thank you so much for this. never did an oil change before in any of my car. the Topsider is really cool. saved me $$$ from going to the stealership. i was also surprised that i was able to put 6 qts of oil. manual says 5.8 qts. probably the Topsider sucked every inch of oil in there.

Really appreciate the factual information when you mention that draining from the bottom actually leaves about half a qt of oil. People always tell me doing this pump drain is bad because you don't get all of it. Now I can tell them other wise and actually get this pump and do my own oil changes instead of paying mb $175..

Thank you so much. Excellent commentary and explanation. I have a 2005 CLK 200K (supercharger) and have been looking for ages to find out how to do this. My oil filter is in the same location. Although my car is regularly serviced by a MB main dealer, I still like to change the oil between their services. I see it as a cheap insurance policy to preserve the engines life.

Use it twice and it pays for itself the oil extractor.In Canada a oil change at dealership would cost about $35 +oil and filter.Also try teflon tape where the items screw together to get a even better seal.I would also change the clip valve to a regular oil valve.

Excellent video. Very will done. On the M272 V6 the Topsider tube extends at least three inches past the mark from the dipstick, but you can easily feel when it contacts the bottom of the pan. I don't think Mobil 1 will hurt the gaskets as it has an additive to condition seals and swell them slightly so they seal better. The thin stamped threaded area's are the weak point of the Topsider. If they would re-engineer that to be more sturdy it would be an even better product.

I use a 12v pump that costs about $25 to get the oil out. It takes about 5 or 6 minutes if the oil is hot (not too hot though). I've used it over 20 times on all my cars (kids cars too) with no major problems. The bottom of the pump leaks a few drops of oil but no big deal. Years ago I purchased the blue vacuum pump thing used in this KZfaq but only used it once with mixed results (too much hand pumping as I recall). I like the 12v pump better but that's just my opinion.

I use this thing on my Honda. You can reach the oil filter, just by reaching about a foot past the front bumper. No jacking the car up, no drain plug/gasket... just suck the oil out, change the filter, refill, and go. Boom. I used to be the type to torque the drain plug to exactly 17 ft-Lbs, etc. My knees and back are too old for all that crap now. With this thing, I can change the oil basically without tools.
@phineassmith
@phineassmith 6 жыл бұрын
The tube doesn't have to go all the way down the oil dipstick tube. The dealers use a system where they plug an adapter into the oil dipstick tube that creates an air tight seal and use the tube which extends to the bottom of the pan to extract the oil. I've used a topsider for many years doing exactly what you illustrate in the video but all you need to do is get a cone shaped rubber grommet that creates an air tight seal and the dipstick tube become the last part of your extraction tube.

It´s really a good idea to label the oil filter of an engine with the word "turbo"... so that everybody will find it
@JohnDoe-gm5qr
@JohnDoe-gm5qr 8 жыл бұрын
I can just imagine some idiot who doesn't know better thinking that is where the turbo is hahaha. Maybe that should be labeled oil filter. I am sure there was a reason for the way they labeled it but I can not think of that other than to tell the mechanic that there is a turbo under the hood somewhere but that was a rather odd place to put that.

Two mods that make that oil extractor the best are an inline ball valve from the intake side (to replace the pinch) and replacing the hosing with semi-rigid clear tubing from your local hardware store. It allows you to get the oil really warm and speed up the process.
@Deadstk
@Deadstk 7 жыл бұрын
Great ideas. Replacing the larger diameter, included tubing, with a similar ID semi-rigid clear tubing would allow you to extract hotter oil, which would speed up the process. Curious, where can you purchase an inline ball valve from-anywhere online?

Mlowery85 You're right and I noticed that 99,9% of guys making oil changes on KZfaq only speak about viscosity and never speak about the certification. That's surprising because certification is more important than viscosity grade. Recently I saw an oil change of a recent Opel with an oil without the Dexos2 certification. Bye bye engine. So it's nice to care about viscosity but it's even better to respect the oil certification mentioned by the car manufacturer.

Are you able to give me your opinion on the quality vs cost comparision of the C250 over an economic car like a Corolla? Gret video. I recommend placing the Topsider on the ground. Not only does it create a siphon which aids in the extraction, it prevents the hose from kinking. I find that the extension and univeral swivel are unnecessary. I also throw the hose in a Ziploc freezer bag when im done. Fast! Zero mess! Time to beat 22 mins.

I think it's better to use oil extractor for low ground clearance car, rather than risking your life with jacks or ramps. Little bit left over difference with draining should be no problem, just change the oil filter with every oil change. But if the oil filter is located below, then there is no point to use extractor.

All that I have done for years is leave the vacuum tube connected and use some type of clip and clip it to something high, like a shelf, let all the oil in the tube drain into the canister. After 10 minutes or so I disconnect the tube and lid, remove the gasket and clean it of all oil residue and store separately in a small plastic bag. Once the Topsider is empty I simply put the supplied plane lid back on and store everything back in the original box.

Why would you tape the hose when the dipstick sits 3 inches off the bottom of the pan?
@Deadstk
@Deadstk 8 жыл бұрын
+Ronald Boutan Taping it just gives you a basis for how far you can stick the extractor drain tube down. On some cars you can actually push it in too far and it actually makes a U-turn and starts coming back up from the bottom of the pan. With the tape you have some indication about how far down you need to go.
@gregrobsn
@gregrobsn 2 жыл бұрын
The instructions tell you to go 2 inches beyond the length of the dip stick. That’s right where it hits the bottom. Any more and the end of the tube will turn and it will bind when you try to pull it out. I know. I did that the first time I used the Top Sider.

That is what I do on my 2006 Jetta 2.5. I even do it with the oil nice and HOT. For me it is a good idea to drain it from underneath the car anyhow since the filter is down there somewhere. It is one of those cartridge filters. I always change it hot and remove the drain plug and have never been burned by the oil. Just remove the plug slowly or even turn it with a socket on an extension. You do not have to use a ratchet with the extension unless the plug is not loose enough to turn. The extension will allow you to drain the hottest motor oil safely if you are not a klutz. If the plug falls in the oil just get it out with a magnet on a stick and clean it off with a rag of paper towel. Maybe it is just me but oil extractors suck.

No way! Extraction is really the best method and is now preferred by Mercedes Service Centers worldwide. I don't like the extractor he used though.. the plastic clear ones are better so you can see the amount extracted. This comes in handy to see not only the amount of oil extracted but also possibly the amount of oil burned between changes. Again, the extraction method is best on cars which have the oil filter on the top side of the motor. If you have to get under the car anyway it's not that big a deal to just drain it traditionally. My E350 Coupe is super low (starter ramps, then regular ramps, plus all the damn splash guards you have to remove. Extraction saves a lot of time. Regards

The advantage of this system is you don't get pieces of sh.. and pieces of dead animals on your face while changing the oil.

Except, that's not at all what happens during a typical oil change. You're under the car for all of 30 seconds to get the bolt removed, all the particles that are denser than the oil are also the first ones exiting the engine.

"...under the car for all of 30 seconds.." REALLY First of all, most late-model Mercedes sedans sit about 6 inches off the ground so you're not going to simply crawl underneath and undo the oil drain plug. Not only that, you’re not going to drive them up on your typical DIY vehicle ramps because the car sits too low and the pitch on these ramps is typically too steep, causing the car to scrape if you attempt to drive them up most ramps. So you're left with having to jack the car up-that’s a hassle. Oh, I should also mention that you’ll be loosening 4 to 6 8mm bolts to remove the splash shield in order to gain access to the drain plug-additional hassle. So what may seem like a simple job of reaching under the car to undo a drain plug is really an impractical pain in the @ss for most people doing a DIY oil change on a Mercedes-Benz. But I guess you’d have to actually own one to know this.

Try changing the oil on a hell cat or 370z or G37 there are like 20 bolts underneath ....really no big deal take about 10 minutes to do it right. Plus I own a 370z and its much lower than the C250 I own ...I own race ramps and it goes right up no clearance issues...rhino ramps will work too.... do it right you get to the drain plug. These vacuum methods are for lazy people....seriously.

nice of you to do this but the oil extractor thing is a waste. Just remove the skid plates and drain the oil from the pan like you would normally do. Geezz................
