I just ordered one, it's the first knife in 10 years I've bought that isn't a Spyderco. The RAT's been on my radar for a long time and with Spyderco's prices going up and up I thought I'd finally give it a try.

I never appreciated Spyderco until I bought a Tenacious. Found it at Wal-Mart for $40.00. I wish I could upgrade it to a better version but their prices are insane

Got mine, man the fit and finish for the price is amazing. They pack all the quality they can in for the price point. Anybody who asks about a good do it all type folder for a budget price, I always recommend the RAT 1 or 2 depending on how much weight they can deal with.

I was skeptical about the original version of this knife, ended up getting it anyways, and for the price it ended up being one of my favorite knives I've ever owned. And I usually EDC ZT, Syderco, Benchmade, Emerson. So excited for the D2 version.

I love these knives...& the fact that they didn't jack the price up super high like others would have. D2 isn't enough to cause me to replace or augment my Aus8 version, but I'd find a nice stainless in the low $40s hard to resist. I'm envisioning a CPM154 or the like...I'd be all over it - thanks for a quick, but satisfying review!

OMG. I recently got a standard RAT 1 made out of AUS-8 steel and I put all my other knives away. This is the best non fixed knife I ever had. Even better than some fixed blades. And now you tell me there is a D2 version out there...OMG...unfortunately it seems those can't be purchased from outside of US. I hope I'll be able to get it somehow. Anyway, nice and helpful video as always. :-)

gideonstactical kma custom knives would be the best 1s you can have that are around 58-60 hrc,knive makers aren't always right about how they make their d2 knives,some can screw over buyers just to make the money,not all knife makers are like that,its good that you should be careful with what d2 knives you purchase online,some knife makers screw over customers & it happens alot,theres good d2 knives out there,d2 will always be the best knives & swords ever,theres people that purchased some d2s at the wrong places at the wrong time & they've happened to not be well made forged d2s & theres some that are good that are more legit that are the real d2s out there,the sharpening & edge retention differences with knives would be able to tell the difference of how they were designed,i own a couple of custom war d2 knives & 1095 carbon steel damacus big sheepfoot skinning knife & 1245 kabar tanto & their really good knives with the right steel crafted equivalences to them,my carbon steel knife collection will last me all my life,some knife maker sales people are honest & some aren't,people just have to be careful with how they purchase their knives.

It's nice to see some upgraded steel on the ol' Rat 1. My question is.....is it difficult to sharpen? I've heard that D2 can be a bit difficult to sharpen. I'm not a sharpening guru so I think I'd probably have some difficulty. Other than that, I'd like to have one. Thanks for the quick update. :)

Hey Arron I would love to see ya do a review on the Realsteel Bushcrafter II & their new Bushcrafter folder. I know there's a lot of vids on the fixed version but NOBODY, and I do mean this, no one puts a knife through its paces like you do on camera. You have long videos and imho it's necessary so people who are truly looking at a purchase can really see what they will be getting. Anyways the Realsteel Bushcrafter II is impressive, the pricepoint for D2 and the quality of its construction would be atleast $50 or more from other companies.

My one concern with D2 is the rush to prominence it had, which has led to some sloppy heat treats. Makers like Bob Dozier have great knives with superb blades, but the Benchmade D2 knives I've had have had such hard blades that chipping was a problem. A blade which holds its edge for two months worth of hard use is next to useless if the edge develops chips along its length. Looking at the missing parts of the blade edge under magnification, I saw very small but distinguishable crystalline fractures which worry me further. I think as long as D2 isn't hardened above about 58-59 it should be good, and I hope OKC does this with their blades.
@arcaneleaf4074
@arcaneleaf4074 6 жыл бұрын
Rodger Pitts I love my Ontario, but it chipped really bad when I hit against some rocky concrete. (Was cutting downward slip bang big chip.) So I agree with you saying d2 chips
@PerceptionVsReality333
@PerceptionVsReality333 Жыл бұрын
Ontario's D2 sucks, its too soft like pot metal & it doesn't hold an edge at all. D2 on ESEE zancudo/avispa is the same way. I ended up getting AUS-8 versions of those knives & they're so much better.
@random_eskimo_in_the_rockies
@random_eskimo_in_the_rockies Жыл бұрын
@@PerceptionVsReality333 Oh, absolutely. My opinion of AUS-8 has gone up quite a bit ever since I got an old Cold Steel Recon1 in AUS-8. It doesn't hold a great edge like the newer S35VN blades, but the edge is much more likely to roll and strop back into place than harder blades are. Even Survival Lilly decided to make her signature outdoors knife, the APO-1S from AUS-8..

Aaron, my biggest hangup with not just this knife but most folding knife designs these days is the very slim, blocky, 2-d handle designs. What I mean is that all these knife companies seem to make all their folders with extremely thin, flat, blocky handles, then slap some flat-ground handle scales on the knife and call it a day... This knife is just a prime example of 99% of everything else that's out there today. And while these super thin, blocky handle designs may be exactly what these knife companies are going for because of ease-of-carry, it actually makes these knives an absolute horrible experience to use. For example, I noticed you spliced in a clip of you carving a feather stick with this knife, and I have to imagine that this knife really started digging into your hand to the point that you would not be happy if you needed to do any serious amount of cutting. I know I did! After a good day's use, knives like these actually cause bruising to the palm near the webbing of my thumb and index finger. I've come to find these knives to be so intolerable that I've all but given up on carrying folding knives and have been full-timing a Mora Companion just because the handle is truly that...a "handle". These modern 2-d styled folding knives have horrible ergonomics IMO, and I can't seem to get past it. Interestingly enough, I seem to NEVER hear reviewers even give a second's thought to the knife's handle ergos when people do reviews; it blows my mind! Someone should really do a top ten list of most comfortable folders for prolonged use... I've already checked KZfaq, and nothing... I'm beginning to wonder if most people even actually ever "use" their knife... That, or maybe people just have a really broad definition of the word "USE"! Lol. What are your thoughts Aaron?
@Lars1540
@Lars1540 8 жыл бұрын
I just wanted to add something too. I'm not saying that I hate the knives, I'm saying I just really dislike the ergos and think it really takes away from the knife in an unfortunate way. For instance, I've had my eyes on both the Kershaw Link and Chris Reeve Sabenza 21 for a long time now, but after owning a myriad of folders with the same general handle sharpe/design, I just can't imagine that either of those knives would see much use if I bought them. It's too bad, because I think they both really look nice, but I know looks and ergos are two very different things!
@huejanus5505
@huejanus5505 8 жыл бұрын
I have a similar preference for the rounded handle slabs, much more ergonomic. The inexpensive ganzo lines of knives with the grooved g10 handles have very nicely shaped 3d handles. You may like those, i sure do.
@Lars1540
@Lars1540 8 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the tip! I'll have to look into those. I'm not very thrilled that Ganzo is basically a Chinese knock-off company though... Not sure if I can bring myself to support companies like that... >.>

Blade centering is perfect, pivot tension is exactly right, and the edge is very keen. I notice the logos are a bit different on the blade and clip as well. My previous knife had Randall logos on the blade and clip, this one has Ontario logos on it. Both look good. Thanks again for the tip.

Would you put this in your list of top sub-$50 EDC knives, or is the weight enough to keep it off the list?
@gideonstactical
@gideonstactical 8 жыл бұрын
I think weight would still keep it off the list. Still great, but I just don't Edc it around town that often. Give me the Sog Aegis at 3oz and deep ride clip and it will get carry 6 days a week, and this would get once a week. But that is me and my Edc system. The RAT (again for me) would for just as you saw in the video. A day at the range, a day hiking, camping, yard work that kind of stuff where I would want to take my really light Edc knives. Hope that helps.

Awesome! Now Ontario, try the D2 steel AND the G10 in the same knife! If they did that.....perfect. Dont really care about the AO.
