Oil cooler issue sidelining new Indiana State Police Dodge Durango vehicles

The Dodge charger wasn’t any better. When I worked for the Texas Department Of Public Safety fleet operations division, the camshaft and lifters would go out on the 5.7 L hemi left and right. It got so bad that our auto shop was repairing or replacing four engines a month. Chrysler ended up extending the warranty out to 150,000 miles because of this. The younger troopers loved the dodge charger because it was fast. We ended up putting quite a few high mileage Ford Crown Victoria‘s back in service because of this. The Crown Vic was significantly slower, but it was a tank, and damn near impossible to break!

A friend of mine is a mechanic for a Dodge dealer. He says he's put so many new transmissions in new Dodge trucks that he's got it down to about an hour!

@SkylineGTR_VRC15 күн бұрын
The P71 isnt viable anymore. Very reliable but its just too slow. There are several videos out there where a P71 would try to chase something like a minivan and the minivan would get away in minutes. In one of these instances, a P71 was trying to chase a kidnapping suspect who had a kidnapped girl in the car, and the suspect got away within a minute of the chase starting.

@@SkylineGTR_VRC Maybe the officer wasn’t a good driver? I don’t think an Explorer, Durango, Charger, or Tahoe would do any better.
@SkylineGTR_VRC14 күн бұрын
@@chiefearnest1450 Drivers are definitely a factor but these newer cars are just too powerful and too nimble. Crown Vics only make about 190 horsepower to the wheels. Pair that to the atrociously long 4 speed automatic transmission tailored for highway cruising and the vehicles 2 ton curb weight, and they're just not quick enough or fast enough. Tahoes and Durangos are the same story, which is why you only see Explorers, Tauruses, and Chargers leading a police pursuit nowadays. The new Explorer with the turbo 3.0 V6 can do 150 mph and it has a 0-60 quicker than most sports cars, even when fully loaded with police equipment. The Charger is....well....a Charger, shouldn't need to explain why they're popular for pursuit vehicles.

Oil coolers can cause this as well. Ford had big issues with this for a very long time on many model vehicles. Nissan also had two big bouts of this problem over the years. GM had this problem for a short time in the 60's but has not been a big issue since.

They don't address that the little bit older Durangos have the Hemi V8. The brand new vehicles are using the new Hurricane I6 3.0 engine.
@brandongarnold15 күн бұрын
These Durangos are Hemis with an added oil cooler as part of the special service package. Hurricane engines started getting put in to 2025 model vehicles. The 2025 Durango has not been released. Plus you do realize It may be 6 months to a year if not longer from the time of purchase to the time these are put in service. The added lights and accessories still need installed after delivery. Those Durangos would most likely be 2023 models if not 2022 models.
@JRobert11111115 күн бұрын
@@brandongarnold You make a good point these are not the latest model. With so many Chargers with this engine it's a shame there are so many problems now. I guess it's back to GM and Ford for their vehicles.
