The Mash and Drum

Күн бұрын

For the Old Forester 150th Anniversary Bourbon, 150 barrels were chosen by Master Distiller Chris Morris and set aside for this limited-release product.
The resulting aged liquid was personally and
individually tasted by Master Taster Jackie Zykan and separated by-hand into three distinct batches,
differing in proof and flavor profile.
The limited releases will be presented in an old school amber glass bottle reminiscent of the hand-blown glass and will come
in a commemorative canister. A limited number of
cases will be available nationally in October 2020 for a suggested retail price of $150. This is said to be about 6-7 years old, but aged in a heat cycled warehouse that makes it seem more like a 9-10 year old bourbon.

$150 for 6-8 year old bourbon is a non-starter for me. Please don’t buy secondary, that market needs to die.

Age isn't everything. If you've ever had Thomas H Handy (6yr) vs Bulleit 12yr rye, you know what i mean. I know one is uncut, but the perception of age isn't even remotely close. You'd think THH is 12+ and Bulleit 12 is a 4yr in comparison. I agree about secondary though. Its keeps a very large portion of enthusiasts from having any hope of trying things they would normally be able to enjoy.

Much as I love Old Forester (they trade blows with Wild Turkey for my favorite bourbon distiller), I have no desire to hunt these, even for their listed price. If I see batch 2 at MSRP I'll consider pulling the trigger partly for collecting as a fan and partly as a potential special occasion bottle, but honestly, for $150 I can buy 1920 and Ardbeg Uigeadail, which are already two of my favorite whiskeys. Plus I'm willing to bet 1920 is no slouch compared to these, especially considering how much cheaper it is.

I sampled OF b1 last night, and it's among the best I've ever tasted (far superior, for example, to a StgJr. b15) To my palate, no comparison with 1920, either, but I understand and appreciate your take.

Great review. Very enjoyable and concise. I love Old Forester, and their 1920 and rye are two of the best quality to price whiskies on the market, but I can't get my head around the SRP here. Sure, it's limited and comes in a fancy canister, but so do most Scotch whiskies (canisters). If I found one for $150 I'd probably buy it simply because I'm a huge OF fan, but man, I'd hesitate for sure. Their single barrel and 1920 for less than half the price sound like they're not too far off of these in terms of quality. Cheers.

As always, great review Jason! I'm having trouble justifying a $150+ price tag on these. I can appreciate that they are special releases for their anniversary but it sure seems like someone attached a $150 price tag to coincide with 150 years anniversary, quality notwithstanding! Guess I'll have to stick with $60 ECBP, KCBP, and Larceny.
