Awesome trip plan and beautiful weather too. Shorter miles and more relaxing in nature. Awesome. Well done on your video capturing the beauty of the adventure too. Happy Birthday! Great place to spend the day for it. I spent mine this year face planting it in a pile of deadfalls off trail in the backcountry. Glad yours was good! LOL. Never heard of the coffee grounds association with bears. Interesting. Cool to see the rattlesnake. Het is my Kryptonite. I understand where you are coming from. Great first day. Thanks Steve! It was a nice trip. Relatively lower miles so relaxing. There were a lot of mosquitos though. Coffee grounds have a strong oder and since bears have such a sensitive sense of smell they are attracted to it. And there were piles and piles of it in the fire ring. I think heat is becoming my kryptonite as well.

Happy birthday!! I’ve hiked this trail before. I really enjoyed it. Seen a bunch of rattlesnakes. I like your campsite area. Especially beside the creek. Summertime is made for kayak camping 😁. Cool video 👍🏻👍🏻

Thanks Jason! Lots of rattlesnakes in PA. However, I saw far less than I did in 2021 and 2022. It was a sweet spot. A little mosquitoee though but still nice. Yeah, summer/hot weather backpacking is starting to get to me as I age. I’m getting old. lol. 👍

Love this trail! Rock Run is breathtaking. I think last time there we camped where you hung your ursack. There were always rattlesnakes on that rock lookout. I can’t remember exactly where, but there’s a section that was obviously an old logging road, that came up in the tallest, straightest cherry trees. My husband absolutely loved to see that. I’m needing to get back here. I’ve only gone clockwise, so maybe this direction next time. This is the perfect weekend hike. I need two nights though. :)

It’s perfect for a two nighter. I think I’ve seen rattlesnakes every trip I’ve done on this one. I think the big spot for them is around Sullivan mountain (I think). I’ve done it clockwise and counter clockwise. I don’t think it is really that much more difficult either way you go.

Oh, I was also going to say that I don’t perform well in the heat at all! But incorporating electrolytes really helps me. LMNT is a good, balanced brand w/o sugar.

@@deborahhill3105 up until this year I’ve been fine on the heat. Maybe it’s old age catching up with me. I always have, and take, plenty of electrolytes. I bring capsules, MIO and Liquid IV on each trip.

Nice. Eventually I will get there! Next week I was supposed to go to Maine for the Grafton Loop trail, but now I am looking at The Cranberry Lake 50 in the Adirondacks. Its possible I might just end up in Catskills.. but I am aiming for that Cranberry Lake trip.. then I will head back to PA for some trips! Happy birthday to you!!!

Ey Happy Birthday! Great video. I really should try to get an early start to make the most out of my trips. That really sucks about the litter. I like the foot end way way higher than my head end for my hammock. It's also symmetrical. I tend to switch between head-left and head-right. One way hasn't stuck for me yet. It's been an unusual El Nino year too so it was cooler but more humid over here on the West Coast. Probably the opposite over there.

Thanks! I love the early starts because I can get to camp earlier and relax instead of getting there later, set up, eat and sleep. The exception is if I’m trying to do bigger mile days. Then I’ll hike later. It the colder it gets and the shorter the days get the less miles I do. Yeah, it’s been really hot and humid here.

I don't think I will be hiking anything long (Late June-August) next year. The bugs are SO bad and the heat just makes it less enjoyable.

The bugs don’t bother me much but this year the heat was bothering me. I’m usually ok to hike in the sweltering heat and humidity. Maybe the Standing Stone Trail earlier this year in July ruined it for me. lol.

The stream in one place I haven't camped on that trail that I would like to at one point. You should be good with the Ursack I've had great success with it and we backpack in a lot of the same areas. I will say the Opsak is nice but mine failed in the cooler temps of fall not sure if I got a bad one or what happened with it. Since 2019 I've been using the bags made by Coghlan's they have been great and only failing after a good amount of use.

Every time I went through the stream area there were always people already there. This time I was early. lol. I’m liking the ursack. The only issue I am having is fitting it in my backpack when I have food for more that a couple days. My regular food bag is shaped where it fits into my pack no matter how much is in there. I guess the dimensions make it like that. The ursack is more cylindrical or rectangular so it gets longer instead of wider. I’m getting ready for a 4 day trip in a couple days and with that much food the ursack it tall and I can’t lay it down sideways in my pack. My way of packing is I stack everything with the stuff I don’t need during the day at the bottom and work my way up so the first thing I need at camp is on top. So I’m thinking I may need to rethink how I pack my pack but can’t figure it out at this point. Do you have any tips or how do you pack yours in relation to your other gear?

@@backpackingadventures4813 My pack is the Osprey Exos 58L I lay mine sideways at the top and when the bag is to big for that I pack in on top and under the bags brain. Similar to how most carry a bear canister.

@@DragonRoamsThanks! I just got back from a trip last night and wished I had it. I took my regular food bag because I didn’t want to mess with how I pack getting ready for this trip. But, the last night after hiking a long day, got set up the ate dinner the person with me said, did you hang your bear line. It sucked. lol. So I had to get up in the dark and tired and hang my food and I kept kicking myself for not having my ursack. This weekend I’ll practice with packing it different ways based on the size of my ursack.

I parked, started, and ended at the Maston trailhead. There is a little campground right there where you park.

Damn shame people leave food shit around camp sites!! This is why I prefer stealth camping away from established sites.
