"Keep the fire burning." He lives it. Even at 79 he still kicks though he can't do it over his waist. He still does basics and forms with his class. He still does weights and conditioning, even if his old joints can only do partial reps. His hand techniques in his Kata still have Kime and some snap. Keep the fire burning. You can tell he smiles everyday, gets out of bed ready for the day. And enjoys his life.

Traditional Okinawan Ryu do not train for high kicks. Kicks are kept below waist to avoid the leg being grabbed.

I think what this shows more of, is the importance of having a passion, a hobby of sorts at any point in your life, without a "fire" you become numb, you become bitter, for him his fire is karate. I feel the fire doesn't represent keeping your skills up to date, it more so represents your ability to appreciate life itself. To find a resaon to keep going.

I just turned 40 a few months ago… up until a few weeks ago, I hadn’t taken a karate class in decades. I signed up for Shorin Ryu unknowingly and saw one kata that I fell in love with. I’m currently in my second week and it’s tough but awesome. What an amazing inspiration you are, sir. Thank you.

I met Sensei Yoshimasa Kazaku in 1962 in Memphis, Tennessee. Im walkin' down the street minding my own business, just walking on. Feelin' good. I walk around the corner, a man walk up, hit me in my chest, right. I fall on the ground, right. And I look up and it's Sensei Yoshimasa Kazaku. I said 'Sensei Kazaku?' and he said “Ooops, I thought you were some body else..”

I like Jiu Jitsu because it's practical and good for the mind - but hard on the body. I like boxing/and muay thai because they're good for the body but they can lead to brain damage. And karate is good for both mind and body - while still giving at least some level of self defense capabilities (depending on athleticism and style, it can be a lot of practical application).

Maybe boxing is 'good for the body' just like thai in that you get a good cardiovascular workout. But I don't think you see many old men competing in muay thai. I quit it quickly because abusing my legs like that did not make sense even in my prime. I have heard it leads to arthritis, which I cannot confirm but I don't believe in causing pain to improve.

@@miesvaillanykyisyytta3252 Good decision. Many martial artists who abuse their bodies when they are young suffer from many injuries and pain in their old age. You feel tough when you're young but that changes as you age.
