier than that. It was his hit in 1958.

His voice is enough to make you re-evaluate your choice of favorite crooners. Johnnie's voice is incomparable, simply the best.

I have such wonderful associations with Johnny Mathis and his music with my late husband. The first song we danced to was Chances Are played by the band at the Dorchester in London. Years later we were living in Vegas and Mathis was on my bucket list of performers I wanted to see live. My husband got tickets for the first show when Mathis came town. What a performance! Sat on a bar stool and sang for over 2 hours. Thank you so much for this reaction. So many good memories of being young and head over heels in love!❤

Johnny Mathis has one of smoothest voices ever to grace the radio. He is one cool dude. Next you should listen to "Wonderful, Wonderful".

The purest voice I ever heard. I am so lucky to have lived when voices like these were on television. Nat King Cole, Johnny Mathis, Mel Torme (the velvet fog) Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., and Tony Bennet. Some I enjoyed more than others, but Johnny never failed to make me swoon. Try his version of "Memory" from the Broadway play Cats. And yeah, it was a time when celebrities were and were expected to be elegant in dress and behavior.

Fell in love with his voice when I was 3 back in 1966. Mom played his album often. Love his voice. Wonderful Wonderful. The Twelfth of Never. One of my other most favorite solo artist is Josh Groban, To Where You Are. I'll never forget when Oprah had them both on her show the same day. I was in heaven.

I was wondering if you'd discover this amazing talent. Johnny Mathis, the man with the velvet voice, can "croon" with the best of them. He has had 5 albums on the Billboard charts simultaneously, equaled only by Frank Sinatra and Barry Manilow. Other chart topping hits include: "Wonderful Wonderful ", "Its not for me to say"", and "Too much too little too late" - a single recorded in 1978 with Denise Williams. He has recorded duets with Dionne Warwick, Natalie Cole and Gladys Knight. He has had opera training, and his octave range and control are amazing. One of The Best!

Songs like this one are the reason why Johnny Mathis became known as a ballad singer and the era's reigning king of make-out music. Mathis shows all the symptoms of being in love in the swooning romantic tune, written by Robert Allen and Al Stillman. He sings: Chances are 'cause I wear a silly grin The moment you come into view Chances are you think that I'm in love with you. This was Mathis' first #1 hit single. Mathis was just two years into his recording career at the time, but Columbia Records was pressuring him for a new release, so his producer Mitch Miller came up with the idea for a hits package. "That was Mitch Miller's idea," Mathis explained in a 2018 Songfacts interview. "That was the first time I had a chance to go out of the country and go to Great Britain. They wanted me to go in the studio and make some more recordings. I had had some success with 'It's Not for Me to Say,' and I wasn't able to record anything new, so he threw the first four recordings that I did - both sides on them - and called them Johnny's Greatest Hits. That was a little flamboyant, because it was not the greatest hits, yet. But that was a great beginning for a lot of people. Even Mozart has a Greatest Hits now. Good idea from Mitch Miller." He has a beautiful voice. We saw him in concert in 1990ish. A great concert but he never talked to the audience in between songs...apparently he's extremely shy. Tony Bennett on the other hand talked and talked between songs. Loved both.

Before thirty a singer who talk to the audience does it because he has something to say. After forty a singer who talk to his audience does it because he is out of breath and needs a pause. ( Charles Aznavour Olympia 1968).

That Greatest Hits Album is a wonderful listen too. Johnny was the very first singer to make a "Greatest Hits Album". You will love that album, every song is majik. Johhny was is a Man who knows how to sing. If you play more songs you will see/hear his range. Unbelievable range.

I've loved Johnny Mathis for a large part of my 62 years. I had the great pleasure of seeing him in concert a couple of years ago and he still has it, or at least 95%of it. The much higher notes ellude Mr. Mathis now, but that's understandable given his age.

When I first heard his records at the age of 8 or 9 I was absolutely HOOKED! One of my favorite songs of his is "Tenderly" If you want to hear his full crooning range check out that one. His voice rises and falls effortlessly as if being carried by the wind. Simply the romantic best! 😌💞🎤🎶💖
