Old Stone Staircase Rebuild: Part 4! Building a Feature Rock Wall!

Well, here is the final video from this project! In this video, I rebuild a rock wall that I took apart while I was building the flagstone stairs. It was falling down and needed to be rebuilt anyways, so I was taking pieces of it here and there to use in the stairs. After, I took the rest of the wall down, created a nice solid base, and started building a new feature in the garden!

This is amazing! Are you putting mortar behind the rock as well as between? Are you also leveling vertically?

I put mortar behind and a little bit in between so it looks dry-stacked. I wasn't trying to level anything vertically, just trying to have a nice smooth upward slope, but still making it look natural. Thanks for watching!

This stone is from this property! In this area of Victoria this kind of stone is underground! Super local!😆

Great job! Do you ever back fill with gravel for drainage?

Yes, actually on this job, I used all the little pieces of stone that were left over after I built the wall, as backfill, and I also had a couple of buckets of clear crush gravel too. Thanks for watching!

No piping for drainage? I want to build a similar retaining wall to help prevent erosion infront if our house. Were built into a steep grade, and run off will erode the flat infront of the house and shift the house down hill. Without drainage pipe, and just washed stone and left over stone from shaping, how long do you estimate this will hold up? I don't want to be doing this all over again when I'm 70. 😂

@@justinmichael007 I would do it in some cases, but in this part of town, drainage is not an issue since underground is just rock and sand. But if it was a higher wall in a part of town that has more clay in the ground, I would put pipe drainage. I always think seeing a pipe at the bottom of the wall takes away from the look, so I only do it if it's absolutely necessary.

u use cement to hold the wall together?

No, actually all the stone I used was already there. The wall I built was replacing an old wall that was falling down. I used the old stone, and that old stone is actually from this property. This area that I was working is a small corner of this island that is on sandstone; so in this small area when you excavate for building a house, you find all this beautiful rock underground. It's the same stone that I used in my front garden! I've collected it from a few properties years ago and brought it home to use here. Thanks for watching!
