Sometimes straight up dissonance works, sometimes perfect harmony works. I love both. Both can be equally moving. Can't imagine "Hello It's Me" by Todd Rundgren full of disharmony, even though the singer is a little melancholy. Funny you should say that, because I think even The Darkness' most intense songs are still quite melodic.

In regards to the digital processing part, what I like to do in my music is sing the lines until they're good to my ear, so I don't have to fix anything in post-production. When I was producing my second record "Reset", I didn't use any pitch correction and tried to get the performance as close to "perfect" as I could. I also experimented a lot with multitracking vocals, so it gives them a different quality. With all that said, to someone who listens to punk/rock music that has fluctuating tempo and sharp/flat notes left and right, it may still sound "over-produced" or whatever, but for my pop/electronic genre I feel like it fits. Now, the Stones are a different story to me. They have that organic rock sound that needs no Melodyne... Just like The Darkness, in fact. Imagine auto-tuning I Believe In A Thing Called Love 🤣

I think the song is cool, and i agree with your comment on the fact that they are trying to make stuff adjusted to the new digital times of today, maybe looking for new generations who mostly are used to artificial things in their lifes. The autotune is a tool which is used in a lot of ways and, in my opinion, it doesn't always mean that the singer doesn't know to sing. It is used to create effects on the voice. In the past people added low or high vocals and now it has been changed by the auto tune... I like much more the natural voice, of course, but Mick Jagger knows singing, he sings better than a lot of young singers of today who could't sing without the autotune...that is the difference! Edit to add: I glad to see David in his natural place again!
@ollidix4090
@ollidix4090 7 ай бұрын
I think pitch correction can be a handy tool in production, personally I use it when I record vocals because I am not a confident singer and usually end up quite pitchy. Recording a vocal take, “tuning” it, then recording the next take singing along to the tuned one helps me stay a lot more in tune and make a result much more pleasing to my ears. The tuned vocals never reach the final track (because usually they sound awful and weird) but they help me in making the final vocals sound a lot better, and help with my pitchy singing. I’m sure I’ll reach a point where I don’t need that first step any more as my singing improves, but for now it’s an invaluable tool for me :)

So you're not a singer. You like to sing, which is great, but you are untrained most likely...very few are tone deaf. Sounds more to me that you are happy to sing incorrectly, as long as you can fix it up with software. That is getting you further away from building an ability, cuz you wont throw off your crutch. Working with a Vocal Coach/Voice Teacher will gain you much more as a musician. At a certain point, one may as well have AI take over the tough stuff.

I totally agree about the autotune. I was listening to Radio X (there's really not a lot of choice in radio stations for indie music) and they were remarking about a band's new track, and that the band had said something like "we put the track through autotune and it sounded great so we decided to release it". I can't remember which band it was, but I didn't like them before that statement and definitely didn't like them afterwards. I don't like listening to vocal perfection. There's so many artists out there with great but boring vocals that sound like they are singing over a backing track, and I just switch off mentally when listening to them.

Oooh, vocal perfection can be awesome, like in bluegrass or other americana - ultra-clean harmonies that /sound/ like it was autotuned but most definitely isn't, and when those voices match and mesh in a nice room it's a fantastic experience (I sing with friends at times)

Every person is unique, every singer is unique and every voice is unique. We’re not cyborgs (yet 🙄) so why use auto tune to make everyone sound the same? No one is perfect so why should their voices be? I love hearing little bits of imperfections in people’s vocals, its humanising in a world that seems to be becoming increasingly androgynous. Accents aren’t adjusted in vocal recordings and pronunciations often go astray to fit a rhyme or melodic device so why pitch-shift? I always listen out for Justin muddling up his ‘th’s’ with ‘f’s’ because I’ve always struggled with that myself and it makes me giggle every time I catch it! Those little imperfections are endearing. Forget Melodyne, the only auto tune I want to see is melamine - Laurel & Hardy style! 😂😂😂

Brilliant stuff Justin Sir - your noodling or dichotomy makes this music sound way more interesting than the sounds from your speakers 😁👍

That dressing gown is super gorgeous; I think Justin has worn it at the end of every Permission to Land show recently. The last performance at The Roundhouse was my highlight of the year 🙏

Love it and enjoyed the breakdown. Thank you. For my money, the best two tracks on the album that the band hasn't released as singles are "So Close" and "Whole Wide World" for those who are interested. Great songs.

that little figure also figures prevalent in the verse on "Almost Hear You Sigh" off of Steel Wheels. Of course, it's indicative of the sort open G staple that has come to characterize many Stones progressions post Ry Cooder showing Keef the open G tuning in 1969 (or so?).

Justin, Were you aware that there is a Japanese quartet by the named "Oh No Darkness!!" out of Osaka, I believe. Their bass player has this high pitched Kawaii voice with a bit of Macy Gray growl to it. They may have dissolved, but they have an ethereal sound to them.

Bit of Dire Straits - Sultans of Swing and Black or White by Michael Jackson in the guitar at different points, along with that Rod Stewart bassline "homage".

A music industry veteran I follow on social media, says all of it happened in the old days too. It was just very laborious and painstaking. They used to chop up tape, copy it, paste it, therefore stretching it. They could always speed up or slow down tape playback, changing the pitch. It's just that everybody has easy access to it these days, on their phones!

Malarkey. Pitch changing with slower or faster tape speed is nothing akin to digital pitch correction.

@@mattroberts86they would always punch in a part that needed to be fixed….. no pitch shifting or moving the vocals around….

@Bernz66 yeah punch in to re-record a bad part, not manipulating it with the machine to make bad notes acceptable! Auto tuned stuff sounds kinda like flange to me.... always reminds me of the Cher battleship song. "Do you believe in love " I believe the song was ..... overdone vocal digitizing as an effect on that song eventually used widely for digital cheating lol

Hello. I had me a little chuckle when I heard 'Bite My Head Off'. 4th track in on t'album. It sounded like The Rolling Stones were parodying The New York Dolls mimicking The Rolling Stones. Happy Day.

Yes! But not because they're not good enough, just because they're taking up space, as long as the industry has easy ticket sales and streams from big acts that rely on nostalgia they won't invest in newer acts

We are so overwhelmed by pitch perfect, souless noise, that means nothing, and is EVERYWHERE, which is why kids are still wearing Led Zeppelin, Beatles and Nirvana tee shirts. They couldn't even tell you why. they just know what the real sh&t is! I think Queen has the most plays ever. Bingo! imho of course
