No Buckethead, no Allan Holdsworth, no Paul Gilbert, no Tommy Emmanuel, no Paco de Lucia... Rolling Stone never ceases to fail. It's been decades since they went downhill and decided to remain at the bottom.

Slash got me into playing guitar. His sound is so iconic that you can pick out his solo in a song without knowing he was part of the song. One of the most iconic of all time.

I feel you on Chuck Berry. They had a show on MTV back in the day called “The List” and they did a top ten guitarist episode. I boycotted MTV for 3 years because they didn’t even mention Chuck Berry. I don’t think he is top ten either but I would put him in the top 20 for influence. Also he did write the most iconic rock and roll intro of the 20th century.

Moving knopfler from top 30 to 96 made me so sad. Hearing him on alchemy live one random day in high school changed my life. He made me love rock and roll and I’m sure many people feel the same. There’s no one else who could do it like him. His sound is instantly recognizable

I am pretty sure that John Petrucci is not on the list. That is a travesty. he not only is one of the most influential shredders out there in one of the greatest progressive metal bands ever, he also plays with such feel and emotion as well.

I grew up remembering music from the 70s and 80s being i finished high school in the early 80s. I have saw more than a few guitarist that when watching them perform you can see that they always give it everything that they had . Please let give the recognition to the ones that definitely deserve it.

My favorite part of this list (because I stopped reading there) was Judas Priest's guitartists, the guys who played the solos for Painkiller, Ram it Down, Beyond the Realms of Death, The Sentinel, you know the usual, and then the next one on the list above them is Lzzy Hale, a chick who probably can play Am F C and G and that's it.

I am always shocked that Roy Clark is never on any of these lists. Probably because he was mainly classical and country, but he was undeniably one of the best.

I agree that both Trucks and Allman are world class players and have done some really fine work. But and here it is, are you familiar with Johnny Winter at all, if not, if you can find the time you may want to! There's a performance he did on David Letterman of a song he wrote called Rock and Roll. His playing will send shivers up your proverbial spine, he absolutely flies through some death defying chilly sequences, he changes the time, the key all in service to the song, and careens through it never losing control. Allan Holdsworth, Shawn Lane, Guthrie Govan, Greg Howe, Michael Romeo, John Petrucci, Tosin Abasi, Paul Gilbert, Buckethead, Joe Satriani - there are more obviously but these guitar players alone blow every single one of these “Top 250” out of the water. Without question. No contest.

First time I've seen this channel. Good video. No matter who makes a list like this everybody else is going to be disagree with some rankings and snubs. I thought they did a good job of including some names that aren't usually on these lists and a better than usual for them list of looking beyond just Boomer icons. If you are not familiar with Poison Ivy Rorschach and you are a Jack White fan I definitely recommend digging into her band The Cramps. They are a major, major influence on the kind of Garage/Rockabilly music The White Stripes came out of and still one of the very best to do it. They also have a lot of songs inspired by Horror movies so they're perfect for this time of year.

Andrés Segovia did more than anybody for the guitar. He literally reinvented singlehandlely the instrument, took it from just a flamenco bar instrument and allowed it to be taken seriously and played in concerts. Withouth him none on this list would have existed.

There is absolutely no way Jack White and Neil Young are higher on the list then Slash

Here's why Chuck Berry deserves such a high position: I'll preface by saying I'm an old fart that played pro in the late 60s & early 70's. Just like Jimi Hendrix influenced every guitar player after him, Chuck Berry was the reason so many guitar players of my generation wanted to play guitar. You just can't imagine what it was like to hear "Johnnie B Goode" on the radio in the 50s. Ask Keith Richards, John Lennon and 1000s of other guitar players of that era why they play guitar and they'll tell you Chuck Berry.

Wes Montgomery not in the top 20 is a shame. The fact they have Gilmour at #28 said it all….

Still in this day we have Tommy Emmanuel and Guthrie Govan - best in the world at their respective guitar choices (acoustic and electric) not on here

I think it's missing the following guitarists: Francis Rossi and Rick Parfitt (probably as a combo), Mdou Moctar, Wilko Johnson, Paco de Lucía, Woody Guthrie, John Squire (Probably in the top 20 if not even higher) Roy Clark and maybe Johnny Marr.

Johnny Marr, Robert Smith, Dave Navarro, Daniel Ash should be on this list, all for their very distinctive innovative stylings.

No Roy Clark? No Glenn Campbell? No Skunk Baxter, no Peter Frampton... The more I think about it, this is just an impossible task.

Love to know their criteria. Perhaps it was completely random so that it would generate discussion (rage?), but have just enough legit rankings so that people will read it.

It’s like they took all 250 guitarist and pressed randomize on the computer and said “that’s good enough”.

I’ve just been through the list and I was honestly kinda surprised that the guy who inspired me to take up guitar (Joe Walsh) was as far down as 130th. The guy helped transform a country band into one of the most recognisable rock bands on earth, had a solo career in which he has mastered guitar in rock, blues, and funk (to name just a few genres), has collaborated with some of the most legendary artists of all time. And Rolling Stone don’t consider him worthy of the top 100?

Gary Moore? Les Paul? Richie Sambora? Don Felder? Joe Walsh? Jason Becker? Should all be on list. Imo Les Paul is number 2, but I think top 10 is fair and most would agree top 25. Dude innovated, inspired, played AMAZINGLY. Not only was he lightning quick and more perfect every time, he invented multitrack recording, invited the loop pedal, made a recording studio in his house so good that every top musician in the world wanted to use is, invented backing tracks, and ofc invented that guitar that a lot of people like. A lot of top musicians have signature guitars. Nobody has a signature guitar that’s so popular that other musicians use yours to make their signature guitar. People like Eric Johnson, Clapton, Van Halen, BB King to mention a few would be ecstatic and like a fan when he invited them on stage to play with him. Outside of his skills this credits a high spot imo

Things that were astonishing to me: 1. The complete absence of Hank Marvin and Don Felder. Tommy Emmanuel would have been in my top 100 as well but I can understand his absence 2. How Knopfler was not in at least the top 50, if not the top 20 3. How Gilmour is at 28 and not in the top 5. 4. How Joe Walsh is outside the top 100. Could have at least put him and Felder together in the top 100. 5. Satch, Vai, Peter Green, Eric Johnson, Eric Clapton , the list of players that were rated way lower than they should be could go on for ages. Chuck Berry is way too high. Top 50 at best. No sign of Robben Ford too.

Glenn Campbell gets overlooked, especially now that it's out that Eddie Van Halen got Alice Cooper to connect him with Glenn Campbell for a guitar lesson, someone else should recognize his greatness. Eddie did.

The lack of Fripp is crazy. The guy is an instrumental tour de force and has been the brains behind King Crimson for over 50 years. He even has an entire guitar style and group of guitarists (League of Crafty Guitarists) based on his style and taught by him.

Hmm...seeing all these great guitarists who, in many cases, had guitars as iconic as those playing them - if you were to make a list of the top 20 guitars of all time? What would make your list? Just as an example, BB King's Lucille (Gibson ES-355) comes to mind.

The greatest guitarists should be fingerstyle guitarists, as they basically are one-man bands needing no drummer, bass player, or vocalist to round out their sound. Examples include, but are not limited to: Tommy Emmanuel, Phil Keaggy, Pierre Bensusan, Leo Kottke, Michael Hedges (although I admit vocalize on some songs). Their product is equal, if not superior, to any typical "greatest guitarist" listing.
