Oil Pressure Switch Replacement (2006 Dodge Ram 1500 SLT 4.7L V8)

Another oil pressure switch, sensor, sending unit video, but hopefully it will help somone out with the same vehicle model. The OEM part number for my truck is shown in the video. Make sure to check that any original parts (or those that supersede the original) or aftermarket parts are compatible with your vehicle before replacing.
Some additional notes relating to the replacement:
I purchased the Duralast pressure switch at Autozone. If purchasing a pressure switch socket at the store, go ahead and unbox the switch to check the fit before buying. The original pressure switch socket I purchased did not quite fit and I ended up getting another that did fit even though both sockets were 1 1/16".
When removing the original pressure switch, some oil did come start to come out of the port. Not a lot but enought to note. It could have been related to cranking the truck prior to doing the replacement but worth mentioning as a quick replacement (leave the old partially installed and have the new ready to swap out) will lead to less of a mess.

So I just saw this, after my AutoZone trip. I've got an 06 ram 1500 slt 4.7 so was pleased to find this video within the first minute of searching for one. After watching it I am siked you performed this fic and it seems relatively straight forward. Then, you mention to not forget and buy the switch socket. And now I am unfortunately headed back to AutoZone. Exactly the video I needed though Thanks for sharing

I just changed my oil pressure switch two weeks ago and it fixed my 04 Dodge 1500. Also my air bag light came on and all I did was put the key to Start the truck in a key hole on the passenger side air bag on the dash turn it off and back on and crank it up and it solved my air bag light problem

One quick question is do you have to drain your oil first, or can you have your current oil still in it while your changing out the Sensor?

I did not have to drain the oil. Probably a good idea to let the vehicle set for some time and have the new switch ready to swap out quickly to limit the amount of mess in case.

I have a 2005 dodge ram 1500 4.7 and I had the head gaskets replaced beforehand I never had a problem with the oil pressure sensor but now I do. I have bought 4 different ones for my truck and it still drops to zero at idle. I have oil and pressure but it keeps kicking on the check gauges light and drops to zero. I was told to keep driving it and replace the sensor everytime I do an oil change...that's pretty pricey in my world...what info can you help me with? It's driving me crazy

Unfortunately I don’t have any suggestions for your situation because it is beyond my knowledge/experience. Hopefully someone else can comment and help you out. A new sensor every oil change does seem a bit much.

Hi ctrichell. Thanks for reaching out. I decided not to do a video of the airbag light troubleshooting because I didn’t feel I had the proper training and knowledge to instruct others on the safety risks associated with the repair. The diagnostic reader was able to identify the issue but there were too many precautions for me to feel comfortable putting something out there for others that could put them at risk.

What is the difference between pressure sensor and pressure switch?

This truck technically has an oil pressure sending unit, which sends an analog signal to the pressure gauge. An oil pressure switch only turns on or off the oil pressure light on the dash. An oil pressure sensor will send a digital signal to the oil pressure gauge on the dash. All three terms are sometimes used to describe the same thing.

How many ftlbs of torque for reassembling?

Unfortunately I don’t recall the spec and probably should have covered this in the video. Definitely don’t crank down with everything you got, but pretty sure you know this since you inquired about the torque setting. Sorry I can’t help out here but the torque setting is a good and important thing to consider.

Thank you so much for the video! Do you think that this is an easy fix or hard fix? We are planning on getting a 05 1500 dodge ram soon and we need to replace the oil sensor but my dad is worried about it being an expensive and long fix.

If you are able to get the correct socket for the oil sensor it is a pretty easy fix. Getting the sensor clip off was the hardest part of it. Some pressure switch sockets vary slightly so make sure it fits before proceeding. Disconnecting the battery before doing the work probably isn’t a bad idea. All together I think it cost me a little over $25.

@@morbidthebutcher mine has sat at this spot since owning the truck and literally only moved when the check gages light came on. Then it sunk down all the way. But besides that, optimistically because of this video I'm going to replace mine and get that gage sitting right where it should.

@@thegatesofsleep it was pretty straightforward. Just see if you can pick up the oil switch socket. Or else, you can use a twelve spline socket (forget which size but it's a big one) to loosen/tighten the oil pressure sensor.

@@jg_bikes I replaced the oil switch shortly after this comment. Oil had been passing through the rubber seal. Oil pressure was ideal for 2 months after. A Couple days ago it goes straight up to high now before I even turn over the engine. Maybe I got a bad replacement part. Better than it reading 0 like it was before though lol.
