M. Night Shyamalan brings us another cinematic thriller, which revolves around a beach where people rapidly age. Curiosity piqued, so let's review OLD!

Actually I disagree, I think there was a time that he knew how to write and he made some legitimately great movies, and then all of the sudden it’s like he just FORGOT. Working in a theater is indeed awesome. I watched so many blurays in the morning before opening. We were all friends on the staff so sometimes we'd come in, 3 or 4 of us, and watch "Avengers: Infinity War" or something. It was great. I also watched "Bonnie and Clyde", "Jules and Jim", "Sweet Smell of Success", "Klute", "Kwaidan", "The Killing", "Angels with Dirty Faces", "Billy Liar", just...so many blurays of films that came out before I was even born. I think the movie is definitely watchable. It kept me engaged, even if there were some really weird transitions. Side thought. Did anyone else think that allowing the baby to actually survive and grow up on the beach would have been a more interesting/horror element to the movie? Like... growing up from a kid who has seen the outside world is one thing. But having that beach be your whole world would be completely different.

I definitely love this movie simply because it's like its telling you that you need to enjoy life while you have it...maintain your childlike attitude even as an adult because once your body starts giving up on you, that's it and there's no going back. The scene where they were both making sandcastles as an adult and he realized the writing that his friend made. It kinda felt like the message he was trying to imply is that you can find a lot of answers within youthful and innocent thinking.

I fee like that is the message of the whole movie. Almost everyone panicked but the main family didn’t. The parents died but they had resolved their conflict. They died happy. The reason the two kids make it out a live is by appreciating the time they have left instead of giving into their fear and despair like so many of the other characters. I like how you brought up the lack of mystery in this movie, and how sometimes horror is better when questions are left unanswered. The original graphic novel never reveals why the people are aging rapidly on the beach. shyamalan saw that as an opportunity for a twist.

The theatrical poster design is a direct reference to the graphic novel, Sandcastle, which inspired this film. It's from a moment in which a character tells a tale about "a strange old man who had half of everything: half a head, half a body, and half of his arms and legs." Old (2021) marks the first time M. Night Shyamalan has filmed entirely outside Greater Philadelphia since his first film Praying with Anger (1992). However, Guy and Prisca mention that Philadelphia is where they live. The film is an adaptation of a 2010 graphic novel by writer Pierre Oscar Lévy and artist Frederik Peeters called Sandcastle. When asked what inspired him to adapt the book to film, director M. Night Shyamalan explained: "The book gave me the opportunity to work through a lot of anxieties I had around death and aging, and things like my parents getting older." Near the end, the notebook they find that contains a written possible theory and other victims' names is said to have belonged to a science fiction writer. This is a direct reference to the graphic novel wherein the main character that comes up with theories for their unusual situation is a science fiction writer.

I feel the important take away in this film is to have courage when facing your own mortality. Almost everyone panicked but the main family didn’t. The reason the two kids make it out a live is by appreciating the time they have left instead of giving into their fear and despair like so many of the other characters.

I actually loved "OLD". It depicted that most of us "CAN NOT" escape our deterministic future (but only a few). It showed our perceived happiness in the present, and our naive perception of the future. It hit home, how short life is... well at least for me. From growing old and not maturing intellectually, from inevitable medical issues as we age, the important things in life and the trivial things, accepting our destiny/fate or keep trying to create your own no matter how difficult, from philosophical ethics in science research in order to save/help more lives by sacrificing others, relationships, discrimination, etc... Its a plethora of experiences, issues, science, philosophies, ethics, social, etc... beneath the surface of what is merely going on the surface of being in an environment of accelerated aging. After watching several of Shyamalan movies, I'm beginning to see how some of these odd dialogues are purposely deliberate. There's a rhythm and strategically enhance/placed at a particular moments. It leaves bad taste to some, particularly to viewers wanting perfection. But the reality is that, in real life situations, you will find most people saying odd statements/dialogues during stressful situations. Nevertheless, its something that doesn't bother me watching his films as I can relate to them.

M. Night Shyamalan does this a lot - he has some intriguing setup but is unwilling to actually forge the story. He always underdelivers - in his movie Glass, he is pumping the last battle in the center of Manhattan in front of the world for 1,5 hours and then shows it in the hospital backyard. His series Servant was a constant "atmospheric" suspense build-up without a punchline. I'm starting to recognize his style.

It was cool that he touched on how every race ages differently as does the mind and body. Also the subliminal messages that were put in the movie. Ex: the woman’s makeup resembling a clowns face as she aged. There were a lot instances where he touched on social aspects of human nature as well. Ex: The most rational person at first (the nurse) who explained how impossible it’d be to swim against the oceans current, eventually lost all sense of ration and was the first person to attempt it (leading to his death). The movie was very well put together.

@whitb850
@whitb850 2 жыл бұрын
I would assume for the same reason they don't have to eat, drink, or go to the bathroom at an advanced rate. Their bodies aren't going through every natural process at hyper-speed. It's more like only the cells are advancing/dying quickly, but everything else about them remains the same (like as they mentioned in the film, their skin & nails aren't growing either). It's not entirely logical but I can accept it. If they needed to eat, drink, etc enough for 50ish years in just half a day, none of them would make it beyond probably minutes. If the women had years worth of periods in minutes, they'd bleed out right away. Everyone would die right away from not being able to keep up with their bodies' needs before any aging effects got to them.

Shyamalan has a great conceptual vision, but a strange execution. Sometimes that's all you need, because at least you're curious. The writing took me out of the movie, but the emotional moments helped bring me back in. Seeing those parents talk as they accepted the state of themselves, it hit a chord. I left the theater thinking, and I think that's what he wanted.

I feel like Shyamalan can make good movies when no one expects anything of him. But when he gets a hit the success builds his ego back up and he produces another shitshow. Shyamalan just need to understand that he needs screenwriters to enhance the quality of his scripts. He always has the unique high profile ideas( which is very rare in this remake/reboot era) but sometimes failed in execution just like Split and this Old. *Absolutely fell in love with this movie.* Personally for me, I’d say 8/10. It’s terrifying…and emotionally sad…and makes you realize what it means growing up and how much time you don’t have left with your family and loved ones. I usually HATE M. Night’s movies, but this one struck a chord with me. I feel like those who like thrillers with developed characters and emotional storylines on top of just constant thriller elements will like this (though don’t get me wrong, I still think this movie had pretty terrifying, disturbing sequences and deaths, especially the “hunchback” woman). I recommend it.

Just a little too easy for them to know this and figure it out. But the story in general was good as well the meaning of the movie. It had potential to be better via the script because the acting was great!

I enjoyed it but thought it was fun and funny, not great and scary. The dialogue is too nonsensical and there's no suspense about the characters dying because the intro to their lives felt rushed and superficial. They all kind of felt like caricatures and not real humans who had a life before the movie. That being said I enjoyed watching the way the movie played out but never felt scared for the characters or their fates because they just felt disposable in service of the individual cool moments that take advantage of the premise.

The "book" is actually a graphic novel called "Sandcastle" by Frederik Peeters and Pierre Oscar Lévy, if anyone is interested. There is a novel called "Sandcastles" by Luanne Rice, but it's nothing like the M. Didnt know it was based off a graphic novel but I enjoyed the science behind it. It helped to watch it with two Physician Assistants who are well informed on health and could explain to me everyone’s disorders and how the health science behind each disorder works. We had a whole a conversation on the old man’s dementia and how realistic it was for how some get extremely violent. I enjoyed it for the health science but yeah the film plot was okay for someone who is not a health professional. I did like the twist at the end though of the pharmacy using these people as experiments to test their drugs though.
