Sometimes you just need to unwind and relax with some of them old games. This time I managed to finish Aleste for the MSX and also dipped into some hot arcade hits like Congo Bongo, Super Zaxxon, Mr. Du!, and more.

Jeff, I wasn't having a great Wednesday. I skipped something I was going to do, I wasn't sure why exactly. However, today, this, is definitely pulling me up. Thank you.

Vectorman defense force rise up!! It's merely coincidental that it was one of the first home video games that I ever played, before I "developed taste" and understood that things could be "good" and "bad".

I was just playing Zaxxon last weekend at one of those corny barcades (aka a Millennial retirement home). I had never seen it before and my friends and I agreed it still looks awesome even today. The sfx are great too. Retro but not dated. Another classic arcade game I feel the same way about is Tempest

I remember playing this game as a strange mail order Master System game called Power Strike. Turns out Aleste was ported that way.

2:08:50 - Sega of America did not make a big deal out of Burning Rangers when it was released. To my knowledge there were no TV adverts and only a scant few magazine advertisements with the short lived "Hard Stuff" slogan. By 1998, the Saturn was basically over in the NA retail market. Burning Rangers apparently had a pretty limited print run by SOA standards... same with PDS. It was a hard game to even find stocked anywhere at retail. Unless you ordered the game out of a mail-in 'back of gaming magazines' store fronts like Chips & Bits.

if you haven't seen the 1989 japanese cyberpunk movie Gunhed I recommend it. It's extremely poorly edited making the story incomprehensible, but the saturn version of Thunderforce V seems to be inspired by its visual style, it uses those huge fonts and wireframe shots a lot. It's a movie I'd love to see adapted as a roguelike, as it's essentially about a mech climbing a 99 floor tower to reach a crazy AI on the top floor.

Finally, someone makes the argument against the Saturn that I have against the Nintendo 64- It's a fantastic system in retrospect but it was awful going through it! The drip of games was slow and expensive, and as a teenager I was tired of seeing kid games like Diddy Kong Racing and Banjo Kazooie. Yes- I'll accept the answer that those games were great NOW, but I did not want those games then! I traded it for a PlayStation and it was incredible, but the weird nostalgia of the N64's and Saturn's total catalog often glosses over the release deserts some experienced. As an aside, my brother had a Saturn and owned maybe three games for it- namely because the retail shelves for that system were already so sad and with no hype it just sort of gathered dust. Again, that catalog is amazing if you were able to be aware of all the weird games you can get for it, but store shelves were absolutely the "what you see is what you get" and years later was amazed to find out that system had more than ten games.

Figuring out that Aleste on the MSX was actually pretty darn good was a side-effect of firing up Knightmare 2: The Maze of Galious, but what a neat discovery to make! Compile's done well on quite a few weird little systems out there.

I wonder if you're aware of SNES's Super Aleste (named Space Megaforce in U.S.). It's the Perfect Cell of the Zanac lineage. The quality of Super Aleste is a crazy leap from previous Compile games, despite once again being "Zanac++": not too difficult, very creative, great audio, massive weapon upgrades. I believe the company/devs split after releasing it.

Jeff, you might wanna check out MUSHA by Compile for the Genesis. It's also part of the Aleste series and it's fantastic! M.U.S.H.A. as in Metallic Un Super Hybrid Armour, obviously.

A friend of mine had a Zaxxon cabinet in his basement when we had a birthday party at his house during 3rd grade. One of the kids was jealous that we were all focused more on Zaxxon than him so he unplugged it with a giant crack of electricity that shorted out the breaker and made the cabinet unplayable. That kid was ostracized for the rest of the year at school and no one ever sat with him at lunch. Don’t fuck with Zaxxon.

I've never once gotten MAME or Retroarch to run anything before. It's ridiculous how complicated it is compared to single-system emulators. I just stick to Mister FPGA for pre-2000 systems (or real hardware).

I remember there was way more hyper for the SATURN than for the ps1 for sure, i mean was SEGA´s answer to the 3DO plus would have the 3D arcades of the time, i was super hyped for Virtua Fighter and Panzer Dragoon, the problem was when it finally launched and the release games came an went, in 96 Playstation just had better games and the hype around the Saturn just died slowly, in the Dreamcast case the hype was to the roof cause the power, but same thing happened, after the launch, the Dreamcast hype just went dying slowly till then came the ps2, that´s how i remember it

The bizarre early launch didn't help matters, I remember walking into Gamestop one day and it was just there, no buildup or anything, and Sega didn't have anywhere near enough launch titles or much of anything else for several months afterwards. By the time the PlayStation launched, it had all the momentum, and Sony did a much better job of building awareness and making sure there were plenty of games out there on day 1.

I just want a game, where you can play as Fred Durst, 50 cent, Compton rappers, Roddy Piper, Macho Man, Dennis Rodman, Kid Rock, where you can shoot stuff yelling BOOM shakalaka !! Limp Bizkit should have it´s own videogame, made by Cliffy B., just for the sake of it., the world needs fun stuff... i don´t know... bring back Duke Nukem or something...

How about "Leave me sexy, i´m playing parodious"... lol, somehow i see a future of gaming going back on becoming niche again and sweet, but this time there will be far more roms of like 50 or 60 years of gaming and some new stuff, i see an enviorment like in the late 80s PC japanese scene, remember those pirate PC-98 and Sharp 68000 floppy games? or the Dos PC pirate games?, i see a world of that, in a way steam is that, in a way the internet is already that, somehow i see gaming becoming only the internet rom scene and the main shit going away for a while, but the roms surviving, gamers love gaming, that´s all, we are weird like that, i mean who else will spends a mortgage money into buying an original SEGA corp statue of SONIC from the 90s, just for the sake of it ? or better yet, spend money on restoring and old SONIC statue from a SEGA arcade from the 90s ?, yup that kind of people will make the magic go on... long live gamers...

For real if Xbox wasn´t runned by microsoft it would have been way cooler, that´s why the og xbox and the 360 were great, since microsoft took over the management of xbox, just wasn´t cool anymore, and Phil spencer and others said it, they were suppose to shut xbox, and Nadela kept it alive on the condition that it turns into microsoft gaming if you know what i mean and not xbox, is still think the og xbox and the 360 are two of the best consoles ever and the current xbox series X in hardware and library too, just missing the cool exclusives but everything else is great, so is a management problem and a lack of vision about videogames, in a way Playstation is affected too, but xbox is worst in this situation
