That’s weird. My owners manual says to put the spring against engine wall and rubber gasket to the outside, against the cover. Even shows a diagram of such. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Thank you so much. I'm sorry for the late reply. I took 3 months off work to take care of my dog who didn't have much left in him. I wanted to spend as much time with him as I could. He died 2 weeks ago. I live in the middle of a forest with no Internet and have to ride my quad or snowmobile for 30 minutes to get to wifi. I watched a few oil changing videos that would drag in forever and that annoyed me and was my inspiration for this video. I'm making another one because I have a few more things I want to say anfld feel I can improve on it. I also have an air filter and differential oil video that I'll put up when I get back to civilization. Thanks again :)

nice and to the point oil change on your machine! Only thing, is that a 10w40 oil in the cold weather is really not a good idea. In HOT or warm weather no issues, but in the cold...no ideal. I'd stick with 10w30 or 5w30 (if approved for your machine). NEED more oil flow...and running a thicker oil...is not a good way to do that...IMHO.
@TheGreatBeard
@TheGreatBeard 5 жыл бұрын
Thank you! My goal was to be straight to the point because other similar videos that I saw were terrible and almost unwatchable so I appreciate you! You're probably right about the oil, but what I used was recommended by the Honda dealer where we bought the machines. (I have since switched to the Honda brand). I looked at the manual and it has a graph that shows what viscosity to use in what weather temperature ranges and it looks like we're in the ball park. I don't ride my quad in cold weather anymore and this video was filmed just a couple of weeks after we got the the machines so we just wanted to ride! However after I bought my snowmobile last fall, the quad as taken a back seat when it comes to riding in the colder weather. The few times I do take it out is when it's not much colder than -4 or -5 degrees Celsius because I get MUCH colder when riding the quad compared to a snowmobile! I have filmed an update to this video that will be better in terms of video and sound quality with more details and should be about the same length if I can find the time to edit it. Thanks for watching! :)

One thing I learned the hard way with oil changes is NEVER INSTALL THE DRAIN PLUG OR OIL FILTER COVER WITHOUT A TORQUE WRENCH! Stripped the threads on my engine casing and ended up having to use a self-tapping oversized bolt which is not ideal but works. Then I stripped my oil filter bolts because I over torqued them the previous time and have to drill them out now. Won't ever do that again thats for sure!
@TheGreatBeard

Absolutely. I know I did this without a torque wrench but is highly recommended. I didn't have one when making this video but I bought one and used for later oil changes.

There is no reliable torque wrench that goes that small in toque specks that is affordable. a 5-to-100, 180# wrench is not accurate on the low end.

@TheGreatBeard
@TheGreatBeard 4 жыл бұрын
That's awesome! What year and how do you like them? We have two 2017's here. You don't have to change the o-ring everytime. It should last a few years but inspect it everytime. Its good to have a spare in case you see damage to it. In 2 years of riding mine with almost 6000 kilometers and regular oil changes my o-ring looks good so far. I did notice some signs of wearing on my brothers Rancher so we'll probably change his in the spring. I would highly recommend changing the drain washer every time though.

@TheGreatBeard
@TheGreatBeard 5 жыл бұрын
Yeah, you should just turn the key. Doing it the way I did it here discharges the battery and as far as i know (maybe i'm wrong) doesn't harm anything but generally I just turn the key to shut it off.Thanks for the reply!
@spyder000069
@spyder000069 5 жыл бұрын
Using the kill switch on any bike to turn it off is completely safe. Warnings in manuals about using the key instead is because many people are too stupid and forget they used the kill switch and then either leave the key on (draining the batttery or leaving the bike in a unsafe state for a child to jump on and go) or they do shut the key off but later comeback and try to start the bike and then drain the battery while it won't start because the kill switch is still enabled. So as long as you don't fall into the dummy category feel free to use the kill switch as often as you like. :^)

@TheGreatBeard 5 жыл бұрын
It's easy! :) I actually filmed another (better and more in depth) video for the Honda Rancher 420 oil change but I haven't had the time to edit it yet. My biggest bit of advice is to not over tighten the oil drain plug and the 3 filter bolts. People tend to do this and they end up regretting it. I highly recommend changing the washer that goes with the drain plug every time you do the oil change because it's a crush washer and if you don't change it, you might have to tighten the drain bolt more to avoid leaking, and could cause you to strip the threads. For the oil filter cover, if the the "o" ring looks sketchy, change it out because if it's worn, you might find yourself having to tighten the 3 bolts even more and could strip the threads as well. It might seem weird, but you really just need to make filter cover bolts and engine drain plug snug and it's fine. You can get the "o" ring at Honda for about they usually give me the drain plug washer free, but they may charge you a dollar or less. Thanks for watching and if you have any questions, do not hesitate. I've done about 6 oil changes total so far with the two Honda Rancher's 420's that we have.
@NoNo-ol1ix
@NoNo-ol1ix 6 жыл бұрын
Hey dude did you know that you don’t have to change the o rings for like 4 to 5 years
@TheGreatBeard
@TheGreatBeard 6 жыл бұрын
Changing the filter means you have to remove the cap along with the O ring. The more often you do that, the faster it wears. No way I'll get 4-5 years out of an O ring considering how often I ride my Rancher and how often i'll have to do oil changes.

@TheGreatBeard 4 жыл бұрын
@@stephenpetronsky9468 I don't know what to tell you, but I assure you I am correct based on both my Honda dealer and user manual that says the same. Also, I can see it's correct by checking the full line as demonstrated in the video. We also have a 2019 Foreman 500 and it actually takes less oil compared to the Rancher 420. I forgot the exact amount the Foreman 500 takes but it's something like 3 litres compared to 3.6 litres for the 420. I'm actually reading the 2017 Rancher 420 manual as I type this and it says "3.8 US qt (3.6 litres)"

@TheGreatBeard 6 жыл бұрын
the "break in" period of this quad is 150 km. We passed that in under 3 days. Spending more money on synthetic is just wasting money because during the break in period you're not supposed to take it to high speeds or accelerate quickly, just take it nice and easy. All the benefits of synthetic goes to waste during the break in period. The next oil change (according to the book) is supposed to be done in another 1000 km. It won't take us very long to reach that and by that point we might consider synthetic and if not, we'll do it at the oil change after that one because it will start to get colder again and the benefits of synthetic will be noticed during winter riding.
