Oklahoma Teachers Are Planning Their Own Walkout To Protest Low Salaries And Education Funding (HBO)

Teachers in Oklahoma intently watched as their counterparts in West Virginia went on strike earlier this month, and for good reason: Public schools in Oklahoma have seen the biggest cuts in the country in per-pupil funding, and their teachers rank near the bottom in average pay.
So, as the West Virginia strike continued, teachers and labor organizers in Oklahoma began coordinating their own demands to the state legislature, asking for a $10,000 raise for teachers, a $5000 raise for support staff and an additional $200 million in school funding to cover basics like textbooks and classroom supplies. If their demands are not met, the teachers plan on walking out of their classrooms on April 2.
The situation in Oklahoma was created, in large part, by tax incentives offered up by Governor Mary Fallin that benefitted the state’s oil and energy industries as well as tax cuts that disproportionally helped the top income bracket. Meanwhile, teacher salaries in Oklahoma have not budged in ten years, even as insurance and cost of living expenses have gone up. Things got so bad last year, that, in an effort to cut costs, roughly 20 percent of school districts in the state enacted a furlough cutting the school week down to just four days.
VICE News traveled to Oklahoma City to meet with Bonnie Green, an early childhood teacher and a 30-year veteran of Oklahoma schools, who now has to take on a second - and third - job, just to make ends meet.

We pay a shit ton of money for people to argue with each other in Congress. Then pay a "burger king" wage to the people who teach our children. If we keep this up our options will someday be homeschool or private school.

Being conservative and reading from the bible clearly shows this chick is clueless. People are still going to have abortions. And crime rates have dramatically dropped thanks to babies not being born into abject poverty. If they were to be born they'd be ignored and turn to crime.. So it's very clear, conservatives are clueless. They do more harm to society than good.

Regardless of your political affiliation, schools need to be funded and kids need a real education. Whether you vote Democrat, Republican, Independent...IT SHOULDN'T MATTER!! if this country continues to shit on those who help the most, those people will leave for other jobs or countries where they are better appreciated. This is just damn fucking sad.

no ringo , you are completely wrong. teachers get their education tuition paid for through partnerships with schools and their loans are pardoned. even more , 60k is more than what people with degrees in science working in a lab make . No, just no . we are not paying more taxdollars for teachers to get higher wages they don't deserve . Teaching is a job, it's called working for your dollar - if you don't like the pay then go learn a skill and get a higher paying job. the education system this past decade has lost its accreditation and less people are utilizing that resource. if anything teachers should be getting paid LESS and the requirements to become a teacher should be lowered to a high school diploma BECAUSE THATS ALL YOU NEED TO TEACH HIGH SCHOOL!

Teachers, support staff, and general education funding should get a raise because they are teaching us, the next generation in the world, to keep it running. If the education system fails, my generation fails because teachers can't teach us property because they don't have enough funds to educate us. You never know, one of my generation could become president one day or a representative of the state or anything political thing that set up laws or anything like that. It's important that schools get that type of funding. If we aren't property, the nation really fails. If schools can't teach us because they don't have the material to teach us. My school is doing the same thing. What I'm trying to say is, the school education system in Oklahoma needs to step up.

It's sad how it has gotten worse since this video was uploaded. Nothing good was changed, they just got less of a pay, and are bribing teachers to stay with phantom raises. People are getting hurt over this, and then they wonder why they have rebellion and quitting teachers. 20% of teachers quit after their first 5 years of teaching in this state. If you were to take a lawyer's starting pay and a teacher's starting pay in 1970 and compare them, there would only be a 2,000 dollar difference. If you do the same today, a lawyer would start at $160,000, and a teacher would start at $28,000 to $40,000 depending on the position. Students are suffering because a state wants to fund useless things and make excuses and promises for raises, supplies, and resources for learning. If they wanted us to have an education, then there would be no doubt of funding education before anything else.

As an resident of Oklahoma I agree teachers need a raise. However, walking out during the school year was wrong, as teachers you know exactly how hard that was for the students and families. Many students rely on the school meal programs for breakfast and lunch, when school was cancelled students went hungry. The strike also put parents in a terrible position with their jobs and finding alternate daycare options as well as the additional meal costs. Teachers have a union and THREE SUMMER months each year to negotiate for better working salaries and benefits. Striking for more money AFTER accepting the job (and what it pays) is not a good move.

I'm 22 making 60k a year in Oklahoma with an 2 year degree straight out of school as an Emergency Department RN with no debt, single, and no family to support. In one more year I can start doing contract work and make six figures. It's a shame that teachers that have 10 years under their belt are making less than me in this state.

Teaching is an easier, less stressful job. And you're probably working nights, weekends, and holidays. And you're working year round. Teachers don't do any of those things. You're contributing to your 401k, while teachers get a defined benefit pension. Huge difference. Disgruntled teachers can always quit their teaching jobs and retrain to become ER-RN's, but I don't see that happening.

Teachers are very well compensated for the "work" they do. Add up the total package (eight and a half month work year, no nights, weekends, or holidays- there's fifteen paid holidays BTW, and a pension...it's more than fair, except their "mobbed-up" unions keep telling them that they're being ripped off. And the politicians give them everything they want because they know teachers "block vote" for whoever's gonna give 'em the most free stuff.

I do agree, she should be paid more for her 30yr career. And have a nice pension to help with retirement. But for their medical, they should have been able to save up in the last 30+ yrs for emergencies, or maybe had insurance to cover it. Don't forget some people are just bad with money. I mean if she had a Prius for the past 11 years she would have saved around $16,000 in fuel. Look at the size of her house for crying out loud! In Canada, teachers get 41k-118k CDN depending on province/city and experience. Increases happen every 2-3 years. www.bctf.ca/uploadedFiles/Public/BargainingContracts/TeacherSalaryRankings2013-14brief.pdf

I'd say she and her husband are living quite well. Big brick house in a nice neighborhood. She's a teacher, not a business person. No hiring, training, or firing. No accountants, no IRS. Zero stress. Maintain a pulse, keep her shoelaces tied, and get paid. Teaching is a "show up" job. Teaching is an extension of adolescence, so in a sense, you never really have to grow up. Besides, she's got her time in. She can retire anytime she wants.

One good way to get better teachers would be to incentivise people to enter the profession with higher wages or the prospect of eventually earning higher wages. I’m studying to be an urban/resource management planner and that’s less than average starting salary I’ll be in line for and I live in a country where medical care is free to become certified as a planner here takes the same amount of study as it does for a teacher.

If these teachers can make more money in other full time jobs in the private sector, they should pursue those jobs and quit teaching. If the state cannot fill teacher positions, they will be forced to increase wages. If the teachers can't make more money in other jobs, they should be thankful for what they have. If they want more money, they need to invest in their own education to pursue a higher paying career. The more free the markets, the more easily they solve their own problems. If your pay is too low, it's your own fault. You made poor choices, or didn't try hard enough.

Here's a real rocket scientist idea; educate yourself before going to school. How long could it possibly take to look over the facts and stats? Complete cost of education; money due to the school, costs of books (and even computers), meals, room and board, and all other expenses - even factor in inflation and possibly one added semester. Once that total is added up, then divide how long it will take to repay every cent of it. Understand that regardless of which school one goes to; due to ANY type of loan - one might not be able to... Get any type of new car for a while, even with a 20%+ down payment. One may have considerable problems in getting a reasonable place to live; you might very well need a roommate. Your credit will be terrible, and that credit rating might just keep you from getting a job. Consider the major and the market. Will you have to move once you are done with school? Will you actually be able to secure a reasonable income career and then keep it? Conclusion for now... IF these people failed to properly do their research, exactly whos fault is it that they are stuck in their own economic downturn due to their own choices

Ronald C Krause Jr You’re reasoning is valid but look at the complete situation, every civilized and complex society has a lot of needs (education been a very important one of them the most important arguably) and to fulfill all of them is indispensable a diversified and well rounded workforce, and if the population decides to all go to the most economically rewarding options there’s going to ocurre a copy of things: you’ll have vital ares completely lacking, you’ll have an over saturated market and it will become unprofitable even with all your research, the society will become extremely unproductive because you don’t have a quality workforce in vital areas and you’ll need to outsource, import or completely neglect certain productive areas. Having a workforce with a living and beyond salary is the best option economically, productivity, morally and in the betterment of society all around. And not all people have the same opportunities and access to information and education, so that option only works in theory. Is an optimistic fantasy but a fantasy nonetheless
