My hubby and I are so grateful to you for taking the time to upload this video ; ) We watched another helpful video, but our shower faucet was older (25+ years). You helped us identify the correct part, change the parts out, and save a couple hundred dollars in plumber fees. What a great feeling - we did it ourselves! Yaay! Thanks again.

I’m the guy that stood on my counter with a vice grip attached to the stem 😅. I texted my plumber and asked if this was normal. He said to use the white plastic insert or a pliers to turn the cartridge. Thanks for the pro tip.

Hello corybinsfield2974, I have talked to a lot of people who have done the same thing. I started using the plastic tool a few decades back. Moen didn't mention anything in the instructions as I think everyone thought it was just covering the end of the cartridge for shipping. Makes all the difference in the world spinning the cartridge back and forth. I know a lot of plumbers who never knew that is what it was for as well. You're not alone. LOL! Be a good video though! Congrats on the repair! Thanks for commenting and enjoy your week! Al

Terrific, thanks. That tip about twisting it back and forth to break the friction between those rubber pads and the brass cylinder was a great share of your experience and did the trick for me.

Hello NMranchhand, You're welcome! Twisting the cartridge is the secret to making it come out much easier. Many thanks for this video. A HUGE help. The cartridge was an absolute breeze to replace and who ever says THAT when it comes to plumbing. My local Home Hardware had a cartridge and I didn't have to pay anything because of Moen's lifetime guarantee...just had to take the old one back. It was 30 years old....the age of our house. Kudos to Moen. I wouldn't buy anything else now.

How does the return work. You have to have the old one on hand when you buy the new one? Or can you come back later with the old one and get your money back?
@RodinThink28
@RodinThink28 Жыл бұрын
@@ZupE891 Take a picture of your Moen faucet and send that to Moen. You do not have to take out the old cartridge. Not sure if a hardware store will accept that, but you can try. Moen will give you a new cartridge, but not sure if they'll give your money back if you purchase one.

I just want to thank yo for your video. I viewed another video that said "little white plastic" thing that comes with the cartridge is "completely useless". Your video clearly explained the usefulness of this tool. Literally, I was standing on the counter trying to pull it out. I thought I would have to go the route of a plumber. Your video explained that because the rubber binds with the metal, you use the white plastic tool to gently wiggle it left to right. Anyway, it worked! So, thank you for your video,

Hello Michael! Thanks! Congrats on the repair! I figured there had to be a reason for the cap. I have never found any information on it, but I decided to give it a try and it worked very well. I believe the company puts it in the bag to allow the installer to make slight turns to the cartridge allowing the retaining clip to go in easier and push it into the faucet body. But turning the cartridge back and forth with the plastic tool allows it to come out much easier. Thanks for commenting and enjoy your week! Al

My second cartridge is a bit more complicated. The set screw for the handle is rusted and I have not been able to remove it. The screw is slotted. I will try to cut the handle off and see if I can make the slot deeper with a dremmel tool. I don't want to drill it out on fears that I'll damage the theads that I'll need to pull out the cartridge. My easy out on small screws hasn't worked well in the past. Do you have any suggestions? Thanks again! J.B.

Great video! I had a very hard time getting my 1225 cartridge out. I yanked on the top with pliers but it would not budge. I wanted to be sure I could get it out first before purchasing a replacement so I did not have the little plastic tool that comes with the replacement and not sure it would have worked any way. I observed on the side of the stem of the cartridge, near the top, is a small hole on the side and using the biggest allen key I had that would fit the hole placed it in it. Under the allen key I placed my pliers under it, sideways, to give me something for leverage. I then pushed down on the allen key and to my surprise it popped up relatively easy. I had to work it some to get it all the way out. I bought a replacement at Lowes for $20 and replaced it and it works great. A little unorthodox method, I know, but it worked. Just be careful not to damage any other parts, especially the tabs of the old one in case it does not work for you. Though the new one comes already greased I added a little more.

Hello 1buckdharma; If it is a Moen cartridge then it should be a 1225B cartridge. They were the older style. The 1222B is about twice the size in diameter and is for the new bath and shower faucet. You may have to take the cartridge apart and apply a little plumber's lube to the O-rings. This should make it a lot easier to pull out and turn. I didn’t find this video until after I replaced the cartridge. First I had no idea that it was a Moen, since there are no markings anywhere on the outside. Then it took 1/2 hour of prying, pulling, and yanking to remove the old cartridge. I took it to Home Depot and they were no help identifying it. The old cartridge had a number 12801 stamped on it. I found that same number stamped on the 1225 cartridge. The new cartridge included the plastic tool that I needed to remove the old one. This job was a big PITA!

It helps to know that Moen's faucet handles require a 7/64 allen(hex) wrench, a size NOT included in many sets. Less than a dollar. Buy one before you drive yourself nuts.

Great tip, Candace. A word of caution, though - not all Moen faucets use the same size, even if the faucets look identical. I have two Moen Monticello single handle bath/shower faucets purchased about 10 years apart. They are the exact same model. They appear identical on the outside and they both use the 1225 cartridge, but there are quite a few internal differences. Regarding the handle set screw, the newer one, installed c. 2009, uses the 7/64 hex as you say. The older one installed c. 2000 uses a 3/32 hex set screw. The older faucet was really getting hard to operate, so I decided to give it a tune-up. I had no problem finding the right size hex wrench and removing the handle. Of course only after I changed the cartridge on the older one did I notice that the newer faucet had already lost a lot of the easy operation (silky feel) that the rejuvenated older faucet has. But initially I was stumped at how to remove the handle of the newer faucet. I went through all my standard and metric hex wrenches and it turned out I had nothing that fit. As you suggest, I was close to the point of going nuts, especially since I knew what size I used on the other "identical" faucet. I had to make a trip to the hardware store to buy another set that included the 7/64 hex wrench, and that was the ticket on the newer faucet. Another difference is the metal sleeve that covers the brass cartridge housing. On the newer faucet, you can slide it right out without removing the escutcheon (as shown in the pictorial Moen directions that come with the replacement cartridge). On the older faucet, that piece has two flared-out tabs that prevent removal of the sleeve without first removing he escutcheon. I should have ground them off before re-assembly. I see no purpose for them other than to make disassembly more difficult. Another tip I'll share. It was not possible to remove either cartridge initially, nor even to turn it with the provided tool. The cartridges were stuck so tightly that the plastic tool would walk right out of the engagement without budging the cartridge. I saw another video in which a person used a needle nose pliers to initially budge the cartridge a little bit, but even that trick would not move it. So I began spraying white vinegar and allowing it to soak in and do its thing on the mineral deposits. I kept spraying every couple hours. After a day or so of waiting in each case, I tried again and was able to begin turning and then eventually remove the cartridges. Maybe I should just resign to re-lubricating or replacing them on a maintenance basis every few years. I recall replacing cartridges on other Moen faucets in my house (the kitchen faucet plus the one that was originally in the master bath), but I never had this degree of trouble removing an old cartridge. Looks like it's time to replace my water softener! One other thing. Both of my bathroom faucets include the built-in stop valves. I think the versions that include the stop valves cost about $10-20 extra when I bought them. It sounded like a good idea. But when it came time to use them, I was barely able to get them to turn on the 2009 vintage faucet. They would not budge on the 2000 faucet. It's a nice idea if they would work. I probably ruined them because of a faulty water softener.

@MrUltraworld Hello there; If I were you I would remove the aerator and see what your water flow is like. Even though your spray seems to have pressure; the water goes threw very small holes and it could seem like there is lots of water. I would first try this and clean the inside of the aerator and reinstall it on the faucet. Let me know how you got along. Thanks for commenting and drop me a message!!! Al

video over 3 years ago, but still a goodie. it helped clarify whether i needed the puller, since posts on other sites tried to scare people into buying it. the only mistake i made was forcing the cartridge in and breaking the o-ring, but the second one i bought went in well. no leaks.

Hello Michael; Thanks for the kind words! Congrats on the repair! You have to be a little careful when installing the cartridge as the o-rings can get nipped. I personally don't own a puller. The plastic tool works on most of them. Once they begin to turn; you can usually remove them with a set of channels or pliers. If you call Moen; they will mail you a free cartridge at no charge directly and mail it to your home. Just tell them what type it is and when it was installed. They are an excellent company and have a great warranty. Thanks for commenting and have a great week! Al

i just replaced mine last night on my shower. I did all this and it was still unbelievably hard to pull out. My concern was of pulling the wall down ( that was how hard I was pulling) . Not very happy with the water pressure. Is there a replacement cartridge for this 1222b from someone other than Moen that will give a person more water pressure? I know you say how great this faucet is but with the low pressure and how hard it was to replace I will never buy another one.

I agree that Moen faucets are great. However, the last time I called them for a replacement cartridge they told me the lifetime guarantee is only for the original purchaser of the home. Since the average person stays in their house for about 7 years that is your guarantee.

After watching your video and installing my 1225 cartridge, I honestly think the tool is more for aligning the two plastic tabs vertically rather than use as a removal tool. It is a bugger to install the clip if the body is inserted off just a little bit and the tool can help rotate it in place. Hope this is helpful to someone.

hello PriestPhotios; This happens from time to time with the new cartridge. I believe they over lube them and just the weight of the handle is enough to shut them off. You can either exchange that one for another new cartridge or give it a little time and it will stiffen up and you will need to use the handle to shut it off. Sorry for youe troubles and best of luck! Al

I don't really know if Moen is best or not. But for sure they have the best customer service. Amazing, really. As the parts fail on my old Moen faucets they just keep sending me replacement parts, and they pay for everything. I just have to call and explain my problem. That will keep me buying Moen forever I guess.

Thanks so much for posting all of your videos! I was successful in replacing the 1225 cartridge in my Moen Adler Lavatory Faucet, but when I replaced the handle [this is the acrylic round handle which they call low profile], it keeps spinning around in a 360 degree angle. I tightened down the screw well that keeps the handle on, but I can't figure out why the handle won't stop at the usual 5 o'clock and 7 o'clock positions like it use to do. The faucet works well and does not leak at all now. Please let me know if you have a fix for this. Thanks again, Mitch.

We've just replaced a Moen 1225B cartridge in our stand up shower successfully. We thought by doing so it would fix the problem of only getting hot water out of the shower head. But........the problem still exists. The shower does not produce cold water. This is a secondary shower only used when the grand kids or guests come to visit. Can you suggest a home repair before we have to call in a plumber. Thanks so much!

Hello, I have a tub faucet that sits on one the side of the tub with two vertical handles. If you were facing the faucet, the hot is on the left side and the cold is on the right side. This tub was installed in 1992 with Moen fixture. There is no access to the plumbing or any of the tubs pipes because of the design of the tub is formed plastic. The hot water valve started to drip so I removed the handle and discovered the valves installed are set deep into the tub where an extension is used to attach the handle to the stem of the cartridge. The extension was cracked and broken. There is a number on the extension, #93366. I have been searching all the typical places for a replacement. I was also wondering how did they install the cartridge when it sits very deep and if I wanted to remove it how would i do so? Is a special tool needed for installation and removal? Where could I purchase the right extension? I would greatly appreciate any advise and suppliers. Thank you very much for your time.

I have replaced the pull/push style cartridges on both showers in our home recently with new Moen 1225B replacements. The new cartridges work 1000% better that the old ones, which were very corroded with lime scale deposits. I still have an issue however - while the hot and cold are on the correct sides, when I adjust the shower control to the middle, I never get warm or even lukewarm water. It runs ice cold. I have to adjust the control about 1/3 of the way toward full hot before the water output turns warm. Are there any additional adjustments I need to check on these Moen 1225B cartridges to get the temperature mix more even so warm occurs nearer to when I have the shower control set in the middle position?
@TheOldkid888
@TheOldkid888 9 жыл бұрын
gnsub1 Congrats on the repair for starters! There are no adjustments to the faucet except the scald prevention which entails just how far the handle turns. So if you can turn it to where the water is exceptionally hot; you probably don't have it on there. It really has nothing to do with the cartridge itself. You will have to turn the handle to where it is comfortable for you. after it being in that position for such a long time; it may take a little while to get use to... I hope I am understanding your question correctly. Thanks for commenting and have a great week! Al

Great video! You said you would consider a new set of faucet rather than purchasing a puller. How much more would have to come apart to replace the entire faucet unit you were talking about? +707SonomaComa Thanks. In order to replace the existing unit you have to turn the water off, cut the pipes, remove the flange and reinstall a new set by soldering them back into place. My kitchen faucet uses the 1225B cart. I've gone through about 7 of them in the past two years (some Ace brand, some Moen, and some another Ace-sold brand). It seems it's always the middle o-ring that fails. I've used plumber's grease, but then switched to silicon as Moen recommends against plumbers grease. Any thoughts on why this particular o-ring keeps failing? I'd love to blame the old faucet, but this o-ring is INSIDE the cart body... By the way, I found o-rings that will fit and just started switching them out instead.
@TheOldkid888
@TheOldkid888 8 жыл бұрын
+Rob G That is a pain in the backside replacing that o-ring every few months. I haven't come across this problem before myself. Do you have a lot of minerals in your water or are you on city water? Moen do make a brass 1200 cartridge. The only difference is the brass instead of the plastic. Not sure if the o-ring is any different in them or not, but a few people I know prefer these rather than the 1225. I will see if I can find anything on this problem for you. Thanks for commenting! Al

Hi, Our home was built in 1980 and we have the old style, where there is no outer sleeve on the cartridge per say. In other words, the new cartridges you find at the box stores are to large in diameter to go in the existing hole. I simply replaced two #9 washers and put everything back in place. Does not leak any more, and water turns on, but it is really hard to pull the valve out and turn the water on. Any suggestions?
