This Rocking chair was a real mess. it was repaired so many times that most of it was a repair lol
I tried sewing for the first time and first time re-upholstered a chair. Hope you enjoy this video.

I’m a sewing teacher and my dad is an upholsterer, you did an excellent job! You’d definitely get an A+ in my class! That tacking strip is hard to do. I’ve seen my dad do it and he has a few tricks to get it just right. And sometimes he has had to redo it so don’t be too hard on yourself. If my dad watched this I think he would be impressed of what you accomplished as well.😊

Straight seams are the most complicated to make! I've been sewing all my life, I also studied patternmaking and textile design. And I always say that making straight seams is a skill not everybody has. Curves are more easy to make.

@@Trammiliin Really? I sew and curves are my nemesis. I cannot sew a curve free hand. I have to mark my seam allowance out on tracing paper, pin it to the garment, stitch then pull the paper away. If I do it free hand the stitching is awful.

Oh Jay! I have been sewing since I was a little girl, and I am so impressed not only with how this turned out, but also with how boldly you tackled a completely new skill! The chair came out simply beautiful. I have two suggestions: if you place your pins perpendicular to your work, they are easy to handle than if they are parallel as you had them. Also, you might want to take a look at a fifth video to add to your new profession as an upholsterer - David has a good tutorial on how to make a simple stretcher to make the fabric tight using a piece of wood and nails. Well done, you.

Molly beat me to it, but I was going to make the same suggestions about the pins. And about how boldly you took on a fabric with a pile that needs to be the right direction, and on your first time sewing, too! Bravo! I love the color choice for your fabric with that wood. One of my treasures is my grandpa's upholstery hammer...I use it in jewelry making. He had an upholstery business with his brother, then he created a chain of fabric stores. All, after coming to this country with little English, or formal education, and only $15.00 in his pocket.

Even the most difficult projects there is a certain ease and flow to it. You’re in ‘the Zone’. By your very nature you are an Artist & a Creative. I just want to say that when you do the "2000 years later", I still laugh every single time. LOL. I am so glad you didn't give up on this beautiful rocker. The more you took off finishes, the worse it looked! You are a brave man and so talented. Even if this was the first time you ever tried upholstery, it didn't show that in the final outcome.

There is a story about a tortoise and a hare. Slow and steady wins the race. I am a professional sewist - 60 yrs. I still slowly sew many things b/c of the type of textile or the type of garment or b/c of the design of what I am sewing. The fact that you took ply/pile into consideration means you actually watched someone who knew what they were doing to learn from. Hats off for a good job and the added decorative stitch was a nice touch. Hats off for a good job and a lovely rocker restoration.

Always impressed that you try things you have never done before. Velvet and piping are not beginner choices so kudos! Please, please, please use a respirator when using the spray adhesive. Two folks I know from the upholstery industry died of brain cancer from using it unprotected for decades. 😊

I was thinking the same way. If ya like it enough to restore it (and have to pull it apart) ya might as well make a pattern for it. Then if you want to change anything it’s easy-peasy.

All the earlier repairs indicate that the chair was beloved, or at least useful in its previous life. You've given it a whole new purpose with your joinery, and the new upholstery looks amazing. And piping, too! You gave the sewing the same level of attention to detail as your carpentry. All the frame pieces, stretchers, etc. are remarkably delicate; no wonder it needed so many repairs!

This will be one of my favorite projects so far. The more you get around the shop, the more I like the project, and you used a lot of equipment and material. The upholstery was fantastic, would have been difficult for someone with lots of experience. My mom was a seamstress and alterations specialist, she did a lot of costume repairing. It's a difficult profession, but based on how you finished this one, you're already way above the curve. I also like to see you revive furniture that will actually come into body contact, like stools, chairs, benches. Keep up the work, we are really enjoying these.

Honestly, Jay, you are fearless, even when it came to using a sewing machine for the first time. The wood of the rocking chairs thanks you for giving it a second life. It's a beautiful color and finish. It gleams. The dark green velvet gleams as well. Great choice. Greens can be tricky because they either have a yellow undertone, or, a blue undertone. And the color intensity matters a lot too. You chose wisely. Looking forward to more upholstery pieces in the future.

First rule do sewing trials on scrap pieces of material, this way if you goof your piece isn’t damaged! How smart of you to know about the pile , on the fabric . I get a feeling this won’t be your last sewing project, you’ve just opened the “ can of worms “ to a new world , keep it up , pat yourself on the back! Great job !

Oh my.....you threw everything but the cat at the chair. Having sewn since I was 9 and having more sewing machines than I will tell.....you did a fabulous job for a rank newbie! I taught both my sons how to sew, because everyone should have a clue. That style is called Danish Modern. My mother had coffee and end tables with the same lines and wood.

I loved your video! I know when something intimidates me I tend to put it off too. You crushed it! I love how you took the time to take out all of the old dowels and interesting "fixes" and did it the right way. Too many people would just shove some wood filler into pain it and say they fix furniture. You are an inspiration! It also didn’t bore me to watch you plugging the holes and cleaning them up. I think it is great for people to realize all the hard work and dedication it takes to truly restore something.

I recommend for first time sewing to use a test piece of the fabric and practice the feel of sewing before stitching together the actual cut piece for the project. And use a sample of the fabric intended for the project. This way a person has a bit of a feel for sewing. Ah the learning curve, hats off and good job! I see you used a decorative stitch with the yellow thread- nice touch. Pretty green fabric btw.

Jay, you did a remarkable job on this disaster of a chair!!! I don't think that chair will ever fall apart again. It's solid!! Your sewing has made me so jealous. I've been "sewing" for decades, but only for my own stuff. I would never do it for anyone else. I can't sew a straight line to save my soul. Very impressive work, and I think you would have done a wonderful job with the other sewing machine too. Don't let anyone shame you into upgrading your "tools". Kind people would never do that. I’m here to apologize for all the haters. Everyone is a professional behind a keyboard. I’ve never repaired, refurbished, redid anything in my life. Your channel inspired me to work on a fish tank stand. Is it perfect? By absolutely no means. But I did it. And I had the courage to do it because of your channel. You will never make everyone happy. You keep doing what you do. I love your channel. I haven’t seen since high school and if you as me, you did a heck of a lot better than I did back then. Better machine or not.

I had to laugh when you admitted that this is your first upholstery project. The cracks about KZfaq making you a professional upholsterer are a riot! I laughed at the comment about not putting staples through your fingernails, too. I enjoy watching your videos so much more when there isn’t any blood! I love the finish you chose for the frame. BTW, I also worked for a sewing dealership, and your choice of machine is excellent. I have been sewing on Brother machines for 25 years. I own 4 machines now, but when I owned my fabric store, I had 13 machines (I taught sewing classes). I can't wait to see another video. I love all of yours!

You did a great job reupholstering that chair. I reupholsterd a rocker when I was 15 that was a very long time ago . My Grandma gave it to me . Love From Oklahoma

👍 great work. Somebody treasured that old chair tried to repair it many times. Painting those old springs will help prevent more rust. Finally got the repairs it needed. Thanks for posting. I really like to watch all the steps involved.

Great restoration, looks beautiful. You are teaching me patience as well as methodology. My first thought would be to either throw it away or remake entire pieces that were damaged.

Tips from an upholsterer: don`t reuse foam or springs, they degrade over time. The front corners of the fabric on the seat look better if you handstitch them. The fabric loosens a little with use, so it should be slightly tighter than what you`ll be comfortable with😊
