A perfectly reasonable first reaction. There is much more to Babymetal than meets the eye, but it's better not to overthink it at the very start. They are so insanely diverse in their music that it will take you quite a while to get to know them. For the first dozen tracks, bewilderment will be the default reaction, slowly to be taken over by amazement and appreciation. The Kami band are second to none. They are literally made up of some of the best musicians in Japan, and you will never hear any better metal music. And the girls are truly world class at what they do as well. It's just going to take you a while to figure out exactly what that is :-) Next, give "Rondo of Nightmare" a try. With the "Mischief of Gods" intro. Then "Road of Resistance". And always make sure to watch live performances whenever possible. They are best appreciated that way, as I'm sure you've already noticed. :-)

I am sure that this is how the majority (including myself) react to this Group. What it is? First thought when you see them for the first time. And this is fun and funny - you come to the conclusion already in the middle of the very first video with them. Damn, besides funny things, they also have a lot of very serious tracks - you understand when you start to delve into their work. Well And then .... yes, they just drag you into their fox hole. 😂

That's the difference between Babymetal and the rest of the metal bands. Babymetal sings with clean vocal, catchy chorus, heavy guitar riffs and positive lyrics. You'll get use to it after listening to 3 or 4 songs by them. The Tokyo Dome is the enormous stadium venue, but this is a compilation video of visuals from many live performances to what I think is "Big Fox Festival" audio. So that's part of your confusion, but some of it is the assault of Babymetal on your senses. It's different from what you are expecting and so you need some time to adjust. Now to the song itself. "Catch Me If You Can" is based on Japanese playground game of catch where the tagger is call an oni after a sort of Japanese ogre. The ogre is chasing the girls and asking if they are ready and they reply "no not yet". There is also a traditional Spring festival where people dress as ogres and are chased out of the house to ensure good luck for the rest of the year, they also warn the children to be good or they will take them away. The lyrics also say that you shouldn't "wear red shoes" and this probably refers to a Japanese nursery rhyme where a young girl wearing red shoes is taken away by a foreigner. I suggest you watch "Headbanger Legend 1997" next as that's a single live performance.

Great confused reaction. These young ladies put on a different sounding song and performance each time. They own any music genre they choose and as you can see have a world class backup band (The Kami Band) who love and respect these girls for their hard work and humble nature. Hope you keep on exploring their catalog. They have now matured into young ladies and evolved into a phenomenon of talent and discipline.

You could try Megitsune Music Video, or any live version. Or Ijime, Dame, Zettai from Sonisphere festival 2014, their first major appearance outside Asia. Enjoy.

Oh boy are you in for a ride. Babymetal touches on every kind of metal genre you can think of and mixes it with cute Japanese pop. It's infectious, to say the least. They do everything from Trash metal (Gimme Chocolate) to Indian infused metal (Shanti Shanti Shanti). They do Latin metal (Night Night Burn), Ska (Yava), Pirate (Oh Majinai), Trap (BxMxC), Ballad (No Rain No Rainbow), Prog (Tales of the Destinies), Death (Sis Anger), Djent (Karate), and over 40 other genres bending metal songs that will blow you away. You'll get a lot of suggestions from rabid fans but I say, pick any song at random. I guarantee you'll be pleasantly surprised no matter what you pick. They don't have any bad songs.

With Babymetal expect the unexpected

Some folks try way too hard in figuring out BabyMetal. First of all, the name has nothing to do with the ages of the girls. It is a genre of metal all on it's own. No two songs are alike. The lead singer Su-metal once said in an interview about their music, "Don't think, feel."

HaHaHa, We all know the BabyMetal brain freeze, it will take a bit for your brain to process what you just witnessed. How can something be so heavy and fun and cute, it still messes with me.

The confusion will fade but the fun will remain. My experience, anyway, but judging by the comments, that's how this works. So sit back, enjoy and don't think about it too hard.

Good first reaction and welcome to the BABYMETAL Galaxy. You already have very good info in the comments about this being a compilation from several different shows and what the song is about, so I won't repeat that - I'll try to tell you a bit about who they are (note to self - try to keep it short ....) Su-metal is the lead vocalist and the whole idea and concept for BABYMETAL is based around and only exists because of her talents. The other two girls - Yuimetal and Moametal - provide backing vocals, harmonies and do most of the dancing. They are more than just dancers - their role is key to what makes BABYMETAL unique. Su-metal rules the stage, Yuimetal and Moametal get the audience involved, they lead chants, when they sing the audience sing along to their parts, when they jump or make a particular move so does the audience. The backing band are the Kami Band (Kami means god or spirit, so they are the gods of guitar, bass and drums summoned - there is a lot of lore in what they do - to support BABYMETAL in all their live shows and they always used to wear the traditional burial robes and corpse face paint). More recently the robes are black and the face paint has been replaced with masks - the fans for the most part do not like the masks, they like to see their expressions and that they are having a really good time too. BABYMETAL formed in 2010 as a sub-unit of a J-Pop Idol group called Sakura Gakuin formed by the talent agency Amuse with a view to coaching and training the members in allaspects of entertainment. As such SG had a school theme and was for about a dozen girls aged 10 to 15. As part of the school theme there were sub-units like after school clubs (cooking, tennis, science, baton etc) and as well as the main group's songs and dances the sub-units, with three or so of the girls in each one, would get their own themed songs and dances that they would perform at the Sakura Gakuin shows and Idol festivals. One of the producers, Kei Kobayashi, was a life long metalhead, more used to working with bands, but J-pop Idol music was creating a bit of a monopoly of music in Japan and getting the vast majority of the air time on TV and radio, so to make a living he was working in the kids division with the Amuse Talent Agency who formed Sakura Gakuin. Kobayashi had noticed a girl, Suzuka Nakamoto, a year or two earlier singing with her previous J-pop trio (Karen Girl's) and was struck by her unusually loud, powerful and full on no holds barred singing style and had the thought she would be wasted in pop and could even front a metal band ... she was only 10 at that time. Suzuka joined Sakura Gakuin as a founder member along with one of her friends from the J-pop trio as that group ended when the anime they sang the songs for ended its run. Kobayashi proposed another sub-unit to be led by Suzuka - the Heavy Music Club - a fusion of metal with the J-pop style vocals and aesthetics. Amuse were not impressed with his idea - Sakura Gakuin was aimed at coaching the girls in all sorts of entertainment skills so they could go on after graduating when they were 15 to further their careers in their chosen field, but they still wanted to make a little money from the sale of records and so on and, given that the audience for metal in Japan at that time was shrinking, there was no real potential for a heavy music club to either make any money or to progress the girls any further. However, under the umbrella of Sakura Gakuin, Amuse allowed Kobayashi his pet project - they thought he was mad, but they provided no extra budget (the money went to the more commercially viable sub-units) so there was no real risk involved. So Kobayashi asked Su to lead the sub-unit and the two youngest and smallest girls in Sakura Gakuin - Yui Mizuno and Moa Kikuchi - to be her support. Their roles were defined as vocal and dance (Suzuka) scream and dance (Yui and Moa). At that time, in 2010, Su was 12, Yui and Moa are 18 months younger and were 11. They would perform under the name BABYMETAL - a pun based on the spelling in Japanese characters and pronunciation being virtually identical to Heavy Metal and it also indicated the birth of a new metal genre which they called Kawaii Metal (cute metal). Suzuka became Su-metal, Yui and Moa became Yuimetal and Moametal. Against all expectations BABYMETAL started to grow in popularity and to gain their own fans and audience - even more than the other sub-units. It was decided that when Su was due to graduate from Sakura Gakuin after her 15th birthday BABYMETAL should separate from Sakura Gakuin to become an independent band in their own right. Up until then they had performed with a backing track and in a couple of small shows of their own they had a fake band dressed in skeleton suits and miming the instruments on stage with them - they were called Babybones. As part of the preparation for the split a live band was phased in playing at a couple of festivals and the encores in a couple of shows - they were the Kami Band, some of Japan's very best session musicians. The separation was completed at the end of 2013 at a show called Legend 1997, the day after Su's 16th birthday (she was born in 1997). The Kami Band played the last 5 songs in that show and, starting with the shows at the Budokan, early in 2014 became the full time support for all live shows ... they have been with them ever since. The Kami Band has core members, but they all have their own bands and projects so there are others who might step in depending on availability. In 2019 for the US tour and the European tour in 2020 the Kami Band of the West (American musicians) were introduced and supported BABYMETAL throughout those tours ... this was probably because (in part at least) these were the most extensive tours so far so the Kami Band of the East had some clashes in their own schedules that made being on tour for so long either very difficult or impractical. In 2014 BABYMETAL's video for their song 'Gimme Chocolate' went viral just before they embarked on their first 'world' tour - their first venture outside of Asia (this was just after the Budokan shows where 'Akatsuki' was filmed). As a result they were moved from a small side stage or tent where they had been booked to play at Sonisphere festival in the UK and they opened the main stage on the Saturday morning instead. This was pretty much make or break - they took to the stage to be faced by about 60,000 UK metalheads, most of whom had never heard of them (plus a few who had threatened to throw bottles at this 'gimmick' band) and a few hundred of their own fans. They played 5 songs and left the crowd calling for more - their merch outsold all the other bands playing that weekend (there were big names among them like Iron Maiden and Metallica). They have 3 studio albums, several live albums and DVDs and about 50 songs now - and every one of them is different. Some are very metal others lean towards their pop roots, they play virtually every metal genre and blend in many other musical styles and genres - usually when you least expect it. They are also one of the very best live bands in the world right now. Try 'Ijime, Dame, Zettai' live at Sonisphere 2014 for your next reaction, it was the closing number from their set. BABYMETAL have not looked back ever since, touring the world every year since then, winning well over 20 of the 30+ awards they have been nominated for. They became the first Japanese band to headline Wembley Arena, they sold out the Tokyo Dome (55,000 people) two nights running (a couple of the clips in the video you watched were from there - you remarked on the big circular stage with the coffin shaped runways) and their third album was the first by any Asian band to hit number 1 in the Billboard Hard Rock charts. ⚡ 💀 💕 / 🏃‍♀️👹 So this cute song is about playing a game that is kind of like hide-and-go-seek, with some tag and blind-man's bluff mixed in. Pursued by an "Oni"" which is a kind of Japanese Ogre. If not a real monster, than someone pretending to be one in order to terrify children. Fun times! The recurring "Maada da yo." part that Yui and Moa, the two youngest sing means "Not ready yet." If much of their charm is in the blending of the cute and the brutal, this song is a great example. They haven't performed this one since 2017. I caught it that year when they were touring with Korn and Stone Sour.

Oh, this is a recent reaction. Dude, you're arriving late to the party. Neverthless, you should check their mv Karate next. Headbanger and Megitsune (my pers. fav. ) are also good choices. Also in the Japanese scene, you have Band-Maid and Nemophila. You're in for a treat!

Their production efforts put American bands to shame. Only Rammstein comes close, but the sounds are totally different. They serve up performances, not simply songs. The live performances are best because the crowd becomes part of the show. The "Karate" video may be the only studio version I like better.

Check out Babymetal - 'Megitsune' (Music Video) this is a perfect intro for babymetal, because this song is so BABYMETAL.

The first time I watched a BABYMETAL video i had the same "WTF I'm watching/listening" reaction, but for me it was the song Gimme Chocolate. They have very amazing metal songs and all of their songs are entirely different, all of them will surprise you. I wasn't sure whether you yourself would consider this a positive reaction, since your primary emotion seems to have been puzzlement. But I think that's a good thing. It's not easy to stand out in today's music scene, and BABYMETAL are certainly unique. And most importantly, they entertained you and left you with a (little) smile. I'm sure it will get bigger when you watch more. I have been a fan for about four years now, and they still do that to me every time.

Not the best choice of songs to introduce yourself to BABYMETAL. I've only discovered them a few weeks ago and can't get enough. Their sound is simultaneously genre-defying and genre-defining. Certainly NOT the best version! In fact, you've managed to trip upon a "compilation" video (keep an eye on their skirts which change from red to black, the shape of the stage changes) which will probably prevent you from being blocked but, as you so pointedly demonstrated (and something I've been saying for a long time), "compilation" videos cause confusion in the viewer/reacter and doesn't really capture the essence of a live performance since the music and singing is obviously overdubbed. I would suggest, if at all possible, steer clear of compilation videos - they do the artist in question an injustice. Anyway, "Catch Me If You Can" is among their better songs. I suggest you take in something a little more sedate (!) like "Headbanger", specifically the "Legend 1997" version ( kzfaq.info/get/bejne/grR2nKeIr86WdnU.html ). Perhaps that will get you geared up for the more juicy songs of Babymetal.

Oh, at last you hit these beasts, angels and fully loaded insane music. The band is called Kami band(God band in Japanese). The first guitar solo is by Mikio. He always surprises us with very unusual code progression. The second is Ohmura, a pupil of Mikio. The 6 string base is played by Boh. His both hands tapping sounds like coming from the other planet. Machine speed drums is Aoyama. The singing and dancing by Su-, Moa- and Yui-Metal are somehow strangely match to the heavy sounds. My recommendations are ‘Rond of Nightmere’ @Budokan Black Night (live) There are many other amazing ones, though…..

You shouldn’t have used a compilation video, they are always confusing af :). The huge stage was at Tokyo Dome, a stadium filled with 55.000 fans on two consecutive days (110.000 total).
