Thank you. My entire lineage and ancestry remains in Leigh and Wigan. Born at home, across from the Tamar in 1977, left in 1982. Parents moved us to Toronto, Canada. We were the only ones to have left. Everyone remained in Leigh and Wigan. All my relatives. I didn’t grow up with a single relative other than my parents and brother and sister. We’ve come back home many many times. Memories don’t fade ❤️

It's a small world, made even smaller by the internet... my grandma and grandad lived at number 2 Burns Avenue, just off the top end of Nel Pan Lane, for most of their post-war lives. My grandma had come over from the Faroe Islands a few years after the war, after marrying my grandad (a British soldier stationed there) and having my mum on Sandøy. Starting a life in coal mining Leigh in the late 40s must have been a sharp culture shock.... much as it probably was for your family heading to Toronto in the 80s. They lived there more or less until they died, and I have very fond memories of that house, spending weekends and being allowed to stay up and watch Starsky and Hutch! Was about the same period as you lived there, and beyond... 1977 is a red letter year for the junction of Nel Pan Lane and Wigan Road, by the Tamar pub it seems... you were born, and I remember standing there as a four year old as the Queen rolled by on her silver jubilee year tour of the country, waving at the oiks!

My Grandma and Grandad lived on Chaucer Grove until they passed away in 1998. They were there for 40 odd years. Our going away party was held at the Tamar. I was 5 and do still remember the party and the bus ride driving to the airport. My other Grrandparents ( who lived in Wigan ( Whelley area ) both passed away of Covid in December. Our life is in Toronto but our entire family is there, it’s tough. I will always be on the outside looking in to Leigh. Great memories of Leigh of the many times we’ve come back. Getting off the bus at Clare Farm to see my Grandma and Grandad.

Thank you this is really good. I remember a lot of the pics from my younger days in Leigh, I was born there at the Firs Maternity in 1953 and spent the first 35 years of my life in Leigh, but never saw a 'Marks and Spencer' there?

That photo with M&S doesn't look anything like Leigh ! Ok , I'm only a youngster (57) ! But I can't think of anywhere in the town centre that could accommodate such a wide pavement area, then a wide carriageway ! The time period seems to be 20s or 30s maybe ?

I think the biggest loss for Leigh was the railway links, it would be so useful these days!
