Only Mr.Jimi could make his guitar sound like a war ...with bombs whistling down, and the shriek of mayhem. Viet Nam was the catalyst for the version. As for the crowd...it was early morning at the end of 3 amazing and I am sure exhausting days. Many people had already left Yasgur 's farm. For those still there it was not necessarily drugs. It was astonishment and awe on their faces when Mr.Jimi started playing. Incredible times they were indeed. !

Yes, Im a Huge Hendrix fan...but he went in the Army to avoid jail time for joy riding in a stolen vehicle. & he got booted out of the service under ( honorable) conditions. There were lefty guitars just crazy rare also its Hendrix in 69 if he really wanted a lefty FENDER would have pumped those things out left and right.. Jimi preferred rightys upside down because of the Pickups being in reverse and giving him a different sound. Jimi tried left guitars and didn't like them much unless they were modded but never used one on stage. He also liked the volume and tone knobs closer to his pick hand.

Here's an example of how vast the distinction can be between who is best and one's tastes: I believe SRV was the best electric blues guitarist in history, and I don't enjoy hearing him play. He's brilliant, just not my style. SRV only played electric blues. It was all he wanted to do. Hendrix is the best guitarist because he was more than an electric blues master - much more.

And let's not forget that this was the 'counter-culture'. This rendition of the Star-Spangled Banner is for them. All the noise and fucked-upness of this rendition represents the grieve over the war in Vietnam (you can hear the bombs dropping). This is a 'woke' version of the anthem. Eyes are wide open. There's no literal reference to the civil rights movement, but I've always heard it in there as well anyhow. All of the pain of that time expressed through this performance.

Son, your reaction is priceless! Believe me, I had the same reaction 52 years ago when I watched Jimi play live 3 times in 1968!. He died in 1970, at the age of 27 from an accidental overdose of sleeping pills. He was placed in an ambulance sitting up with his head back, and was allowed to choke to death on his own vomit!!! No charges were ever brought against the ambulance attendant. He was my idol, and I was lucky enough to meet him. He was so cool and laid back that he seemed like a visitor from another dimension. I love Prince and Stevie Ray, but never forget that Jimi was a Prophet, and they were his disciples!

Hi Mr. Video... so true story: I found this video several years ago. My elderly Mom (born 1924) asked me what that was. I showed her on my desktop monitor. She sat quietly as we watched. At the end, I looked up to find her right hand over her heart and tears streaming down. I asked her what was wrong. She tearfully said, “it was so beautiful, I wish your Daddy had heard this “. She was so impressed by his talent and interpretation of our National Anthem. My Dad served in WWII in the Air Force. Jimi Hendrix love the guitar and loved his country. Unfortunately he also loved alcohol and drugs. A fatal mix of wine and 18 sleeping pills brought a tragic end to his genius. No one takes 18 sleeping pills by accident. We will never know why, at 27, this man would be so reckless. We can only appreciate his rock n’ roll heaven. Thank you! ❤️

He played behind his his back, with his teeth, and he was the first to do that shit. Do yourself a favor, and watch some Jimi Hendrix video. Monterrey Pop Festival in 67, California. Stockholm Sweden in 68, and a festival in Atlanta , along with Woodstock. Oh yeah, Hendrix learned to play his guitar at 9 yrs old, and played it upside down. People slipping the Star Spangled Banner into their guitar solos was something that was still going on into the 80s- But it all started with Jimi. Jimi was scheduled to headline, and was supposed to have played the night before, but due to logistical difficulties caused by the way way bigger-than-expected crowd, Jimi didn't play until the morning of the third day. (They had to fly him to the stage in a helicopter) The show was supposed to have been over already, and many people had left the night before. The people who stayed had been tripping their balls off on LSD for two days, so they were pretty worn out by this time. There was a Woodstock movie, which was highlights of the major performers, which has long since been available on home video. There is also a special edition DVD of Jimi Hendrix's entire set. Both are worth checking out whenever you've got the time.

"Hendrix began to slyly use the music's own martial bombast to reflect the violence carried out under his nation's flag...turning the music into a literal interpretation of the lyrics: bombs bursting in air, rockets lighting up the night...the ugliness behind the American glory the song is meant to represent." ^The best description I've ever read of this rendition. Jimi was the last to perform at Woodstock, which ran overtime into Monday morning August 18th...you're seeing a crowd of people (which had shrunk significantly from the original half a million people) who spent the past 3 days high on peace, love, and music (and lots of LSD and weed) seeing a literal god perform. I can never decide between Jimi and Stevie as to who's my favorite. They're both it for me, just wish they had had a chance to play together😍 The 51st anniversary of Woodstock is coming up (August 15-18), you should definitely check out performances from Richie Havens, Santana (the full version of Soul Sacrifice, NOT the one where they cut out the drum solo), Sly and the Family Stone, Janis Joplin, Joe Cocker, Jefferson Airplane, Ten Years After...I could go on and on (clearly😂)✌🌻💜

Hendrix did such an amazing job.He was left handed and had to make his right handed guitar work for him. He was a Viet Nam war vet, who served in the 101st Airborne. No guitarist will never out do him, IMO. Unfortunately, he, as well as Janis Joplin, and Jim Morrison, was a member of The 27 Club. Those super talents all died when they were 27. But no one before or since has been able to top his version of The National Anthem, which he thought was beautiful. He did his version out of respect. He stood.

Mr. Video.... "The Earring" ??? Note the year was 69 , as usual Jimi was ahead of his time, it wasnt till 10 years later it came into fashion. It seems odd to me that as a Canadian that anyone would object to this version, I mean isn't the U.S. the land of the free where you can and are suppose to have free speech? I think it is beautiful, would love to see it played at the Super Bowl and see peoples reaction to it. You should also react to "Machine Gun" or "Who Knows" from his Band of Gypsies album.

What's up with the crowd is they're being treated to this amazing rendition live at sunrise during the Woodstock festival. Several DJs got fired for playing this veesion of the national anthem because station owners perceived it as a transgression against American values.

i was there ...answer yes ..... but Jimi played the anthem at like every performance anywhere it wasn't the first time ....the started this stuff when they took him to England and he'd do the Brit's God Save the Queen in feedback....so natural progression do our anthem , but it was to protest the war in Viet Nam

I credit this young man for even caring to delve into Jimi Hendrix. When young folks learn that hip hop or trap did not create music I consider that a win. Thank you, Mr. Video for diving deep. [P.S. - yes, those sounds were an interpolation of the sounds of bombs, jets and air raids. When Hendrix did this song Vietnam was at its height. It was an unjust war and we had to watch scenes on the nightly news of body bags on the battle field and airplanes full of military coffins being delivered to U.S. soil. It was traumatic, especially since the war was ultimately deemed senseless.]

After this song, he launched into "Purple Haze" and then what is called "Instrumental Solo" on the album. The solo is actually "Villanova Junction" and, given that man is imperfect, it is as close to perfection as mankind is capable of coming.

They make left handed guitars. Jimi liked right handed Strats because thats what he had for years. He was comfortable with the feel. Left handed ones would have felt odd to him. He didnt play with strings upside down. He restrung it correct for left hand playing.

Thank you for playing this. I was one who requested as well. And it was beautiful... not only beautiful, but profound. When Star Spangled Banner was written way way back in the beginning of US history ... we were getting thrashed by the English in this land. We vowed as long as our flag was still standing we would not surrender. It was being held up by men. And as they got killed other men came in to hold up the flag. So , “by the dawn’s early light...our flag was still there..”. we did not surrender to England. But in the 1970s context we were in Vietnam killing them and Vietnamese killing us... it takes on a different feeling, right? No one wanted to be in that war. Lots of Americans died or came home jacked up, physically and mentally. Lots of Vietnamese and their families died too. It was nasty and brutal and cruel and drugged. So it has a whole different feeling and Jimi captured it. And the placement of this performance was at the end of the Woodstock movie where we heard this for first time. Thanks for playing!!

Loved your reaction. At the Woodstock Festival people were camped out there. So this was first thing in the morning and many of them were just waking up. And yes there was plenty of marijuana and LSD involved here. What a way to wake up. I wish I was there just to witness this I was born a year later in 1970. I love Jimi Hendrix especially live. Dick Cavett had a great talk show and was saying to the sponsors and viewers that Jimi Hendrix had a right to play the National Anthem his way, even more so than most Americans because he served in the military during a time when rich young men were being left out of the draft during the Vietnam War. I remember his talk show and the guests that were on it. though I was nine when Jimi died, his music touched my soul, which is ageless. There is a difference between an excellent musician and an artist gifted by God. As a baby flower child, he, singer, Odetta, Aretha, The Rolling Stones, Marvin Gaye, and others had a major effect on my appreciation of music. You understand because you are gifted.
