ITS BABYMETAL MONDAY!!! On this segment of Rappers React Smokey and Hollywood react to "Death" by BabyMetal. There is something eerie and quite creepy about this video. Any suggestions, send them our way.

This concert was in 2013, and was to celebrate Su-Metal's 16th birthday. Girl 1: "So we all recently had our 16th birthday party. I had a party at home with all my friends. We played games and had a sleepover, how about you guys?" Girl 2: "My friends took me out for dinner, then we went to a movie, it was fun! How about you, Suzuka?" Su-Metal: "I performed a heavy metal concert, at the end of which I was put upon a cross by robed black-hooded figures, and crucified to be reborn as a Goddess of Metal, while 8,000 rabid fans chanted "DEATH" repeatidly." Girl 1 & 2: "..." *backing away slowly*

When she was celebrating her 18:th birthday she preformed Painkiller and Breaking the law, together with Red Hot Chilli Peppers drummer Chat Smith who got her cake.

The Kami Band is all Male. Legend of 1997 is the year of Su's birth. This show was Su-Metal's 16th birthday, where she was reborn into the Metal Goddess.

The name of the song is actually "BABYMETAL DEATH". The title is a play on words. The word "death" in Japan is pronounced "desu", as they don't have a "th" sound. Desu is also a word in Japanese meaning to be, and its how you introduce yourself i.e. John desu = I'm John. So, Babymetal death sounds like babymetal desu which can be interpreted as Babymetal introducing themselves. Hence why it's the first song on their first album, and was normally played first at their concerts until it was retired at the end of 2017.

Depends which band you're talking about. The Kami Band is all male. Babymetal is all female.

@@Jordan-Ramses While true, at this point, most consider the Kami Band & the girls to be 1 group. Though, in the beginning after the Kami Band was incorporated, they were actually "Seasonal" Performers. By that I mean, that some would come in & come out from time to time. However, I believe that they do now have a Set members of the Kami Band that doesn't change.

They have two of them now. One is American. Since last year. It's like freelance work. If you can play guitar and have open availability you can play in the Kami Band.

And now you know what to show people who deny that BABYMETAL is Metal. And I think you might be on to something here: Perhaps Yui's parents saw this and said "OK, my lilttle lady, you are not going to see that Su person again". The lyrics are simple, but not without finesse: "Desu" is the Japanese copula "to be" and as such is also used for introductions. So when the girls are saying "Su-metal desu, Yuimetal desu, Moametal desu, BABYMETAL desu" it literally means "I am Sumetal, I am Yuimetal, I am Moametal, we are BABYMETAL". Usually the song was played as an opener to their shows, so it was the perfect introduction. As it happens, in Tokyo area Japanese (which can be considered "high" Japanese) the u at the end of the word "desu" is almost silent, so it sounds almost exactly like the Japanese pronunciation of the word "death". I like the whole lore thing around the band. Much of it is hard to follow and borderline nonsense, but that just makes it more interesting, and it ads to their uniqueness and mystery.

That was fun. icebalm (and others) have provided all the explanations and translations you need to understand the song. This whole show (Legend 1997 celebrating Su-metal's 16th birthday) was about Su sacrificing her human existence and transitioning from Jpop Idol to being reborn as a metal Goddess chosen to lead the metal resistance, reuniting the world with and through metal, and about BABYMETAL leaving the Idol world to become a metal band in their own right. It started with a techno remix of 'Headbanger' which was entirely - and obviously - lip-synced and the first few songs having the Babybones miming the instruments to a backing track. This was all about how they came from the Idol system. For the last 5 songs of the show they became BABYMETAL the metal band with the Kami Band playing live replaced the Babybones and it all culminated with this performance of 'BABYMETAL Death' with Su being crucified to be reborn as the metal Goddess Su-metal. It is all theatre and the sort of show that BABYMETAL and very few, if any, other bands could do. So how did you celebrate your 16th birthday? I know I didn't have my two best friends crucify me while thousands of people chanted "death death death" for mine. #notacult

Fun fact: the song is named “Death”, because when they say it in Japanese it sounds like the Japanese word, “desu”; which means “to be, it is”. Also, this was on SU-Metal’s 16th birthday.

First of all, the song is called BABYMETAL DEATH, not just "Death", also, they've been playing this song at every shows until 2018. One really interesting thing is that they were most of the time playing this song as an opening, it was pretty much always the first song of a show. And there's a reason for that, as Death is actually a play on the word Desu in Japanese, which is used to introduce yourself. So when they say "Su-Metal Death, MoaMetal Death, YuiMetal Death, BABYMETAL Death", to a Japanese speaking audience, they're just saying "I am Su-Metal, I am MoaMetal, I am YuiMetal, we are BABYMETAL" ^^ There's so much to say about this song and this performance. I'm just gonna copy/paste a google translation (so not very good) of a little excerpt from a small article I wrote in French about this song, cause I'm too lazy to properly re-write the whole thing myself in another language xD : Before being the hymn to chaos that we all know, BM DEATH lasted only two seconds and was found in a bonus video in the CD single "Headbanger". Yes, just two seconds, and this in tribute to the "song" You Suffer, by the British group Napalm Death, which was founded in the early 80s and pioneered the GrindCore genre, a more extreme derivative of Hardcore Punk. Let's hear those two songs side by side * Obviously you can't hear it cause it's a youtube comment not an actual article lol* One sentence, a guitar and a drum kit, the node is obvious. But now let's go to the final version of BM DEATH, and the Old School Metalheads would instantly recognize at 0:00 the legendary riff from One by Metallica, small comparison: *Again can't put sound in a youtube comment :v, but the riff in the Metallica music video is at 4:37 * Well there I will not make you the affront to present Metallica to you, and I already mentioned them before. But knowing that all BABYMETAL shows started with this song (until 2018) with such a powerful and symbolic riff, that necessarily means something.

This was 2014, her 16th birthday. The cross does not have the religious connotations in Japan and the Japanese friends I talkjed to did not see any religous imagery in this performance. This is not the first time they crucified Su - they did it for her birthday at the Legend D concert too.

Babymetal. Not your typical idol group ;-) And not your typical metal band. :-) This was Su-metal's 16th birthday. You were right, she was being reborn as a goddess. I would say the best darn sweet 16 party ever ! In Japan they don't really know much about Christianity so they don't really know. Babymetal just uses symbolism from anywhere/anything. #notacult but just a cult-like fandom... LOL

⚡ 💀 💕 / 💀 💀 💀 I've told this story a few times now, but I saw BABYMETAL open for Korn & Stone Sour in Chula Vista, CA back in 2017. The concert was on Yui's Birthday (June 20th). There were hardcore Korn fans on either side of me, who were expecting something called BABYMETAL to be pretty mellow. They opened with 'BABYMETAL Death'. The look of shock was worth the price of admission by itself. : ) BTW, Su has been crucified five times now. At Legend D, Legend Z, Legend 1997, Tokyo Dome, and Legend S. Six times if you count both Legend S shows. Yui and Moa were crucified only once, at Tokyo Dome.

"B-A-B-Y-M-E-T-A-L. I am Su-Metal. I am YuiMetal. I am MoaMetal. We are BABYMETAL!" Hi Hollywood and Smokey. Good reaction! The show was called "Legend 1997" as this was Su-Metal's 16th birthday show, and she was born in 1997. There's also been a "Legend 1999" for Moa and Yui's 14th birthday, a "Legend - S", and a "Legend - M" for Su and Moa's 20th birthdays respectively played in their hometowns. There was a show played in Yui's home prefecture at Yokohama Arena which would have been "Legend - Y" however Yui had to leave the group formally in 2018 due to unspecified health reasons. Anyways, this song was usually played as an opener as a way for the group to introduce themselves to the audience. The whole song is a play on words, the english word "death" when spoken by a native japanese speaker sounds like the japanese word "desu" which loosely means "is/am/are", so the girls are saying "Su-Metal desu!" which means "I am Su-Metal!" There's lot of homages to Metallica in this song and performance. The opening riff is like "One", and the Mother Mary statue is like the "And Justice For All" lady justice statue.

I still have a little smile to myself when I hear this song. Most peoples first exposure to Babymetal would have been Gimme Chocolate and then maybe looked up Doki and iine. So they go out and buy the album and they get this as the first track. They must have thought the wrong CD got put in the case LOL.

Yes, this was the concert where the footage for the Gimme Chocolate video was shot. (Although the audio on Gimme Chocolate is the studio recording of the track.) As others have said, the Kami Band is all-male, but some of them have long hair and others wear wigs as part of their costume. In this video, the drummer Hideki Aoyama and the right-hand guitarist Leda Cygnus are wearing long-haired wigs. Anyway, details, details... You're dead right that the theatre, the spectacle, the show, is what it's all about here. Six months later, they would be setting foot on European soil and beginning their world conquest. I'm impressed that you figured out the "Su had to die to be reborn as a Metal-Goddess" aspect of the performance. Crazy how they celebrate a 16th birthday! Another interesting part of this concert is the transition from the Baby-bones backing performers to the Kami-Band. Only the encore of this show is with the Live band, the entire beginning featuring Baby-bones. It was the final use of Baby-bones, part of the transition from Babymetal the Sakura Gakuin club to Babymetal the band.

There were a few more Babybones appearances after this in 2013 and 2014, such as 'LIVE IN SINGAPORE' (their first solo show overseas), some TV appearances, and their "Two Man Show" with ChthoniC in Taiwan. The Kami Band were introduced back in October 2012 at 'Legend I' with a two song encore of 'Headbangeeeeerrrrr!!!!!' and 'Ijime Dame Zettai'. Folks are often surprised how long the Baby Bones and Kami Band overlapped.

The song is titled “Death” and it happens at the Legend 1997 concert from 2013. This was to commemorate Su-Metal’s 16th birthday, which I believe is a significant birthday in Japanese culture. This video shows Su being sacrificed to be reborn as the Queen of Metal, I believe. If not, someone please correct me. The Kami Band is actually all men, just with long hair and make-up that make it difficult at first to distinguish.

Its 15 in Japan and 20 your next biggie which they crucified her again . It just happened on day after her 16th i think they came up with idea for her 16th Birthday show . Or they probably done it on 15th . The done mike handovers in HeadBanger to Yui and Moa on there 15th Birthdays.

So the band created their own lore(religion?) behind themselves. Basically, the world is in chaos or destined to be destroyed, and the Fox God sent three disciples to spread metal music and save humanity. That's how we got Babymetal. This ritual is Su Metal dying and being reborn as a Metal Goddess. A lot of their imagery is a reference to large metal bands. Like the neck brace is referring to some drummer who hurt his neck headbanging, I don't remember who. The head falling off the statue is referring to a similar event that happened to Metallica, which is the girl's favorite metal band. From my perspective, the girls have an interesting combination of Japanese religious beliefs with Christian/Metal history. (Christian because of the negative anti-Christian stigma that's been associated with metal music, which metal bands just embraced)(You will also hear the saying "Gods of Metal," which is mostly a saying for awesome bands, but it looks like Babymetal is taking the idea to a new level.)

You could also look at it from another angle - that the head of the statue of the mother of Jesus falling off, and most of this ritual, is just more "anti-Christian stigma" being expressed by another metal band. To quote a comment above, "now you know what to show people who deny that BABYMETAL is Metal". Of course I'm not saying all metal is satanic or whatever, but a whole lot of gimmicks by metal bands are a clear play on Christian beliefs.

@@cane.xo40560 Hey! Im glad you asked. There is nothing to worry about and you can watch this band without worry. The whole "religion" thing is a gimmick. It's an act strictly for entertainment purposes, tailored towards the metal community. Metal music has had a reputation of being anti-christian because people always judge it before they get to know it, so the metal community just makes fun of that idea and most of the art/imagery is just satire. The girls in Babymetal were 10 years old when it was formed in 2010; and they had a background in pop music, so most of the singing and dancing relates to young women. The song "Gimmie Chocolate" is about wanting to eat chocolate without worrying about getting fat. (Their dance acts out eating chocolate.) "Ijime, Dame, Zettai" literally means Stop Bullying, Forever!. It's about the negative mental and emotional impact it has on people. (Their dance simulates fights.) "Catch Me If You Can" is a song about the game hide and seek. (Their dance is them playing hide and seek.) "Sis. Anger" is easily their heaviest song. The two shorter girls who do most of the dancing and backup vocals have their own songs they perform themselves. The duo is called Black Babymetal because of their super heavy sounding songs. (Black metal is a metal genre) But Sis Anger is about being annoyed with boys and their silly games.

I've suscribed just for your babymetal reacts! A very promenent song during their first and second of their 3 albums was Ijime, Dame, Zettai which was about anti bullying (one of the reasons us babymetal fans try to be so nice!) So I think you should give it a react! also a song ONLY featuring the two younger girls Onedari Daisakusen is very fun! the first two albums each have a couple songs that have a solo song by Suzuka and duet by Moa and Yui. if you do one Suzukas solo songs I'd say Amore

The neck brace first appears in the Headbanger video in which Su puts on a neck brace that possesses her with the spirit of metal. It’s a nod to Yoshiki, the drummer of X Japan that famously has to wear a neck brace when he drums because he rocks so hard and his health is a bit frail.

A lot of metal dudes have long hair haha The statue is the Virgin Mary. Metal has a lot of anti-Christian imagery, there's a whole history behind it. Edit: It's so badass that Su wanted to be crucified for her 16th birthday. Most Japanese people aren't religious at all let alone Christian so I doubt their parents care that much

Having the song being named 'Death' is a also a wordplay, because in the song they say "Su-Metal desu." (I am Su-Metal) and so on and when japanese people say 'Death' it sounds very much like 'desu'.

The statue is The Virgin Mary. It's seen as a symbol of birth and birthday celebration. This show is SuMetal's birthday show. All of the big shows, this, Budokan, Saitama Arena, Tokyo Dome are around the time of Su's birthday. The song is a play on Metallica in a couple of ways. The heavy intro is a take on One (the heavy part) "darkness, imprisoning me...." and the Virgin Mary statue that falls apart at the end is a play on Doris, aka the Lady Justice statue that was used during the Damage Justice tours at the end of the 80's.

I don't know who was in the skeleton suit tying Su to that cross but he needs to watch his hands, the girl just turned 16 Continuing with the parents These girls parents spent a lot of time and money to try and make their daughters dream come true, so they could one day become Jpop Idols. The girls finally become trainees and one day someone from the company comes to them and says, we want to start a metal band with your girls. They probably don't even know what metal is. Fast forward to the day of the show SU is all: mom, dad it's my birthday, you got to come to the show tonight. They go and they get to see their baby girl get crucified on stage CULTURE SHOCK

Some additional info. The band is composed of some of the best studio musicians in Japan.The members of the band are not always the same. They vary depending on availability and location. In these shows where they are wearing the white robes and the face paint (masks) . Priests wear white in Japanese culture and Kami are gods. They are the gods of metal. As others have said, this was Su's 16 birthday and she was being reborn from a music idol to the Goddess of Metal.

Legend One-Nine-Nine-Seven (referring to the year of Su's birth) It is the story that, receiving the legendary corset from the god of Metal, she abandons being human and shall be reborn as a goddess. The gene which has been determined from ancient time is destined to be guided, boarding on the ark of time. The apocalypse prophesied The DOOMSDAY. Towards it, There remains... little time.." Basically this show was the final step in BABYMETAL transitioning from Idol group sub-unit to independent metal band - it was also Su-metal's final step in her transition from J-Pop Idol - she was sacrificing her human existence and life as Suzuka Nakamoto the J-Pop Idol to be reborn as Su-metal the Metal Goddess chosen to lead the Metal Resistance.

The Kami Band is all male. They have two "sets" of the band, one for Japan and more recently one for the Western shows. In Japanese, when you intrduce yourself you say "watashi wa (your name) desu" or just "(name) desu". In this case they use death instead desu. At any rate, great reaction as always, maybe it's time to go more current with their catalog :)

Sup guys? That intro was hilarious with the grandma bit. I was gonna say if you guys like BabyMetal so much you guys should react to Band-Maid. They are an all girl heavy rock/metal band from Japan that have a theme about them. They all dress up in maid outfits but don't let there cute looks fool you, if you decide to check em out "Thrill" is a great introductory song to the band. But there song "Play (Live version)" really displays their prowess as a band, they absolutely rock and you should check em out. Keep up the great work!

Here's some background information on the girls as it relates to Metal [heavy & otherwise]. Prior to forming/creating Babymetal, none of them had ever heard Metal let alone heard of Metal. Cut to today, and they've performed in countless countries around the world and even performed AND met some legends in both the Metal Sub-industry and the Music as a whole.

As I understand it, the xian imagery is less religious and more rock, as I believe Babymetal are mostly devout Shinto practitioners? Crucifixion doesn't hold the same meanings and stigmas in Japan as in the west. I could be wrong. Either way, helluva stage show, yeah?

Correct, as in crucifixion in Japan was a form of execution up to the 19th century, you can even find photographic evidence on wikipedia under Crucifixion. It was also used as a way of torture in WWII. That being said, this act clearly has a religious meaning. I don't think it is intended to mock Christianity or any other religion, this is just what happens to you if you are the messenger of the Fox God.

As far as I can tell, no one in BABYMETAL has discussed their personal religious beliefs. There is a Fox God named Inari in traditional Shinto, although they were originally called that because they used foxes as messengers. It was later that this God/Goddess was depicted as a fox themselves. BABYMETAL's Metal Fox God is a unique interpretation. The majority religion in Japan is Buddhism, although many Japanese could be described as religiously Buddhist, and culturally Shinto.

the only buddhist rituals observed by most japanese people are the death rituals, and only because there are no shinto death rituals. honestly, most japanese people are not devoutly anything; they just take whatever seems cool. for example, christian churches are popular wedding venues, despite the fact that most japanese people will never set foot inside a christian church other than for weddings.

The common introduction of: 'Su-metal death, Yui-metal death, Moa-metal death and we are Babymetal death' its all a word play. The verb 'to be' in Japanese is 'desu' and it spells really close to english word 'death'. So when she says 'Su-metal desu' she means 'I'm Su-metal' but with the word play of 'desu' sounding like 'death'.

Nice reaction guys and you spotted the lore of Su being reborn as our Goddess . I was laughing like hell at your faces when the cross come on and they crucified Su . This song as opener is great especially in a stadium and the beat starts going fast . Huge circle pits opening up everywhere it just gives you goosebumps and chills. Pity last time it was played was 2017 at Legend S where they crucified Su again on a big circle with V anď an inverted V to signify 20 in Roman numerals and flames all around her very epic .
