The fact that you take care to clean up the inside of the oil pan and some other things like replacing the oil pick-up tube Oring is a plus. A lot of mechanics would not take the time. Good job.

I agree. These days, most techs don't do something thoroughly. He could've just through it in the parts washer and changed the gasket, but he even changed the o-ring that was not in the original scope. I really appreciate his work.

After watching hours of your work on video, I have a better appreciation for auto mechanics! It's not that I had a low opinion--I just never really considered it. It's just I never really knew and understood what a skill and an art it is to do what mechanics do. I hope there are lots and lots of mechanics that have ethics like those you demonstrate. I've been using the same shop for 25 years, the owners are super conscientious. Car owners ship their cars from Asia, Europe, and South America to have these men work on them. Mechanical restorations are their specialty, and when I'm at their shop it's always a treat to see what they're working.

I love the classical music you play during these videos! I have an '01 suburban, same engine size. I feel like I'm learning a lot about my vehicle and others. (I also have an '02 pt cruiser, '97 dodge caravan, and a '79 mg midget. There's not many videos that help with the midget. Lol.) Thanks for sharing your videos! I look forward to watching them every morning when i wake up.

Actually these videos can serve as enhanced service history documentation for the customer. When selling a vehicle I would love to be able to show that someone with Ray's attention to detail was the one who worked on it.

I really appreciate you Ray. You show that not all mechanics are not scum and schemers. How you took the time to take care of all of the little things on this job vs just changing the gasket really shows that you care. I also love that you don't bash brands. This may sound small, but the way you thoroughly cleaned off that oil pan says so much to me about the pride you take in your work. That, my friend, is the hall mark of a great mechanic. Nothing like seeing a shiny underside when you get your truck out the shop. Kudos to you dear sir.

I've noticed that Ray works on customer cars like he would work on his wife's car. attention to detail and replacing stuff when he was into a certain point whether it was bad or not. Of course if the customer approves of the repair.

I love watching you work. You are a highly educated man, I can tell that you could probably have done some medical career, but chose to fix cars rather than people. Mechanic is a smart man's profession because you need to think ahead and use all of your experience to solve the 100 simple problems you have on each job... I am like you. I am a health professional and can't wait for the weekends to get under my vehicles and mechanical toys. Party on Ray!

im surprised you dont have surface cutter to cut those rivets of. and i appreciate your wprk and attention you have fpr it.ive been retired for quite a few years and remember that in the years we had to burn out the pest tube with the torche when we did pan gaskets.

If you think that oil pan was funky, you weren't wrenching before synthetic oils were commonplace in cars. I worked on a boatload of engines that were so sludged up with crud, I had to use a drill to open up the oil passages so that oil would drain down through the heads and block.

Stan S, Was Pennzoil the worst oil back in the day? I helped a friend change a van engine in the 1980's, because the old one was shot. He used Pennzoil exclusively, and that engine was sludged up so bad. Oil of today is so much better!

@@christophermeyer6414 I pulled a Mitsubishi 4G54 engine down with less than 200,000km on it. The owner had used Castrol GTX oil in it since new. The oil galleries were so bad, I had to acid bath the crank & block. The rings were badly gummed up, they needed acid bath to free them. Castrol GTX is still sold today. I won't use that rubbish in my mower engine. When I rebuilt that Mitsi engine, I filled it with Fuchs oil. 15W40. I use NULON 15W40 in my own car.

Any oil will sludge up that badly if the owner rarely/never changes it.

@@mphilleo the Mitsi engine I spoke of had regular servicing. Castrol oils are rubbish. I change the engine oil in my car twice a year, trans every 2 years, diff every 3 years, hydropneumatic suspension oil the same time as the diff oil, coolant every 4 years, & brake fluid every 2 years. Hub bearings washed & greased every 2 years, as are the rear hub pivot bearings. Power steering fluid is changed every 2 years, along with the filter. No grease nipples on my car. I use NULON lubricants in my car regarding oils & fluids. I use Penrite moly grease for the bearings.

Ray, When I sold my 2004 Suburban (I shouldn't have) it had 138000 on it and still didn't leak a drop of oil. Never even had to do a brake job on it. GOOD automobile. Sad to say the new ones aren't built near as well.

You can cause a rear main seal leak by bolting to the transmission before the rear main seal cover because it will pull on it down instead the pan up to the cover.

Every time Ray puts a dab of silicon on the transition seam between the gasket surfaces, I hear "A little dab will do ya" in my head. It's programmed into my brain from the Brylcreem commercials way back in the 1960's. Yes, I'm that old.

VERY smart on changing the o ring. Professional cleaning the oil sump too. Definitely taking pride in your work. That’s an issue on these trucks most don’t know about. It’s the red o ring btw. There’s two bolt holes but factory only uses one. You can order a billet girdle and it supports the o ring much better. Torqued to 106” lbs.

My Trans Am started with having the rear main seal. By the time I was done I replaced that seal, oil pan gasket, p/u tube, both lower control arms, power steering rack, both hubs, and sway bars. After all of that I forgot to change out the “barbell” behind the rear main seal cover.

Well done. You are like me. I can't reassemble anything without cleaning and replacing those little things like the o rings. My mind just won't let. Maddening sometimes. I don't care about the extra time it takes.

My rule is that unless a part is cheap and easy to get to, when you open up something you replace everything you just gained access to (within reason of course). If you don't "Murphy's Law" will be invoked and you'll be taking it all apart soon thereafter to replace something you left behind the first time. It's a mistake you'll only make once, trust me for I know, having learned it the hard way.

I'll be doing the suspension on my ram1500 in the next couple weeks. I'm guessing uppers and lowers. Got a clanking noise and bump cover from the floor and brake pedal area over bumps and hard stops

Anybody remember the old 3M yellow glue? My dad was a heavy equipment mechanic and on the weekends he would take me to work with him. My primary jobs were cleaning parts and scraping gaskets. It was a common practice to use the yellow glue to seal gaskets. That stuff is really hard to get off.

Another excellent choice! Ole Symphony No. 5 by my boy Ludwig. In my music class, we used to call him Wiggy Von B. or just Wiggie for short. That's a faster version of No. 5 than I'm used to. I kinda like it. And then another Wiggie classic, sonata No. 14 more commonly known as Moonlight Sonata. I can play MS on piano, guitar, and cello.
