The way Civ 6 did its soundtrack was genius. Love how it starts each Civ with either a tribal or folk or even small choir/single instrument "simple" song and as the ages evolve so does the theme to usually a fully orchestral masterpiece. Greece, America, Indonesia, Maori all with wonderful tracks, heck even Scotland the Brave has an incredible drop mid song and a heartlifting end. We really have been blessed with fantastic music in the gaming world.

Baba Yetu was actually nominated for the grammy awards, making it the first video game theme ever nominated and later it was announced as the category's winner, making it the first piece of videogame music composed to win a grammy. @1:20 It was actually the other way around. Civ IV and Baba Yetu was the first video game score to ever win a Grammy and it was for Best Arrangement, Instrumental and Vocals whereas Assassin's Creed won the first ever video game specific Grammy award, for the Best Score Soundtrack For Video Games/Interactive Media. Baba Yetu is the much more impressive win since it had to compete with music in all forms of media instead of the more niche award AC took home.

@Antis14CZ
@Antis14CZ Жыл бұрын
No doubt it's a beautiful song, but when you think about it, it's a bit of an odd choice to represent civilization as a whole. Having the song in Swahili is cool by itself - humans did originate from Africa, so it's representation that makes sense. No problem there. But then you add the fact that it's a prayer. A prayer to a god only a minority of people in the world believe in. A prayer from a religion that's not even the oldest religion in history. A religion that's not originally from Africa, that was spread there by missionaries and that's causing enormous harm in the region with the whole AIDS+no condoms thing. Not to mention that the games are about exploration, research and technology, which kinda goes against religion as a whole. I mean, even within the game itself, there is no truth to religion. There's no supernatural occurences, no miracles as a game mechanic. The game itself presents religion only as a means to manipulate people with no actual truth to it. This also makes using a prayer as a main theme kinda questionable, I'd say.
@Farathriel

@@Antis14CZ I'd say that Christopher Tin had chosen this track to be the main theme of Civilization IV in order to present a generalized effort of mankind towards something greater. "Our Father Who Art in Heaven" presents us with a set of notions: we aim to transcend ourselves by growing, being akin to God. We crave some kind of paradise. We also want to enjoy our meals and have a fruitful life. On top of that, people also want to forgive and be forgiven, as well as they wish somebody would help them avoid evil in their lives. So at the end of the day, it makes a lot of sense for Tin to choose Baba Yetu as it represents collectively understood mankind's culture. Regarding the rest of the things you have written. Well... I don't think it's a good idea to bring such a discussion here but since it has already happened, I will try to unpack some of them. But please, to whoever wishes to enter this discussion - keep it civil. I'm asking because I know such conversations tend to bring a lot of emotions. >A prayer to a god only a minority of people in the world believe in Christianity is one of the biggest religions around the world with the multitude of its denominations. Approximately 31% of people believe in it. It has also greatly influenced our world in a meaningful, positive way such as western humanism, the idea of human dignity and such. >A prayer from a religion that's not even the oldest religion in history It is one of the oldest religions from the Christian perspective as Christianity itself in its own eyes is the very continuation of the Old Testament. Other than that, it doesn't have to be the oldest. It has to be the one that has greatly influenced our world, which fits Christianity perfectly. >A religion that's not originally from Africa It doesn't have to come from Africa, well... actually it came from western Asia. Which again - for a game about evolving civilization, it makes a lot of sense as western Asia was, in fact, a cradle of civilization. >that's causing enormous harm in the region with the whole AIDS+no condoms thing That is, sadly, a strawman fallacy. While Catholic Church forbids the usage of contraception, it still provides a great deal of material and personal help in the poorest regions of the world. On top of that, if I remember correctly, late pope Benedict XVI speculated that in case of severe maladies such as AIDS, the usage of contraceptives is permitted. >Not to mention that the games are about exploration, research and technology, which kinda goes against religion as a whole. That is also a strawman fallacy. While some protestant denominations are straightforward supporting biblical literalism, thus rendering their beliefs rather anti-scientific, it is nowhere to be found within, for example, Catholic Church and Orthodox Church. On the contrary, Catholic Church was and still is a benefactor of scientific progress. With the amount of effort put into research, its interest in astronomy, philosophy and many other fields of research, it is a big misconception to believe that Christianity is anti-scientific. Other than that, progress of the civilization isn't measured in the technological advancement but also in cultural growth. EDIT. there's another reason as to why Tin had chosen Baba Yetu. It's because he also included other songs from other cultures and religions, such as "Mado Kara Mieru", which is pretty much samsara wheel depicted in the passage of the seasons.
@Antis14CZ
@Antis14CZ Жыл бұрын
@@Farathriel You're right, we shouldn't derail this too much. I'd just like to briefly address the two points you labeled as strawmen: AIDS+no condoms - you say my claim is a strawman, but then you basically admit I'm right. You admit that CC forbids contraception and then try to divert attention to some other things CC is doing that are good. That's a non sequitur. The blood is on their hands, even moreso because the only reason they're against contraception is purely religious. It has no basis in fact or science, making it a textbook example of "needless" in needless suffering. And the thing about Benedict... So, after decades and decades of people screaming at them that they're practically mass-murdering people in Africa, their leader "speculated" that they could make an exception? Seriously? Is that the best they've got? As for the relation with science, religion, at its core, is a belief in magic. It doesn't get any more unscientific than that. Religion doesn't have a problem with science...until science start chipping away at the foundations of religion itself. And the more science we do, the more irrational religion is revealed to be. Besides, while religion may give money to science, let's not forget that it is indeed science, not religion, that actually gives us useful information. What was it that gave us the math needed for grand architecture? The chemistry to make new materials? The physics know-how to make flying machines? The cures for diseases that have mowed down our ancestors for millenia? Hint: it weren't our holy books. In conclusion, I believe my points stand as accurate observations, not strawmen. You're free to disagree, of course. Have a nice day.
@Farathriel
@Farathriel Жыл бұрын
@@Antis14CZ >You admit that CC forbids contraception and then try to divert attention to some other things CC is doing that are good. That's a non sequitur. Which was a response to your petitio principii. You have assumed that a ban on contraceptives is bad, while ignoring the alternative presented by the Church - abstinence, which remains an effective way of counteracting sexually transmitted diseases. Also - I pointed out strawman here, because it clearly is a strawman. You presented an unfair, unfavorable interpretation of this particular case while ignoring - somewhat crucial - peripherals that I briefly managed to touch. Not to mention that AIDS case was a form of cherry picking as you chose the lowest hanging fruit to achieve... who knows what at this point? It's a video about music. Christopher Tin made an album devoted to various human cultures - you can check it up on KZfaq, it's still there, the whole album. I don't see why Baba Yetu is - art-wise - a bad, misplaced choice since it fits the game so well. Maybe it has something to do with your subconscious contempt towards religiosity? Anyway... >As for the relation with science, religion, at its core, is a belief in magic That's a really bad misconception. Magic and religions, while have the same root, are widely disconnected. It is especially prevailing among monotheistic religions where transaction-based relation with the deity is absent. Magic, in other words, places a big stress on transaction logic, while e.g. Christianity, derives its philosophy from the idea of metanoia - one's change of inner life and ethics based solely on the contact with the deity. Not to mention that the biggest religions around the world such as Judaism, Christianity, Buddhism and Hinduism are strongly critical towards magical thinking and superstitions. So with that in mind, you are again presenting a strawman, which takes form of a hasty generalization. Because of how sophisticated this case is, your simplistic approach simply fails to recognize the complexity, thus rendering your statements as fallacious. >until science start chipping away at the foundations of religion itself And this is clearly a material error. Science cannot chip away anything from religion because it isn't in possession of the tools that would allow it to research e.g. theological matters. It is, by far, only the notion of scientism which remains a form of philosophical statement that has been debunked as mistaken and methodologically incorrect. What a scientist at best can do with religions is to remain silent, unless a religion tries to step inside science's methodological boundaries. >Besides, while religion may give money to science, let's not forget that it is indeed science, not religion, that actually gives us useful information You're mistaken here as well. Religion does not merely give money to science. It promotes - well, at least Christianity does - scientific method and philosophical endeavors. The whole history of western civilization is submerged in the fact that the Church supported universities and promoted academic lifestyle. Not merely donating it but eagerly engaging itself in the actual research. While you may, of course, present me with more cherry picked cases of historical arguments such as Galileo or Copernicus, the fact that religion played an active role in the history of science is indisputable. >it weren't our holy books Why would it be there in the first place? Are you aware that theological poems' purpose is to provide, in most cases, an ethical commentary coated in various symbolic meanings? You're asking for something that won't be there and then you eagerly criticize the absence of something that you have merely assumed. Neither Quran or Holy Bible were written with scientific purposes in mind, then why would you seek it there?

(Why Stellenbosch is ranked the #1 choir in the world.) The variation in voice timbre gives so much more depth than overdubbing a single voice many times. And as a singer, there is musical electricity flowing between everyone in a large group where you Feel the music. This is a powerful song that deserves a powerful performance. He got flamed in the below video's comments because he mistakenly called his video "First GRAMMY for Video Game Music ....". Which is not true as Christopher Tin won the first Grammy for video game music, although it was won in a category not specific to video game music (ie Best Instrumental Arrangement Accompanying Vocalist(s) category). But if you actually listen to what Geebz says in the video(starting at 16 seconds), he explicitly states that Stephanie Economou "...won the very first Grammy in a Category ever offered to composers of video games". kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rqmTm5Wrt9zdYqs.html

You'd like Civilization 4's music collection. As you lead your civilization through the eras, the music changes to fit with the relevant music for each era. So in the ancient era you get a lot of different kinds of drums (and I want to say wooden xylophones?) and rarely songs with vocals, and in medieval era you get a lot of monk chanting and medieval flute, while in renaissance you get a lot of concertos. I also concur that you should check out Tin's Sogno di Volare, in his return to the Civilization franchise in Civ 6

All of Christopher Tin's work is amazing. His album Calling All Dawn's is all in different languages and each one is so good. Baba Yetu is a classic though, it made the opening for Civ 5 so disappointing, but thankfully they brought Tin back for the Civ 6 theme and he did not disappoint with Sogno di Volaire.

To follow up, the theme of Civ being to build up from a tribal civilization into the modern and beyond you can actually hear Tin mimicking that with this piece. It starts simple and very tribal, and crescendos into full strings and orchestral backing. Brilliant theme writing.

Just for the context Baba Yetu is Paternoster (Lord's prayer) in Swahili Jesuit missionaries used a strategy of adapting Christianity to whatever culture they preached to This includes translating everything to local language and integrating with the existing deities For example in Japan they've associated Amaterasu Omikami with the Mary

For some context on Civilization as a game: The Civ games are part of a niche type of strategy game known as 4X games, which stands for "Explore, Expand, Exploit, Exterminate." The goal is to take a nascent real-world civilization from prehistory to the modern day, developing technology, colonizing territory, finding new resources, and (of course) fighting rival nations for control of the world. What made it a bit unusual when the first Civilization came out is that it was one of the first games that allowed you to win through non-violent means. You could just beat the other nations into submission, but you could also secure their alliances through diplomacy, develop your technology to such an extent that you can literally leave them all behind, or (in later games) achieve cultural dominance through art, academia, or religion. From a thematic perspective, one of the enduring ideas is that of Progress, the idea that humanity is always moving forward towards a better and brighter future, even if it becomes hard to see at times. Every civilization, we are reminded, began with little more than effort and a dream, and from that blossomed art, culture, faith, and technology. We waged great wars, and forged greater peace. We have even reached out and touched the stars, however briefly, and with great effort, we may do so again.

Yes CIV! a classic series. The song and video are made as an intro theme, but it's not representative of the gameplay and to a degree the music during the game(which is still great), which is a turn based strategy game on a global scale, where you start with a small tribe at the dawn of civilization and develop your civ throughout history to the modern era and near future. My personal favourite music is from Civ 3, great stuff there, maybe a bit less elaborate, 'Smash' is my fav, a great modern guitar driven song. Also Civ 2 has lots of great music, including classical pieces.

Honestly all the music from Civ6 is worth a listen. Every civ (almost) has it's own main theme filled with unique instruments and cultural influences, that evolve the further into the game you get. Composed by Geoff Knorr. I would recommend Byzantium, Georgia, America, Cree, Gaul, Maori and Sweden.

My dude! From one slightly less old guy to another, if you're seriously doing a Civ OST night on stream, you should take the night off from Minecraft and grab Civilization VI (the most recent iteration) to play between OSTs. It's basically a turn-based board game, which is perfect for old dudes and perfect for being interactive on stream (no reflexes or complicated controls, etc.) and you'll get the full vibe for appreciating the OSTs. (and after you end the stream you will sneak back and play it recreationally by yourself, because again, it's the perfect old man game)

Civilization is a turn-based strategy game where you are placed into a world map and you play as a country/empire of your choosing. The game starts in 3000BC and ends in 2050AD, your empire will progress and change over time through researching technology and expanding your territory. Your goal is to expand your empire and engage with other empires through peaceful diplomacy and trade or through war and conquest. There are 5 ways to win the game: A Domination victory, where you conquer all other empires in the game through war. A Science victory, where once your civilization reaches a high level of technology you can construct a colony ship to take your civilization to other planets. A Culture victory, where your empire's culture becomes so dominant that it replaces the cultures of all other empires giving you de facto control over their societies. A Diplomatic victory, where if your civilization has enough diplomatic power and influence over other empires you can elect yourself leader of the world in the United Nations. A Time victory, any civilization that is still standing by 2050AD gets the time victory. Civ lets people customize their game experience by allowing you to toggle on/off exactly which victories you want in your game. You could enable them all or only enable some of them, some people don't like certain victories so they disable some of them. Would love to see you react to some of the Civ 5 OST too, a lot of the war themes are really good like the England and Ottoman war themes.
