We totally need people like him! I can't say enough how much I miss quality!

Its great to see folks like this guy, it’s such a lost art to repair things, too much is wasted and therefore depletes resources. I personally repair vintage/antique appliances because their quality is superb and those machines will likely outlive me if given care. Folks like him are great resources and there are many like him in the community and around the country, learn what you can because people who know this information won’t be around forever.

Thos was really good - I could have watched more. I'm 63. I can remember getting my shoes resoled as a child. We have become a throw away world. I can remember getting new shoes at Sweezys Dept store and you could get the option of having metal taps put on. I think I remember I got that a lot. This was a fun memory. Thank you.

Good man! I still have shoes from 30plus years ago. Always try to repair them or alter them if even to use as old work shoes.

Bought $30 chairs from Walmart. They lasted 6 months before falling apart. Throw away society :(

As a boy, my mum would send me to collect repaired shoes about a mile away, so I’d walk there to see Geordie Arthur the cobbler. That was in the 60’s and I’d sit and watch him finish off the shoes. It was fascinating to watch. Nobody thought anything of getting shoes repaired. The throw away society all but killed them off. I watch shoes, boots, bags and belts being repaired on KZfaq. I ordered a decent pair of welted shoes with leather soles. Keep on repairing the shoes etc

I got my 10 year old very loved DM’s fixed by a shoe cobbler from timpsons and I got thicker platforms added to them I love them a lot given them a second chance and so far they lasted about 4 years since the repair (they been great) I would 100% get them fixed again if needed. Such great craftsmanship. Shame we have become such a wasteful society now and a throw away culture

They have a Cobbler in Bridlewood Mall(Warden/Finch) in Scarborough next to the BMO branch inside. Dude has been there since before I was born I think he does pretty good work from my personal experience. I assume he must have a lot of repeat customers because mall rents even in Scarborough are quite high combined with high Ontario hydro rates and high Toronto Commercial Property Taxes.

The problem with shoes today is that they are not using leather in it's original thickness, for many leather manufacturers they pass a naturally thick layer of leather through a splitting machine in order to get several leather sheets from one thick leather sheet WHICH WEAKENS THE LEATHER.

It is sort of paradoxical situation here. People do buy higher quality shoes, but they don't use those everyday like we used to. Since they don't get used everyday and they are high quailty; it takes a lot of time, even years, for those shoes to wear and need repairs. And when they finally need to be repaired, there aren't proffesionals who are up to the task. I own pairs of boots that have more than 20 years of service and look brand new. My grandfather was a shoemaker-repairer, so I've been taking good care of them, and they've only needed some light reshaping and tie changes aside from regular cleaning and hydration . But I've also run through more pairs of sneakers than I care to count in that same interval of time. And even tho I've stuck to the same brands, and wore them all until they fell appart; I've noticed they tend to last me 6 months at best now whereas, before a good pair would last me a couple of years. I don't mind using boot or shoes for everyday tasks, but I do need a lighter foam shoe for working; and so I end in those most of the time. The other type of shoe I use most are home slippers, and boy, do those suck now. I really wish they made all those other type of shoes with durability and repairability in mind, so I would not need to to replace them so often.

I thought most dressier shoes back in the 50s had leather soles and rubber was reserved for athletic shoes.

the last time i ever wore glued shoes was at my graduation, because (true story) the outsole of my right shoe literally fell off during the ceremony 😂 gosh the shame! i only wear stitched shoes from then on (including sneakers), and the pair i got to replace those unfortunate pair is now 5 years old, going through first resole last year

Hi Alf, I have a special pair of Flip Flops and I also have a new puppy who likes to chew. The Thong part of the flip flop has been attacked by this puppy and I am SO hoping you can repair them so that they last a little longer. These are one of my favorite pairs and Crocs company was bought out by another company and the quality has changed and I cannot get this particular style anymore. Can you please help with this? We mutated into a society where most goods are consumables, i.e. use and throw away or wait for something to break or fail. Like a clothes dreyer, the belt for the tumbler breaks and the dreyer is built so it is so labor intensive to replace the belt it is more economical to buy a new machine, whereas replacing the tumbler belt should without a doubt be an economically feasible option without taking it to a professional or manufacturer trained repairman. Goods made to be used and thrown away concept and totally widespread implementation in society to me is sickeningly wasteful and immoral for many reasons

Shoe repairs are becoming history of this Century.

Shoes today are cheap, both in price and quality. I found that the price of getting them repaired cost more than the shoe itself, which makes it more cost cost efficient to throw them away and buy a new pair. That’s a sad commentary about today.

This type of skill/workmanship most remain alive, buy shoes from the local/closest shoe maker instead of buying shoes from over seas, keep the jobs here.

I had a friend whose dad was a Sicilian cobbler. He put his 3 children through Catholic school: including a very prestigios high school in LA. Owned a small 3 bedroom house, supported his wife being a housewife. Mad props to them! My friebd was ashamed if her parents but I secretly admired them.

Reply to john son of Morris: NO! Just because it is new does not mean to say it is better. Often times the older generation models are of SUPERIOR QUALITY and built to last as long as they exists!

I will not buy a shoe that is not recraftable. I know that a good quality shoe can last 30 to 50 years and as long as it is a Goodyear welt and a there is a master shoe cobbler plus excelente maintenance good tanned leather and they will last. Ore then 50 years!

When I moved back home to NL, there were only 1 shoe repair shop in my area! Unfortunately a few years later the gentleman retired! I so miss getting my foot ware repaired. Now a days, people discard their foot ware and just go out and buy another pair; I think this is sad. I can’t imagine what our Ancestors would think of our wasteful behaviours today!! Wish we had craftsmen like you in my area today.

Yes every body did that we want quality we want to get them back then got shoe repaired but the Koreans who come here and do shoe repair pretend to know what they are doing but they do not, I have taken my boots in several times to three different people and none of them know how to replace a crepe sole or make sure the heals are replaced or straight they charge big bucks but nothing gets done so I wish we had reliable shoe repair here but all we have are pretenders

.....good video. Leather appears to he best,, that is to say the right leather. Vegans however shouldn't but for critical footwear they do insist on leather. There were some shoes that said genuine leather when it he substance was actually a composite shredded leather in vinyl. That leather was the doc Martin's material and easily developed crease cracks. Today we have to carefully inspect the soels of shoes cos the material self destructs and cracks and crumbles away on some makes even Nike and new balance .

Great video and history says this Vancouver Island boy. Throw away is the name of the game now but this big blue planet will tell us in a very short order that we can not and will not do this anymore. If you are religious you might say land fills are a sin to god.
