Gorgeous performance; her competition was very talented as well 🥰. But she did take a tumble; recovered well considering.

Oksana Baiul was not as talented as Chen Lu who was active in the international scene and had all the triples. Chen Lu was beautiful, artistic, and had the jumps. Chen Lu could arguably been placed ahead of Baiul in the Olympics. What do skater enthusiast remember...This JUVENILE program by Baiul or Chen Lu 1996 Long Program to Rachmaninoff ?

At 4:20 when Sandra Bezic says " . . .this is really a young lady with a future." No untruer words were ever spoken. (Oksana wasn't that great and time ended up showing that).

@@geniet9542 She may have been awarded the gold, but Nancy's performance was better. Oksana two-footed two jumps, and had no triple triple combo. She landed only three clean triple jumps to Nancy's five clean triples (including a triple triple). They held her up and after the Olympics she tanked in her professional career and never won anything.

and then becomes a big mess :( I wish they didn't give her the gold. She would probably stay in the competitive skating, improve (she had the artistic thing down... but technically... just not that impressive, imho) and be better off.

Oksana was very talented ice skater but her nerves sometimes failed her. Her artistry and presentation was exquisite and her classy style brought a touch of beauty to her dancing! A lot of people mention that she's the most artistic skater. I actually think Kristie Yamaguchi is more artistic, BUT Oksana is not only that, she's an entertainer on top of being a real dancer.
@evangelinebeltran3652 жыл бұрын
Sorry. Artistically? Can’t compare her to Yamaguchi. Oksana’s unmatched up to this day.
@MTknitter222 жыл бұрын
yes, @Hikaru Uta, yes, and its the rare stars like Oksana who are the ones who fill those arena seats and cause huge ratings for figure skating. Let’s face it, its a sport where on those years between the Oksana Baiuls, not all that many are watching or caring about the sport. The Sonja Henijes & Oksanas do not come along very often. Sonja and Oksana at their peak did something special to an audience. Its a beautiful and touching thing. Peggy Fleming is the one who brought this up.

The commentators are often wrong :-/ They said Mao was a two-time World champ when she had three titles, and they once listed Kerrigan as "1992 Olympic Bronze medalist"... Guess they forgot about Lillehammer, or perhaps they were subtracting points for her bad attitude :-$

Who skates like this at 15?!? Other than Lipinski and Asada, I suppose. As Scott said at Lillehammer, to list Oksana's weaknesses - she has none. Does anyone have footage of her from Ukrainian Nationals; i.e., before she was competing internationally? Would love to see more than just the two amateur SPs and one LP - however amazing they might be!!!

She had talent, but giving her the fame and glory had ruined her. (though apparently, she had horrible training conditions back home then, because of frequent power cut off, she had to first assist in making the ice skatable... so i see why she went pro so soon). She could have been awesome, but i feel she got distracted and comfortable. Her professional programs are overdramatic for most of the part, too much handflailing and wiggle and pose... she just didn't grow as much as others did.
@christianealshut11233 жыл бұрын
@@soniquecat4745 I think she also made a number of professional choices that she perhaps should not have made because she thought she "owed" her trainer, who had taken her in as one of the family. Though it turned out later that this woman had also exploited her, making contracts in her name when she really hadn't the right because she was neither her adoptive mother nor her legal guardian - there was never any paperwork to prove that she had any right to make these arrangements, There was a lot of money that Oksana had earned but never actually seen. And then she came to the United States together with her trainer without knowing a word of English at first, and I think she also became an alcoholic.

If she could telegraph those jumps more, that would be awesome.

+ivyleaguewino If you notice when she attempts the Loop, Lutz, and Flip her preparation is quite excessive, all signs of choreography disappears because of the long preparation. For a good example of someone who uses beautiful transitions and very little prep. look up Yuzuru Hanyu.

And has a very annoying, nasally voice. Her reaction to the Canadian pair team placing 2nd (but later awarded a co-gold with the Russians) in 2002 was unprofessional. She also had a tendency to interrupt the other commentators so she could be the center of attention. I would have loved to have her paired with Dick Button, he would have never let her get away with that.

Pretty juvenile program. Mistakes on her jumps, no jump combinations, mediocre spins, no true spin combination, and very average footwork and spirals. I never understood why commentators like Sandra Bezic were so impressed by Oksana Baiul's figure skating.
