82-year-old, 10th-dan Yoshimasa Matsuda Sensei is a highly respected Okinawan karate master. In this special interview he talks about learning karate as a young boy, competing in karate, judo and Okinawan sumo, effective training, the wisdom of his teachers, and his own philosophy on life.
Enjoy the video and let us know in the comments what's your favorite piece of wisdom from the interview.
Sensei: Masters of Okinawan Karate is a documentary series about the amazing martial arts teachers living on Okinawa, the birthplace of karate. It is completely free to watch on KZfaq, anywhere in the world! Series One has more than 1,000,000 views and a fan community of 30,000+ on Facebook.
Learn more about the project here and how you can help here:
travel67.com/the-karate-maste...
GOALS OF THE SERIES
1. Document the stories of Okinawan karate masters and their philosophy on life and their martial arts practice.
2. Record in the highest quality possible. Ideally 4K or 8K, RAW, multi camera, multi audio
3. Store the original data as an archival record.
4. Transcribe and translate the recordings to spread knowledge of Okinawan martial arts, history and culture.
5. Make the videos available for free online via KZfaq, and on Bujin.tv so that anyone, anywhere can see them.
The documentary series grew out of the Karate Masters Portrait Project which began in 2012. The portrait project allowed amazing access to the sensei, but it was only Chris Willson and James Pankiewicz who got to hear their stories. The documentary series is a way for us to share that unique knowledge with the international karate community, and to archive aspects of Okinawan culture before they disappear.

What a man, so youthful and full of energy. He would of been a beast at 30. He had me in tears with “strong for my father” As a shorin ryu practitioner, I took a lot away from that video, even the bunkai for Naihanchi shodan. His sensei’s conditioning made him strong. I hope I can meet this man one day. Even his outlook inspired me. I would love and interview with Nakazato Eishou! from a Shorin ryu style - Nakazato Karate dojo, he would be in his 80’s now. He was in your book Chris! A Video would be magic too.

Movement should be as small as possible, don't for get the krate side of wado is oknowen, and they definitely made krate to fight the japniness who came with long range weapons , but the real self defence part of krate is this Kata, there's nothing stopping any wado person lerning adding sanshin Kata , so we become more grounded ,it's logical thing to do ,if like U do know the history, and work made wado was totally japniness, Bodo jusisu kendo ,evading foot work , witch is great too , Iin the street it's not possible to move about , because you have not chosen to ground or fighting on , like the pinjaksilat ,the Indonesia art , you from beging prosum the ground is wet and slipy , so we do need do that in wado ,now we know the weakness , let cover it , ie wado becomes style for all season, it's why wado needs begin use more qwipment too, for confidence and light armer , to stay standing when four five people are on you ,slowly worrys the atacter s, , more sanario training , wado should remine first and for most a self defence , the rest is good sport or Kata performance, but it's not the real Perpus, that's back against the wall ,out numberd traing , train some time fully clothed, nice krate gi ok if on beach on sand ,like Okinawa, but iam from brumm too, train to get best out of the shoe you have on, and weapon, found or carry, I noticed rogger sensi had opening to head but aponant, should use it, we train that in traditional jujisu, witch is wado , too, you do need to train where you get a shin kick ,the pain if not used to it makes you stop ,moving that's no good, ie great the pace of mind I felt from wado, but need to add the real side ,so like switch can ,go right to it , this must be trained ,cos U don't want walk around on gard, not good for health ,but like some Fung fu and pinjaksilat, you the person the individual,as a word ,that your own and you keep it to your self, you use the word to go from passive person ,to bang self defence, agrasive mood ,in a flash , it's very much look over in western traing but ,it works get you self a trigger word ,it's hard if your in happy mood enjoying one self and bang ,you have a aggressive person on you ,if not trained it's so hard to switch fast enough,to saem Level as agreser, just ten minutes in each class ,try it, and put the pads on , wado is not done and dusted its up to us to make it work and evolve,
